Your tax dollars at work: Bike paths & beautification (plus more logo-mania!)

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 4, 2009 12:04 PM

Have you checked Recovery.gov lately? No need to ask Joe Biden for the, uh, website number. Here’s the link to a chart currently featured on the front page.

It informs you that $799 million of the porkulus money will be spent on “mandatory transportation enhancements.” The website explains: “‘Enhancement’ is a legally defined term for projects such as sidewalk repairs, bicycle paths, and beautification projects. Enhancements do not involve vehicle or mass transit related items.”

Yup, bike paths and beautification. Your federal tax dollars at work.

Yesterday’s porkulus logo Photoshop contest has yielded a bumper crop of new entries. I always say mockery is the best medicine! Thanks for all the submissions.

So is The Sheriff going after all the congressmen and senators that voted for this crap? Actually they’re misusing taxpayer money just by getting out of bed in the morning.

By answering to him, he means you’ll have to explain why you got caught.

Although spending federal dollars for bike paths may seem frivolous, there are many of us who pay taxes and use bike paths for commuting and, especially, for recreation. As a recreational rider, I am glad to see that some of the funds to be spent on transportation related projects will be going to something that I can use, rather than to subsidizing inefficient, overly expensive mass transit systems. I am basically opposed to the stimulus package, but, since the money is going to be spent, am happy to see that some of it might be of use to me.

Look, if the government is going to build a bike path, at least do it right. A classic example of how to do it is in my neighborhood. The median of a busy boulevard has both a bicycle path and a pedestrian path. Almost no one walks on the latter because the surface is simply rocky dirt. Walk on it dry, and your shoes just pick up pebbles and dirt. If it’s wet (raining right now) it’s unwalkable. So, everyone walks on the bike path. At least it’s asphault, but also has loose rocks all over it. There is of course, the danger that cyclists may hit pedestrians. Actually, it’s probably worse for cyclists. It is constantly interrupted by intersections and is not straight. Incredibly, billboard posts are right in the path and there is no lighting or warning before a cyclist comes upon them.

I don’t know how to…and, I don’t think I can here at my office computer, anyway.
But, wouldn’t a photoshop of Slow Joe’s head on Barney Fife as Barney is reaching into his pocket for his one bullet be worth a yuk or two?

What the funk. Seriously, the last thing we need are bike paths. We need better solutions for the problems we’re facing these days, and we don’t need money we don’t have thrown at the problem.

Case in point: I’ve come up with an extremely cheap light rail solution for three densely-populated areas in Northern New Jersey (Essex and Hudson primarily, but also a small part of Passaic). It involves expanding the Newark City Subway over existing and abandoned freight rail lines, and not a single new track has to be laid to get this up and running. The most that would have to happen is some new electrical wire would need to be run along some portions of the run. Current cars that are in use on both Newark’s subway line and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (which this would connect to as well) could be used, which means that fewer new cars would need to be purchased to make this a reality. In addition to expanding the ability of commuters to get back and forth without cars, reducing traffic jams which are frequent in the areas surrounding Newark and most of Hudson County, and shortening the average commute by a sizable margin in some cases, the economy around these new light rail-serviced areas would be grown almost immediately, with commuters flocking to a cheaper, quicker option and construction crews working to upgrade the areas surrounding the rail lines.

See the plan at http://expandncs.blogspot.com and let me know what you think.

Oh, and btw: I want this financed via local/private investment, and I refuse to participate in any project that attempts to use any of this bailout nonsense.

I get peeved at these elitists who thing we all need to use mass transit and live in eco-friendly urban collectives.

    Where’s choice now!?!?!?

Besides how would mass transit and bicycle-only transit help people in a farming community of 3,000? Huh!?!?

These goons need to live in the real world and visit flyover country sometime. I guess they just want to move everybody but the farmers and ranchers to the cities. It takes local infrastructure to support agriculture. Farmers need farming communities. (To put it in terms Biden can understand, you need a feed store, a large animal veternarian, a hardware store, a Dairy Queen (essential), and a ton of other businessesto make it work.
