Omni-pork lives! Senate protects $7.7 billion worth of earmarks

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 3, 2009 03:55 PM

President Obama can breathe a sigh of relief. The Senate just voted to keep all those earmarks that don’t exist in the $410 billion spending bill.

GOP Sen. John McCain’s amendment stripping the omni-pork package of an estimated 8,500 pet projects worth roughly $8 billion was defeated this afternoon. You can find a database of all those teeny, tiny pork projects here.

Here’s the roll call vote:

God save us from bipartisanship.

Allah’s got the vid of McCain on the Senate floor.

Via GOP Senate staffer Tom Jones, here’s the earmark pork map for the Commerce/Justice/State Omni-pork bill — and here’s the one for Energy and Water.

Wonder where all the porkulus money that’s already been approved is going? Tabitha Hale is watching.

It all depends on what the definition is this week. He might agree they’re pork, but deny the word earmarks.

I guess this is the Obama plan for eliminating earmarks – declaring they don’t exist by suggesting the legislators move them to the core of the bill. So long as it’s an omnibus bill with no clear and unifying purpose (other than extending big government and spend, spend, spend), there’s no earmarks… they’re effectively all earmarks and none of them are distinctive as a “side” agreement.

Harry Reid’s monorail is, after all, not a pet project but a matter of extreme importance to the entire country. /sarc

He also noted the legislation includes 14 earmarks requested by lawmakers for projects sought by PMA Group, a lobbying company at the center of a federal corruption investigation.

    Unreal

Did I miss something? Why are we going after DeMint? He’s been a rather vocal opponent of the spending, hasn’t he?

No amount of rationalization can rehabilitate their votes on these measures. We cannot afford to have Democrats in power, nor, obviously can we afford these “pretend conservatives” who support them. VOTE THEM OUT!!! And if Michael Steele is unable to show some mettle, he’s welcome to go away as well.

No news here. Just typical empty posturing by McCain when he has no chance of succeeding. Where was his “gang of 14″? Oh yeah, they only assemble when Democrats need help on their issues.

Once again, McCain FAILS when leading the charge for conservatism. Perfect record intact.

Needless to say we have been poorly served by the so called conservatives (RINOs) in the Senate this year. Ya know, the more I think about it, I think the $650,000 for Beaver Management might actually be a good project. If the government learns to manage beavers then there is hope for management of the American people when we all go under water!

Fox is reporting that the Omnibus bill is in a bit of trouble this morning. Dare we hope? I sure hope they leave in that Beaver management project though.
