More scenes from Mesa: “I need a beachfront condo, Mr. President!”

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 18, 2009 04:20 PM

I love this. At the Mesa AZ protest against President Obama, KFYI listeners brought signs telling Santa Obama what they wanted from the savior-based economy. Hats off to KFYI’s Bruce Jacobs and J.D. Hayworth. Reader Al Swanson sent these priceless pics.

Dude, where’s our bailout?

Amen, brother:

That was both funny and self aware.

“If you say my point is wrong, you ARE ATTACKING THIS CHILD!” and taking a kid to a probably safe and potentially educational political protest instead of hiring a baby-sitter.

I agree and have no issue with exposing children to political activity. But making signs for kids to hold, ascribing to them beliefs they could not possibly have formed, and marching them in front of crowds and cameras is exploiting them for your political purposes. Is it child abuse? No. But it is a bit unseemly.

Well, we’re certainly closer on this than we usually are.

One is saying “See this cute little face! You want this cute little face to die for lack of health care!!!” The other is saying “You see this cute little face! You want this cute little face to grow up in a socialist/fascist/whatever regime and steal all her freedoms!”

I disagree. Nobody is saying “You see this cute little face! You want this cute little face to grow up in a socialist/fascist/whatever regime and steal all her freedoms!”

As I stated, they were protesting alongside the adults.

They weren’t being put front and center the way the S-CHIP children were.

It’s the difference between the human relief organization which only highlights hungry children on their infomercials and the one which shows hungry people. One is most definitely exploiting the children (I’m not saying it’s bad – I’m simply defining exploitation) and the other is most definitely NOT exploiting the children (they are merely lumped in with the adults).

You need something short and catchy. Most of these are waaay too long. And remember — a little risk goes a long way. Be edgy, but not over the edge, you know? The Nazi comparison thing is clearly a non-starter, but how about “Obama Lied – Capitalism Died”? Or “Change We Can’t Believe In”? I think “Mr. President, Stimulate THIS!” really captures the outrage without any overt implications of violence, although it might be a little too suggestive for a G-rated event. Or how about something involving your favorite pork recipe?

Be creative! And remember — your only limitiation is your own imagination.

As to the kids holding the signs, how many of them are protesting ALL BY THEMSELVES? Without encouragement? As Bill O’Reilly has pointed out, even kids have rights too. Some kids are dragged to protests ON BOTH SIDES but how do you tell which ones are doing it willingly and which ones aren’t? That’s the tricky question.

These people are asking for luxuries. I don’t consider a home to sleep to be a luxury.

I disagree. A home is every bit a luxury which needs to be handled with serious financial responsibility. How many of the millions of people upside down in their house and close to foreclosure were seriously ready for the financial undertaking homeownership involves?

A home, like any overpriced thing such as an ivy-league (or any private college/university) education, is a luxury. Those who bought into homeownership as convenient ATM became homeowners for the wrong reasons. When you buy a home, you’re responsible for the property taxes and general upkeep of the property just like you’d be for a vehicle (in some states like VA).

Anybody can rent an apartment or house on the cheap. There are plenty out there that would have served as a home just as easily and without the financial pain their ignorance and irresponsibility is now causing the rest of us.

I know your presence on this blog is meant as an idiotic appeal to emotion but homeownership is a LUXURY. It takes hard work to be a homeowner and ready for that commitment. As we’re seeing now, those of us who rented and waited to own a home will have to bail out these reprobates.

If you can’t see that, you’re a sucker making excuses.

    Chapoutier,
I think we have more or less the same position.
It’s very, very difficult to point to a specific kid, especially if they appear to be eight or so or older, and say “That kid has not formed political opinions yet and is simply an appendage of the parent.” Some kids are just ahead of the game. Others look substantially younger than they are. The combo could have a very young-looking child actually be a legitimate demonstrator.
Also, I imagine if your kid gets all into the spirit of things and begs for a sign, it’s hard to say no, even if you’re pretty sure the kid doesn’t really understand. (A good reason to bring a toy, possibly.)
On the other hand, I feel certain some parents are shoving signs into their children’s hands, whether out of a sense of a good stage prop or genuinely looking at the child and seeing an adult that just happens to have the parent’s opinions down to a nuance, and “unseemly” is a good word for that.
It is in my opinion even worse when a teacher does it, maybe partly because the teacher is a government employee.

Actually, if you think I was making your point AGAIN you would be wrong. I was making a larger statement extrapolating on what you and other posters have said.

You’re doing an awful lot of assuming. I think that this is a matter of transparency not consistency. Exploiting kids to show others that we must feel guilty because Mummy and Daddy don’t make enough to get them healthcare is a bit over the top. Especially if those same parents (as well as many other negligent adults) either treat healthcare like it’s some kind of “right” (an outright emotional appeal) or too damn cheap to spend the money to put their kid(s) on their health insurance.

Have you ever taught? Are you qualified to identify which and what child may be mature enough to develop political opinions? I’ve seen some very mature 13 year olds who told me what they thought on a certain issue based on reasoned argument whereas some 16 year olds wouldn’t be able to say anything about their political beliefs unless it wasn’t tied to qualities such as “popularity” and he/she (the politician) makes “me” feel good.

So, I guess your larger point is that conservatives are hypocrites, right? That we (and our kids) must keep quiet when our rights are being taken away from us? Exactly what rights are being taken away from these S-CHIP propagandists? Oh my, the outrage, we HAVE to pay for our own healthcare and that of our children.

Yeah, I see your point. Using kids to pimp S-CHIP to pull the heartstrings of the taxpayer and the averice of the scumbag politicians vs. hard-working citizens who worry that everything they’ve worked for will be taken away from them to be given to deadbeats suckin’ on the Big Nanny Welfare Teat.

When will you take a stand, Mookie? I mean is S-CHIP a good idea? Was Stimapalooza a good idea? Kiddie shields aren’t the real issue, are they, Mookie?
