Correction/update: Coburn anti-earmark vote now; competitive bidding amendment fails, 38-57; earmark ban fails 43-52
Scroll for updates…
Correction/update. The Coburn amendment that failed 38-57 earlier this afternoon was the competitive bidding amendment. Roll call vote here.
5:37pm Eastern. GOP Sen. Tom Coburn trying to strip 11 stinky earmarks from the omni-pork bill this afternoon. Anticipating it will go down as well.
So, Sen. Carl Levin gets his $3.8 million for Tiger Stadium.
And Sen. Tom Harkin gets his $1.8 million swine and manure odor treatment funding. From a Hill source, here’s a bit of the exchange between Harkin and Coburn:
HARKIN: “So I suppose we’ll hear a lot of jokes on David Letterman and Jay Leno and a lot of other people will be making jokes about this money for manure. But keep in mind this is not wasteful, or unnecessary, or frivolous. This is very important in the daily lives in the people of my state, in North Carolina and every other place where we raise swine.”
COBURN: “We slaughter 10,000 hogs a day in one plant in Oklahoma. I know exactly what it smells like. I’ve traveled every farm area in the country and my state. I know what farm odors are like. As a matter of fact, to me, a lot of it smells pretty good compared to what you smell in the cities, but the fact is, is it a priority that we spend that money now?”
A commenter below requested an “OINK if you love Barack” sticker. Reader Matt serves one up:

From Coburn’s page, a breakdown of the earmarks he wanted stripped:
Coburn amendment #610 would save $16,435,000 by striking the following earmarks:
• $1,900,000 earmark for the Pleasure Beach Water Taxi Service in Connecticut;
• $3,800,000 earmark to preserve the remnants of Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy in Michigan;
• $238,000 earmark for the Polynesian Voyaging Society of Honolulu, Hawaii, which organizes sea voyages in ancient-style sailing canoes;
• $380,000 earmark for restoration and preservation of Maine’s historic lighthouses for the American Lighthouse Foundation in Rockland, Maine;
• $300,000 earmark to commemorate the 150th anniversary of John Brown’s raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry National Historic Park in West Virginia;
• $1,791,000 earmark for swine odor and manure management research in Ames, Iowa;
• $200,000 earmark for tattoo removal in Mission Hills, California;
• $1,500,000 earmark for the California National Historic Trail, Interpretive Center and Nevada Ampitheater
• $5,471,000 earmark for the Harkin grant program for Iowa
• $380,000 earmark for construction of recreation and fairgrounds in Kotzebue, Alaska;
• $475,000 earmark for improvements to Orange County Great Park in California.

Update: Here’s the roll call vote on the earmark ban. Failed 43-52.
Republicans voting against the Coburn amendment and with the Dems?

Is this a deal with Reid to keep tourists out of the Capital?
Levin thinks that a part of Tiger Stadium will act as a magnet to bring tourists to the Corktown area of downtown Detroit? WTF, the city council just told “whitey” to leave at the city council meeting the other day. Doesn’t sound welcoming to visitors to downtown Detroit to me. Only two reasons left to visit Detroit…Red Wing Hockey and the Art Institute.
it’s like the democrats don’t care how much money they are spending and well, it is their money. Okay, some earmarks were Republican ones–but it ain’t the republicans are suddenly power crazed. There’s blood in the water (money up for grabs) and there is a feeding frenzy.
that would be it isn’t their money
That photoshop of “OINK” just made my stomach do a flip.
(Please note my name.)
You were right the first time, they think it is their money and you better be glad they allow you to keep any of it without first sending it to them to dole out as they see fit.
I think the GOP members with earmarks in the bill should have lined up one by one and said “I wish to remove my earmark from the bill.” Maybe only a symbolic move, but it would have said LOTS.
Of course we knew it would fail. Dontcha ya know: earmarks save lives and jobs. We’ve gotta put human pig odor detectors to work somehow.
Is it just me or have humans as a species just gotten dumber over the years? Now we just make excuses for wasting money in the name of “odor” and “putting people to work” even if it isn’t true.
Speaking of my money…
http://www.youtube.com/user/McMorrisRodgers
Congresswoman McMorris-Rogers wants to know if “we” should nationalize “our” 401k plans.
Love the Oink logo.
They should use it on Congress. But, I don’t think it will help. Everything they do will still stink.
Out here in the southwest if you have a couple of acres and a horse you are a rancher. If you have a million acres and a bunch of pigs you are nothing but a pig farmer. We have a whole bunch of pig farmers in Washington DC.
A government program to stop Sh!t stinking. Only in America.
If you want to see the economy completly collapse, pass a bill allowing this, you will see the largest run on financial institutions ever.
Keep your damn hands off of my money, it is my choice to invest it in a 401k in hopes of a bigger return. I accept that risk. If there are people that don’t that is their choice.
This plan will end up getting people killed.
That would be my 101k…
What did pig farms do before this congress – forbid stench?
OINK!
LOL! Classic!
The Dems think theirs doesn’t. They just want to know how to extend that to pigs.
Dingy Harry didn’t like the smell of us in the hallowed halls of congress…so why doesn’t he include an earmark for studying how to make all of us not smell so bad?
Any Demonrats vote for responsibility? Did the Treason Trio stab us in the back again?
Not that it matters, in a way. I forget which vote it was, maybe on the amendment to stop Obama’s plan to use our tax money to kill foreign babies, Arlen Specter voted for baby killing, but once it became obvious the amendment would die without his vote, switched it for the roll call.
The Treason Trio can pretend to be Republicans when the votes don’t matter.
Just like the Demonrat whips in both chambers will let certain supposedly ‘moderate’ Demonrats vote against Obama as the 2010 elections approach when they are sure their votes won’t be needed.
While feedlots and hog farms can downright make your eyes water and your nose run, they smell like roses next to the stink of our money being burned in Congress. “Swine and Manure Odor Abatement?” How stupid is this?
ECS
“Oink! if you love barack”? No, no, no, NO! You’re getting it all wrong. It should be either ONLY “Oink!” with the Obama ‘logo’ on it. It is a badge of PROTEST…
Of course I wouldn’t mind it saying “Oink! Something smells in Washington”
The point is to create a POWERFUL message which registers our absolute DISGUST with Obama and his liberal enablers in Congress! Any liberal who views it should IMMEDIATELY know we loath the Messianic Marxist immediately.
BTW-I don’t want to hear another word about a Tea Party until someone tells me exactly how we can ALL stop paying our taxes at once. What would happen if 48% of the nation’s income tax returns simply didn’t show up. If everyone changed their withholdings to “$0″ for the entire year of 2009?
I don’t want a PROTEST, I want civil freakin’ unrest… I’ll agree that the gov’t was awarded the right to levy taxes for the PURPOSE OF GOVERNING, and for the SECURITY of this UNION, but I’ll debate anyone that this means they have the RIGHT to GIVE THAT MONEY AWAY! Some Constitutional scholar please prove me wrong! Where does it say in the Constitution that the Federal Government has the right to GIVE THAT TAX MONEY AWAY? That’s not “spending”. Anyone?
Hmm. Good idea! I’ll put together a research grant proposal. $1.5 million should do it. Hey, might as well join the other oinkers at the trough!

The crash is coming … the bonfire of the dollars is getting to high.
It’s not just you, emjem.
Why is this so hard?
If the expenditure is personal, pay for it personally.
If local, pay locally.
If national, pay nationally.
Budget lines for specific local projects are an invitation for corruption. And a main stream media that was doing its job could have a great time investigating the ties between the gifts and the line items.
On a side note, I was walking down the National Mall today and there was a distinct odor of pig $hit. I know most of the Dems would blame it on the snowstorm this week, but I would counter that it’s because DC has become the largest pig farm in the country.
I’m looking forward to those who decry pork, to release their pork earmarks.
Moreover, what a great demonstration to prove the sincerity of their position, for Republican members of the Congress to not only vote against the omnibus bill but to pull their earmarks from that omnibus bill.
It is quite simple, will Republicans follow the theme set forth by Rush Limbaugh, Bobby Jindal and Sen McCain, or will they follow the Democrats and Pres Obama?
Otherwise, they are hypocrites.
I’d love to put that bumper sticker on my car but I’m pretty sure that it would be vandalized. (I live in the bluest section of an insanely blue city.)
The smell of pig manure takes me back to the days at gruesome Grissom AFB IN before it was turned over to the reserves thanks to BRAC (Base Realignment And Closure). With the wind in the right direction you would walk outside and the smell would initially almost knock you over, but eventually you got used to it. The smell coming out of the halls of government reeks so badly I doubt many of us will ever get used to it.
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒE (mo-lone lah-veh) Translation: Come and take them!
Many moons ago I was a farm field underwriter for an insurance company. I’d inspect hog operations. The smell would stay with you even when you got home 10 hours later, then you’d take a shower and the stench would reactivate and drop you to your knees. Now, when I walk by a left wing nutbag or liberal apologist… the stench returns , even after 20 years. Being presently unemployed for awhile, i don’t take unemployment benefits on principle, but the shame I feel towards our Congress is painful above and beyond my situation.
Sorry, emjem. Just to clarify for anyone who gives a crap: I wasn’t trying to insult emjem earlier. I agreed with the sentiment, but my hoof-in-mouth syndrome struck again. I’m retreating to the underside of my bridge now. I may emerge again when I have something truly thoughtful to add to a conversation.
Too bad this won’t remove the stink from this swine-filled bill!
NEW: Arlen Specter votes for earmarks related to corrupt lobbying firm
Then let THEM pay for it!!!!!
At least your honest about the fact that the Democrats and Obama are the pork leaders.
I thought the surgeon general warned us years ago that bacon was really bad for your health…must have been a bunch of BS, cause it’s the only thing on the menu in DC and I don’t see those gluttons dropping off like flies.
In other words…how to put pig farmers out of business and on to the government teet.
Well, I mean… come on! Wouldn’t something like this for democrats be considered nepotism?
I see Kay Bailey Hutchison voted against the competitive bid amendment. I look forward to voting that RINO out.
How much does it cost to attach a vacuum cleaner hose to every pigs anus? Im pretty sure the hose is reusable after the slaughter.
Random thought: Why is Pepe LaPew the outcast but Porky Pig never has to go to the bathroom? And for that matter why is he called Porky? Thats racist.
Just circling back to this one since our lawmakers had the audacity to hope to defend their waste of our money.
On the tattoo removal earmark..
Here’s a thought. Wear a friggin’ shirt or get the tattoo removed on your own dime.
