President Barack Obama’s Treasury secretary says the administration will unveil a series of rules and measures in the coming months to limit the ability of international companies to avoid U.S. taxes.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday that Obama will propose legislation to limit U.S. companies’ ability to shelter foreign earnings from taxation in the U.S. He also said the administration will try to limit wealthy Americans’ ability to use tax havens to avoid taxation.
He did not immediately provide details.
No, of course not. “Immediately providing details” is not something Obama Cabinet members do.

I would expect nothing less from an organization (IRS) that cannot read a profit/loss sheet but can bill you in error and then take your money.

President Obama likes the idea of globalization of government, but apparently not the globalization of business.
Taxation has consequences.
Which is it? International companies or U.S. companies?
Some corporate inversions are tax driven. Some reflect the changing economy and face of many Fortune 500-esque companies.
One can only speculate what this means now since Geithner never has any details, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were dusting off their attacks on corporate inversions (with no consideration for the fact that they helped drive many of those companies to that solution).
The first place Geither could start (outside his own house) would be to get a list of all Democrat politicians in Washington. After five or ten years of this, he could move on to the OTHER tax cheats.
John Galt told me he is now accepting those in leadership of our great businesses and enterprises for his location hidden in the Rockies. I understand he will accept all people who make over 250, 000 as well. Oh and he asked me to say something to liberals, RINOs and all other thieves of the entrepreneur and hard working class…. Geithner as SOTT reminds me of FDR putting old man Kennedy in charge of Wall Street over site in the 30’s…who better to catch the fox in the hen house than a fox. For libs, the Kennedy patriarch was a crook by the way…not just in booze, made a fortune swindling in the stock markets.
It isn’t tax revenue they are looking for – it’s punishment. If they wanted more revenue, they would do what has worked every other time – cut the corporate and capital gains taxes.
So, the Obama administration want to limit corporate compensation, take companies to task for entertaining their high achievers and their use of corporate jets, tax said companies up the wazoo, and now chase after their tax shelters. In the meantime he is presiding over a large transfer of the wealth he imagines these miscreants are going to produce for him, to the public sector. Look for very low growth for the next few years, no one in their right mind would be investing their money or their blood sweat and tears in this punitive climate. I predict the DOW dropping or stagnant for a good while.
Yes siree Bob…I mean Obama… let’s make the US MORE unfriendly to international business so the trade deficit will grow like the budget deficit.

Geithner should contract the “Justice Brothers.” They are experts at sniffing our large amounts of dollars and then shaking the owner down.

Geithner cheated on his taxes the same way Palin did. He “interpreted” the rules in a way that gave him a windfall. Like Palin, he paid up when the IRS called him on it.

Wrong again. Geithner actually lied. Palin did not.
Geithner took money from his employer that he was explicitly told was to be used for tax purposes and … didn’t use it to pay taxes he was required to pay. Palin relied on an existing interpretation of tax law that was changed when it became an avenue of attack against her.
LGM, you really need to read facts for a change. Geithner was reimbursed for his taxes due. He simply took the money and ran. Knowing full well that money was to be used to pay his INCOME taxes. Someone in that position should know better.
Obama has to get the money for his BBQ from somewhere!

It’s a shame that liberals only seem to listen to Bono when he’s talking about AIDS in Africa. Encouraging businesses to come here with tax incentives would increase jobs and the economy. Instead, this administration views them as the enemy and vilified corporate leaders.

lgm…EVERY last expatriate I know – and having been based overseas a couple of times, I know lots – EVERY last one KNEW what TAX EQUALIZATION payments were for. I dare you to show me in the tax code even remotely where you think TAX EQUALIZATION payments could be not used for taxes. The firms I worked for, made the payments throughout the year (to me), I paid my taxes (both USA and host country), and at the end of the year, I had to submit to my firm an accounting. If you believe Geithner made an honest mistake, you clearly in denial.
So, the Depraved/Deranged Leprechaun is going after ‘tax cheats’, hmmmmmmm? Betcha if any surnames such as Kennedy, Reid, Pelosi, et al show up, they’re labelled “exempt” ……………

Even if it were a mistake, how would this not disqualify him from being treasury secretary? Granted I don’t expect that he would know the entire tax code, but you might think that being able to manage his own tax profile might be an indicator of his (in)ability to advise on a macro-economic level. What happened to wanting really smart people in this administration. He’s certainly not raising the bar on that expectation.
Or do we now just see this as a case of the cobbler’s son not having any shoes?
This is the man that goes in front of the press without any details on anything in what now appears to be a pattern and liberals are surprised.

Geithner is a retard. As are all socialists. Regardless of how high the top rate goes in the U.S., the income tax will not yield revenues amounting to more than 9 to 11 percent of personal income. Taxpayers always find ways to avoid punitive rates: Talent migrates. Accountants become artists. Havens teem. Capital. Ships. Off. Shore.
When the personal income tax rate increased in 1991 and 1995, income tax revenues actually dropped to 8.8 percent of personal income, less than the 10 percent collected in the late 1980s when the top rate was at its lowest: 28 percent.
The knuckle-dragging socialists that The B.O. has surrounded himself with are completely devoid of reality.

To clarify, Geithner did not cheat on his income taxes, he cheated on his self-employment taxes. Accordingly, the most appropriate occasion for mockery would be him being called upon to fix Social Security.

The AP spin was completely wrong! Unfortunately, Geithner did NOT say he was going after tax “dodgers”. I wish he was going after tax dodgers–that’s part of his job (though hypocritical)!!!
Geithner said the administration wants to change the rules to make more income taxable. He should try enforcing the rules on the books already and going after the actual tax cheats before trying to take more from the law-abiding folks.
PS – The law-abiding folks who are simply (and legally) trying to AVOID taxes.

Geithner certainly deserves mocking, but let’s not tar the innocent along with him. Unfortunately AP’s headline and Michelle’s headline here unfairly imply that the companies and individuals targeted by the administration’s proposed (but not yet identified) tax law changes are tax cheats. They are not. If they were, Obama wouldn’t have to introduce new legislation to tax them.
I feel for you. I hate moving.
