Holder: “A nation of cowards”

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 18, 2009 03:21 PM

AG Eric Holder says we’re a “nation of cowards” on race.

Attorney General Eric Holder described the United States Wednesday as a nation of cowards on matters of race, saying most Americans avoid discussing awkward racial issues.

In a speech to Justice Department employees marking Black History Month, Holder said the workplace is largely integrated but Americans still self-segregate on the weekends and in their private lives.

“Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and I believe continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,” said Holder, nation’s first black attorney general.

Race issues continue to be a topic of political discussion, Holder said, but “we, as average Americans, simply do not talk enough with each other about race.”

(link)

Funny. When I think of racial cowards, I think of Barack Obama at Jeremiah Wright’s church, sitting there week after week, year after year, saying nothing about the separatist demagoguery echoing from the pulpit to the pews.

When I think of racial cowards, I think of all the navel-gazers who fret about poisonous racial dialogue, but say nothing about “My President Is Black” bigotry.

When I think of racial cowards, I think of the people cowed by mau-mau-er Al Sharpton — now attacking the NYPost over a cartoon lampooning that crazy dead chimp.

When I think of racial cowards, I think of the folks who enable p.c. thugs to cry racism over “That One” and “Thug Thizzle” and “tricked out.”

Holder doesn’t want an honest dialogue about race. In the Age of Obama, “talking enough with each other about race” means the rest of us shutting up while being subjected to lectures about our insensitivity and insufficient integration on the weekends.

***

Touche, Allahpundit:

…there’s an irony even more sublime here: Obama himself did everything he could to avoid race during the campaign — aside from the occasional insinuation that McCain’s a bigot — until the Wright uproar forced his hand. He could have used his platform to push the issue front and center but he decided he’d rather get elected. Holder owes his job to that, ahem, cowardice.

But of course, since he is the first black president, that will make him too “big” to fail, and no one…no one will have the moral strength to do what is right, and hold him up to the standards by which you, me, and everyone else are judged.

Attorney General Eric Holder described the United States Wednesday as a nation of cowards on matters of race, saying most Americans avoid discussing awkward racial issues.

The only way we are “a nation of cowards on matters of race” is that we don’t hold black politicians to the same standard that we hold white politicians.

As far as the quote goes, he’s right. I work for ethnic reconciliation on nearly a daily basis (NOT based on color but based in humanity) and in general white people are scared to broach color issues BECAUSE of the activities of people like Al Sharpton, blacks keep hating whites (again I’m speaking not of ALL) because of the activities of people like Al Sharpton and the media which portrays few positives about blacks, and Europeans hate each other for all kinds of crazy reasons.

Like it or hate it it’s what I deal with constantly so if you don’t think it’s happening, you aren’t getting around.

So what does he want to do, force ethnic and racial groups to socialize in their free time? We have a racially blended extended family, so I don’t have a fear of speaking about race to others. In fact my family has winced when I open my mouth.

I can truthfully say without irony, “some of my best friends are black, Asian, Catholic, Swedish or Dutch.” This is America, and no one has the right to choose who we associate with in our private time.

I submit, however, that this is not the type of discussion on race that Mr. Holder nor right4life had in mind. I think you are closer to right4life here. In logic, at least, (as I wasn’t at the discussions) y’all’s discussion was primarily medical, and race or national origin is indeed a factor. You probably weren’t talking about alleged racial privileges and institutional preferences or whatever else Mr. Holder meant.

I’d be willing to bet it’s not a Bill Cosby solution, because every problem in the black culture, as we have been told for the last 150+ years, is because of the whites. Blacks don’t cause any of their own cultural problems. They feel that they don’t need to look within and they don’t need to assimilate into the American culture, as did the Europeans or the Asians or any others.

It seems plain to see on the surface that one main problem with the black culture is, with a few exceptions, the obstinate defiance to resist assimilation.

And because they’re continually being told that they are, and are treated as such by the political left, they feel a need to create an alternate culture of held-down victims deserving of entitlements.

Witness the saying, “My president is black”, and the rising to the surface in the black communities of such haters as Jeremiah Wright. Even held up by them as someone to admire.

In the American culture such haters are ostracized to the fringe.

This is what really concerns me about Holder. And the fact that he believes the 2nd amendment only applies to a military force and has nothing to do with individual rights.
I am not looking forward to seeing how he handles prosecutions having to do with so-called hate crimes and/or challenges to the 2nd amendment.

O.K. Eric, try this. American blacks are the most weatlthy, powerful, privileged black people on the earth. How did they get that way? American whites made them that way. We whites have agreed to live a lie so that you and yours can feel better. The lie is ‘affirmative action’, which is a set of separate, low standards which you cannot fail to meet. For our trouble, you whine, whine, whine. Every one of our cities has danger zones where no white person can safely set foot for the risk of being assaulted, raped, or murdered by your ilk. Apart from music and athletics your tribe has given civilization nothing but trouble. Is that honest enough? Oh, would you just shut up and count your blessings?

When will blacks like Mr. Holder start placing responsibility for the sorry state of many blacks in this nation where it belongs instead of blaming others?

Far too many blacks do not value education, they have children out of wedlock with no moral stigma attached, they are responsible for most of the crime even though they are less than one seventh of the population, and they have an entitlement mentality that expects others to give them things while they sit on their butts. I see this every day in Memphis, where blacks who are two-thirds of the population control every and all levels of government but still have a chip on their shoulders. There, how’s that for starting the discussion?

I would say also that the only reason Mr. Holder holds the position he does is because of the color of his skin, not the content of his character.

Great to see another Memphian here at MM.

One of the points that has been aluded to is the black as victim mentality and say it goes even further than that in that Victimhood is an idenity comparable to one’s self racial, gender or religious identification. Any attempts to get people to stop feeling that they are victims is naive at best, and idoicy at its worse. It pays too well and it appears that no one wants to get off the gravy train.

I currently average 4-5 racial slurs a day at work from patients and their families and not once have I or my fellow co-workers for a mental health agency ever responded in kind. Whats disenheartening is to see my black co-workers not stand up and denounce the slurs coming from black America while they make execuses for it. These were the same co-workers who made execuses for wright and rev. lowery.

However; I will continue to denounce racial slurs from all ethnic groups, even if they come from members of my own and do so consistently and fairly.

In Memphis, last week on the Ben Ferguson show (WREC 600) he mentioned that there are over 300 qualified non-black applicants waiting for jobs at the Memphis Police Department and that HRO is refusing to hire them because they are trying to put more black officers on the street. Just imagine for one moment what would happen if there were the same number of qualified black applicants and that HRO wanted a choculate-free PD—there would be a mass protest led by sharpton, and et al and most importantly there would be a civil rights investigation that would rivial what occured in the 60′s and 70′s.

A cartoonist equates the authors of the stimulus bill to an ape. A professional race mongerer imagines that the cartoonist is referring to the president, and whips up a statement of indignation. President Bush is openly called an ape, and there is only silence.

So there needs to be a discussion of race relations. Why? Sharpton’s doing a good enough job imagining racism where none exists. Carry on, sir. The hypocrisy is evident for any who care to see. There is simply no reason to have this discussion. Why would I hand you a club to beat me with for imagined transgressions?

I won’t go into the family members of other races bit, because I have some, it’s nothing to brag about, and it’s just not that unusual anymore. IMO, the attorney-general is an overly sensitive man with a chip on his shoulder about something. Doesn’t he think he earned his Ivy League education and his law degree? Does he think he got to be attorney general because of the color of his skin? That would be my problem, how?

Yes, life is unfair. I didn’t go to law school, or an Ivy League institution and used the GI Bill to pay for part of my college education. I wouldn’t trade places with Holder on a bet. I was a Marine. I’m a man. I graduated from college. I have a family. Being white is something that happened, it’s not something I did or earned, so it’s not important in my view of myself. I have no idea how Holder views himself.

The socializing I do is either with family or the folks from karate, who are also a racially mixed group, but I don’t view that as exceptional, or anything to talk about. Everybody earned their belts the same way. In fact, it’s sort of funny – people will say something like “Brown belt Chris” when they mean the Chris who happens to be black or “Black belt Chris” when they are talking about the other Chris, who happens to be white.
