Town: Um, we don’t need porkulus money for homeless

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 5, 2009 09:45 AM

Gee, how many times do you think this scenario is being played out across the country:

The Town of Union is getting $578,661 in federal Recovery Act funding for a homeless problem that may not exist within its borders.

The money is coming from the federal Housing and Urban Development program to pay for homeless prevention and emergency shelter programs.

Union did not request the money and does not currently have homeless programs in place in the town to administer such funds, said town Supervisor John Bernardo.

“We were surprised,” Bernardo said. “We’ve never been a recipient before.”

Bernardo said he isn’t aware of any homeless issue in the largely suburban town.

I’m sure Joe Biden, a.k.a. Bozo the VP, will get to the bottom of this and report back on that website thingy. What’s the website number again, Joe?

For now, Bernardo said he and other town officials are looking into why the town got the homeless prevention money and how – and even if – the money can be used by the town.

Glantz said the money can be used for people who may be in danger of losing their jobs and their residences.

“We hope and encourage these new grantees to develop creative strategies for the funding,” Glantz said of Union’s homeless grant.

“Creative” = Do whatever the hell you want with the money. Who wants an iPhone? Yippee!

So, you can use the money ahead of time if you think you’re gonna lose your job? What a country! I’ll have me some o’ dat! I feel a cutback comin’ on at my work—can I have a new car to go look for another job? Make it a Maserati…

Let’s see, people who buy more house than they can afford get money, corporations that keep loosing money get money, and the homeless get money.

I think I am going to become a corporate executive in a failing company that has lost my home due to more bad decions and is now going to live in a cardboard box. Wow it looks like I just won the lottery.

Of course, if I want to qualify for these “wonder rates” according to my bank, I need to stop payment for six months and destroy my sterling credit.

    And go against my principles.

    And lose my dignity.

    And quit working.

    Hmmm….decisions, decisions.

My hope is that the Town, and every other municipality, county and State that doesn’t want, or can’t, use the stim money will return it.

In fact let the money sit in an account that we can see online. Let it sit there for as long as it takes until VP Biden says, “pull it back.”

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you have to. Said another way, just because you have money does not mean you have to spend it.

Watch for the proud, ‘major’ announcement that $578,661 in federal funding has been identified as ‘wasteful’ by that frugal watchdog President Obama.

    Only about

My hometown, a speck along on a map, also received money for “the homeless”. Nobody in town is homeless! In the absence of instructions, the town put the money into a CD until it is recalled.

Doesn’t anyone in the government bother checking with the local governments before these funds are released? Or would that be too inconvenient for the shovel out of the treasury door?

Well, I think they should be grateful that this administration is looking ahead. We are told almost daily that 9 MILLION people will be homeless because of the foreclosure crises.

I live in Vegas, one of the hardest hit and one can hardly move about town due to the number of people living on the street.
    It’s become a real problem.

Not surprised. I would live to know what the percentage is for illegal aliens who have defaulted. Look at the states that show the largest default rates. CA, NV, TX, FL can’t remeber the 5th…what do they all have in common?

Programs for the homeless are a huge scam. Here in Denver, we just paid $10 MILLION to build apartments for people who will pay no rent, given away phones that are sold for booze money, and phone cards which are also sold for booze money. The Philidelphia Plan, which is touted as a success, spent $100,000 per year per person to “keep someone from being homeless”. Not only is it a waste of money, all it does is shuffle the people of to drink themselves to death.

Vegas just recently had a census to count the homeless. When the figures were much lower than projected, rather than be glad, the bleeding hearts claimed that the figures they projected were actually right but the homeless were hiding from them.
