Omni-pork lives! Senate protects $7.7 billion worth of earmarks

President Obama can breathe a sigh of relief. The Senate just voted to keep all those earmarks that don’t exist in the $410 billion spending bill.

GOP Sen. John McCain’s amendment stripping the omni-pork package of an estimated 8,500 pet projects worth roughly $8 billion was defeated this afternoon. You can find a database of all those teeny, tiny pork projects here.

Here’s the roll call vote:

    It all depends on what the definition is this week. He might agree they’re pork, but deny the word earmarks.

    I guess this is the Obama plan for eliminating earmarks – declaring they don’t exist by suggesting the legislators move them to the core of the bill. So long as it’s an omnibus bill with no clear and unifying purpose (other than extending big government and spend, spend, spend), there’s no earmarks… they’re effectively all earmarks and none of them are distinctive as a “side” agreement.

    Harry Reid’s monorail is, after all, not a pet project but a matter of extreme importance to the entire country. /sarc

    He also noted the legislation includes 14 earmarks requested by lawmakers for projects sought by PMA Group, a lobbying company at the center of a federal corruption investigation.

    Did I miss something? Why are we going after DeMint? He’s been a rather vocal opponent of the spending, hasn’t he?

    Fox is reporting that the Omnibus bill is in a bit of trouble this morning. Dare we hope? I sure hope they leave in that Beaver management project though.
