Holder: “A nation of cowards”

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 18, 2009 03:21 PM

AG Eric Holder says we’re a “nation of cowards” on race.

Attorney General Eric Holder described the United States Wednesday as a nation of cowards on matters of race, saying most Americans avoid discussing awkward racial issues.

In a speech to Justice Department employees marking Black History Month, Holder said the workplace is largely integrated but Americans still self-segregate on the weekends and in their private lives.

“Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and I believe continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,” said Holder, nation’s first black attorney general.

Race issues continue to be a topic of political discussion, Holder said, but “we, as average Americans, simply do not talk enough with each other about race.”

Funny. When I think of racial cowards, I think of Barack Obama at Jeremiah Wright’s church, sitting there week after week, year after year, saying nothing about the separatist demagoguery echoing from the pulpit to the pews.

When I think of racial cowards, I think of all the navel-gazers who fret about poisonous racial dialogue, but say nothing about “My President Is Black” bigotry.

When I think of racial cowards, I think of the people cowed by mau-mau-er Al Sharpton — now attacking the NYPost over a cartoon lampooning that crazy dead chimp.

When I think of racial cowards, I think of the folks who enable p.c. thugs to cry racism over “That One” and “Thug Thizzle” and “tricked out.”

Holder doesn’t want an honest dialogue about race. In the Age of Obama, “talking enough with each other about race” means the rest of us shutting up while being subjected to lectures about our insensitivity and insufficient integration on the weekends.

***

Touche, Allahpundit:

…there’s an irony even more sublime here: Obama himself did everything he could to avoid race during the campaign — aside from the occasional insinuation that McCain’s a bigot — until the Wright uproar forced his hand. He could have used his platform to push the issue front and center but he decided he’d rather get elected. Holder owes his job to that, ahem, cowardice.

Is this speculation on his part based on his own habits? Even assuming this is accurate, there’s an assumption that this “segregation” is race based and not culture (or interest) based.

People do things they are interested in doing, but those interests may not be shared by other cultures. Should they stop doing them because of that?

He might also be excluding a rather large and growing population of video gamers. There’s a whole generation of kids growing up playing games with people they’ve never seen and could care less about the color of their skin.

I’d love to have a frank debate on race.

Here’s my position: nobody of my age (born after 1980) is a slave, has ever been a slave, or has ever known somebody who has been a slave (in or to the USA). Stop acting like you are. I’ll grant your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents a different mindset because they lived through the changes. But you didn’t. So don’t act like you know the face of racism in 1920’s Mississippi. Because you don’t.

Life is rough for many people, and, despite what you might have heard, life is not magically easier for white people because they are white. Red lights do not magically turn green when my Jeep approaches. Books are sometimes not available (checked out) at the library – my “white privilege” doesnt work there. I still pay taxes and wait in lines at grocery stores and at Best Buy. Popcorn is overpriced at the cinema – I get no discount for being white.

PeopleJerks are jerks to me too. True, I can’t say that I’ve been called a certain derogatory n-word, but I have been the victim of mean names. That doesn’t make me a victim and that doesn’t entitle me to blame all my faults and failings on the color of the skin of my detractors.

Staying in school. Working hard. Playing by the rules. Speaking clearly and maturely/professionally (when necessary). Respecting women. None of these behaviors are hallmarks of “acting white.” No, these are the behaviors of well-adjusted members of society – and probably the offspring of good parents. (But I’ll grant that females are sooooooo annoying some days ~GOSH!)

You don’t owe me a thing. Likewise, I don’t owe you a thing.

    Dear Mr. Holder,

The funny thing about interjecting race into arguments…I usually find those that do so are trying to establish one of two things:

    1. Claim the higher moral ground of which they probably have to claim.
    2. Have no rational arguments, so they do this to appease the emotion-first crowd.

To claim that racism does not exist is naive. But racism takes many forms and should always be viewed from a distant and logical perspective. Many of those who cry racism are guilty of it themselves.

Remember that in this country, we still have the right to associate with whom we please. As in most human contact, we often choose people who are similar to ourselves. Now…I will type the following very slowly so you can follow along with the logic:

African-Americans often hang out with other African-Americans. Mexican-Americans socialize with other Mexican-Americans, and so forth. This is not racist…this is a natural response. The common denominator could be of shared culture, music, political viewpoints or whatever.

When you have cross-racial/nationality relationships, it is because the two (or more) parties found themselves to share a common ground and thus choose to be with each other. And many Americans have a variety of social groups, so some may tend to appear racially homogeneous, while others do not.

I have many social groups of all varieties and makeups. These groups run the gamut of race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Sometimes I have a big gathering in which all are invited. These gatherings are quite special since everyone tends to get along.

Furthermore, our behavior appears to be typical and I consider myself a typical American…oh yeah, a typical American with a “minority” heritage.

You, sir, are an ignorant, race-bating a**. You probably could not fit in to the most comfortable of gatherings such as we have. It is you that gives this country a bad name. Go away, you insignificant excuse for a human being.

Micheal Jackson doesn’t know what race Micheal Jackson is. Or sex. I am begining to suspect he may have been replaced with an alien from mars sometime in the 80’s

I’m reminded of an editorial I heard about back in the 80s in a newspaper in an African nation that was none too complimentary to Michael Jackson, because he canceled a concert in their country because he thought their country was not “clean enough” for him, or something like that.
I believe the gist of the editorial was more or less, “Who the hell does he think he is?”
What I do remember is that the editorial said he was, “Neither male nor female, niether black nor white….”

    Dead-on accurate – and hilarious!

Sorry, cannot give an evidentiary link to a document.
Couldn’t find that editorial mentioned on Google search.
I seem to rememeber that, at the time, M.J. gave his health as the official reason for not performing in that African country (nope, can’t remember which one).

However, I also experienced reverse discrimination many, many times at stores by black salespeople. I’ve been given dirty looks, ignored, and made to feel that as a white person I was to be treated with contempt. In addition, I also overheard many lunch-time conversations by black colleagues that shocked me with their racial slurs (on whites and Asians especially). After years of first-hand experience living and working in a very black city, I sadly have to say that the most racist people I have ever met are black people. So there, Mr. Holder.

But there’s a discussion about race I’d like to continue…boldly or cowardly, that is the discussion that must be held.

Blaming someone else for your problems? Cowardly.
