Priceless: Tax cheat Treasury Secretary to chase after…tax cheats

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 3, 2009 02:15 PM

Trying. To. Type. Between. Snorts.

Sides. Splitting.

Fresh from the AP wire:

President Barack Obama’s Treasury secretary says the administration will unveil a series of rules and measures in the coming months to limit the ability of international companies to avoid U.S. taxes.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday that Obama will propose legislation to limit U.S. companies’ ability to shelter foreign earnings from taxation in the U.S. He also said the administration will try to limit wealthy Americans’ ability to use tax havens to avoid taxation.

He did not immediately provide details.

No, of course not. “Immediately providing details” is not something Obama Cabinet members do.

Silly.

Well, if they weren’t taxed up the wazoo, there would be no need to “hide” money in Switzerland in the first place.

Which is it? International companies or U.S. companies?

Some corporate inversions are tax driven. Some reflect the changing economy and face of many Fortune 500-esque companies.

One can only speculate what this means now since Geithner never has any details, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were dusting off their attacks on corporate inversions (with no consideration for the fact that they helped drive many of those companies to that solution).

Read this… it will illustrate what a business would do when a particular country raises it’s taxes. Then consider WHO you are reading about here.

    From UPI

DUBLIN, Ireland, Feb. 27 (UPI) — Rocker Bono has denied he is a hypocrite for moving part of his band U2′s business to the Netherlands to avoid paying higher taxes in Ireland.

The Times of London said Oxfam, Concern and several Catholic missionary orders claim U2 has deprived its homeland of revenue for social services and overseas aid by taking its financial affairs to Holland where the tax rate on royalty earnings is lower than it is in Ireland.

“There is nothing illegal about what they have done in taking advantage of more favorable tax laws but, given Bono has invested so much in promoting an end to poverty, we see a contradiction there,” Nessa Ni Chasaide, of the Debt and Development Commission, told the newspaper.

“We pay millions and millions of dollars in tax. The thing that stung us was the accusation of hypocrisy for my work as an activist,” U2 front man Bono countered in an interview with the Irish Times.

“Everybody in Ireland knows that there are some very clever people in the government and in the revenue who created a financial architecture that prospered the entire nation,” the singer said. “It was a way of attracting people to this country who wouldn’t normally do business here and the financial services
brought billions of dollars every year directly to the Exchequer. What’s actually hypocritical is the idea that then you don’t use a financial services center in Holland. The real question people need to ask about Ireland’s tax policy is, ‘Was the nation a net gain benefactor?’ and, of course, it was — hugely so. So, there was no hypocrisy for me.”

    Back on-topic:
It’s a shame that liberals only seem to listen to Bono when he’s talking about AIDS in Africa. Encouraging businesses to come here with tax incentives would increase jobs and the economy. Instead, this administration views them as the enemy and vilified corporate leaders.

The spokesman continued, “Further, should he be caught in the act again, he is allowed to apologize if anyone’s feelings were hurt and get another big pay raise, not prison time. Oh yeah, and he doesn’t have to pay taxes on that raise either!”

Yeah, they’re doing that by destroying the economy so that there won’t BE any wealthy people.

Oh but you see, this is all in the name of “fairness” and “equality”. Income redistribution to the poor and non-working losers, because they’re entitled to your wealth!

Let’s all hope Turbo Tax Tim is successful in bringing in new revenue. God knows ACORN needs the money.

Because you’re not a member of The B.O.’s cabinet and will spend time making license plates if you don’t.

He also said the administration will try to limit wealthy Americans’ ability to use tax havens to avoid taxation.

Geithner is a retard. As are all socialists. Regardless of how high the top rate goes in the U.S., the income tax will not yield revenues amounting to more than 9 to 11 percent of personal income. Taxpayers always find ways to avoid punitive rates: Talent migrates. Accountants become artists. Havens teem. Capital. Ships. Off. Shore.

When the personal income tax rate increased in 1991 and 1995, income tax revenues actually dropped to 8.8 percent of personal income, less than the 10 percent collected in the late 1980s when the top rate was at its lowest: 28 percent.

The knuckle-dragging socialists that The B.O. has surrounded himself with are completely devoid of reality.

Hey, B.O.! Pass the FairTax, you socialist clod! That will solve your enforcement problems instantly.

Geithner’s transformation into another That’s So FO, Man is complete. (Though it seems it was not much of a stretch.)

Key takeaway quote from today’s hearing: ‘This budget is the most responsible ever.’

I do not trust this man, and will never more expect him to be honest, correct or competent.

I do expect him to become a complete calamity.

Buy lightbulbs. They will hold their value as this government makes them scarce. Lighter than gold. Useful. Cheap.

To clarify, Geithner did not cheat on his income taxes, he cheated on his self-employment taxes. Accordingly, the most appropriate occasion for mockery would be him being called upon to fix Social Security.

The AP spin was completely wrong! Unfortunately, Geithner did NOT say he was going after tax “dodgers”. I wish he was going after tax dodgers–that’s part of his job (though hypocritical)!!!

Geithner said the administration wants to change the rules to make more income taxable. He should try enforcing the rules on the books already and going after the actual tax cheats before trying to take more from the law-abiding folks.

Geithner certainly deserves mocking, but let’s not tar the innocent along with him. Unfortunately AP’s headline and Michelle’s headline here unfairly imply that the companies and individuals targeted by the administration’s proposed (but not yet identified) tax law changes are tax cheats. They are not. If they were, Obama wouldn’t have to introduce new legislation to tax them.

    Dear Mr. Tax Cheat Secretary:

Think about this idea. If you went across the hall and investigated all the tax cheaters in Congress instead of jetting off to try to find International tax cheaters you could further O’s “Green” agenda and also explain the green on your face. You’d probably find more revenue too.

The man didn’t say he was going after “International tax cheaters”! He said he wanted to change the rules (as usual the “change” was not defined) to make more international revenues taxable in the US.

As patriotic Americans we should encourage the idiot to go after all significant “tax cheaters”. It would make him a hypocrite, but it is his job to enforce the tax laws. He should not have the job in the first place, but he should at least try to do it since we are paying him.
