Lamest billboard ever

(Thanks to Don Surber for sending photo)

I said last week that Democrat donors ought to question whether the DNC was using its money wisely by indugling in an anti-Rush Limbaugh billboard.

See, I told you so. The Christian Science Monitor skewers the results:

New Limbaugh billboard slogan announced – creativity was not considered

Setting a world record today for beating a dead horse, the Democratic National Committee will announce they’ve selected an anti-Rush Limbaugh slogan to be placed on a billboard in the radio host’s hometown.

The DNC began soliciting slogans a week ago in response to Limbaugh’s well-known statement that he wants President Obama to fail.

“If you’re anything like me, then you’ve had the urge to talk back to a right-wing talk radio host more than a few times. Now you can,” reads an email blast from the executive director of the DNC. “Can you help us come up with a message for Rush that we’ll place on a billboard right in his hometown?”

The envelope please

That message has apparently been decided. CNN is reporting that the billboard will say, “Americans didn’t vote for a Rush to failure.”

Apparently, more than 80,000 slogans were emailed in and astonishingly all were somehow deemed worse than that one.

FAIL.

Yes, Rush’s numbers are going up, up, up! Their ad dept. says they are way ahead of last year in $. The Dems talked about how Rush fired the first shot by wanting the new Pres’s policies to fail but the president fired the first shot by calling out Rush’s listeners. He inferred we were mind-numbed robots. I’m thinking he was jealous. Rush fired back. He loves free speech and loves to shock. He says things that, while I might not always agree, I admire him for opening up the debate. Frankly, this billboard is great! Great free advertising for Rush and a great play on words. I’ll go out on a limb and say it was probably written by a Rush fan because it’s just too easy to read it as an indictment of this administration.

Even in your most fevered imaginings where Rush is the epitome of all that is evil, you’ll never see 100% rejection of his ideas.

This is a losing proposition for Democrats. As you have already stated, the people that already listen to Rush will continue to do so. Those that disliked Rush, will continue to do so. However, there’s no way that you can be certain that all previous non-listeners who now tune in to hear him will disagree.

Actually, American’s don’t want to be told what “not” to do, or what “isn’t” the answer.

They want to know what the answer is, not what it isn’t.

As a professor of Graphic Communication, my professional opinion is that if one of my students created this for a class project it would receive an F. The slogan does not communicate the message properly, especially since they’re using all caps for the text. If they wanted to communicate that they were talking about Rush Limbaugh, they should have set the type to ensure that the ‘R’ in Rush was the only capital letter to help properly enforce the proper name. As it stands now you can easily interpret this billboard as a Republican ad criticizing Obama for his fast-paced dive towards failure in just his first two months.

The other problem with this billboard is the image, while regular listeners to Rush Limbaugh know he’s a cigar aficionado there are several infrequent and non-listeners that have no idea Rush loves to indulge in premium cigars. So, by not having his image on the board, and instead substituting a body stand-in, that looks more like James Bond than Limbaugh – sorry Rush – the ad looses all focus and the message remains unclear.

So much for the party of the great communicator.

BTW I took a quick informal poll, I call up a few colleagues, my parents (both Rush listeners), and even my wife. I asked them a simple question, “If I told you a new billboard was being put up today in Dallas that had a headless picture of someone smoking and said WE DIDN’T VOTE FOR A RUSH TO FAILURE, which political party would you think paid for the ad and at whom do you think the message is intended?”

All of them said the same thing, Republicans and Obama. You see, most people know Obama smokes, and because I phrased it like that (and in one email wrote it all in caps) the message takes on a completely different focus, one that should cause the DNC to scrap this media buy immediately.

How is this a failure? The Democratic strategy is to make Rush Limbaugh the face of the Republican party.

It’s a failure for a couple of reasons:

    1) For the POTUS to get into a brawl with a private citizen, any private citizen, is an admission of weakness. It cheapens the office and makes the President look like a bully. And when you mix it up with a vocal critic like this it makes it look like you’re afraid of what he has to say.

    2) 70% of Americans may not like Rush, but they also don’t like the government trying to silence critics. The more people see these Chicago thug tactics in action the more they’ll come to recognize what they put in office.

    3) Reasons 1 & 2 would be true any time, but add in our very real, very immediate national problems and it looks like the President is wasting his time on a petty personal squabble while the country collapses around him.

    4) Finally, Rush is an entertainer. He thrives on publicity, any publicity. Putting up this billboard is nothing but free advertising for a man they should be ignoring.

But you keep right on fantasizing that this juvenile little tiff is going to make people forget a trillion dollars flushed down the toilet of lefty social engineering.

Someone should put up a billboard right behind it with something cute like:

    Try sticking to the subject.

Yes, Michael Steele has been squishy as RNC chairman. Many conservatives here want him gone. What’s your point? He won’t last long with his inability to state his views.

He did respond to the quote to which you’re obviously eluding:

“I am pro-life, always have been, always will be,” Steele said. “I tried to present why I am pro life while recognizing that my mother had a ‘choice’ before deciding to put me up for adoption. I thank her every day for supporting life. The strength of the pro life movement lies in choosing life and sharing the wisdom of that choice with those who face difficult circumstances.”

“The Republican Party is and will continue to be the party of life,” Steele continued. “I support our platform and its call for a Human Life Amendment. It is important that we stand up for the defenseless and that we continue to work to change the hearts and minds of our fellow countrymen so that we can welcome all children and protect them under the law.”

Besides, I thought Democrats were trying to convince the nation that Rush is the leader of the Republican party, not Michael Steele. In either case, neither is. The RNC chairman is no more the head of the party than Howard Dean is the head of the Democratic party.

    Ilovemycountry said:

    Here’s the exchange:

Steele: “The choice issue cuts two ways. You can choose life, or you can choose abortion. You know, my mother chose life. So, you know, I think the power of the argument of choice boils down to stating a case for one or the other.”

DePaulo: “Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion?”

Steele: “Yeah. I mean, again, I think that’s an individual choice.”

    DePaulo: “You do?”

    Steele: “Yeah. Absolutely.”

Nice pick for RNC head (smiling)

The question was: “Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion?”

NOT: “Do you believe women should have the right to choose abortion?”

According to the current laws, the answer to the former question is “Yes”. The answer to the latter is “No” (according to his response later).

Wishing he’s pro-abortion doesn’t make him so. The gaffe is in expressing himself unclearly, not that he holds a pro-abortion view.
