Bruce Maloy: Hero
A courageous deed. A life sacrificed. An ordinary man who was murdered trying to stop a shooting rampage. We’ll remember:
Many around Samson knew Bruce Maloy as their town’s comedian, a goodhearted, wiry little jokester who was always boasting about hitting it big someday.
In life, he never really got the spotlight he was seeking. But in the days following the massacre that shattered their small Alabama community, some have dropped the comedian label and replaced it with another: Hero.
On Friday, witnesses and authorities said Maloy, the 10th and final victim of Tuesday’s shooting rampage by Michael McLendon, single-handedly tried to end the violence with his beat-up old pickup truck.
With gunshots still echoing through downtown Samson and the killer headed toward a bigger city 12 miles away, Maloy chased McLendon’s dark red Mitsubishi out of town, ramming the vehicle at least once.
Maloy slowed down the killer briefly, and he may have given police and state troopers time to catch up to McLendon, said Geneva County Chief Deputy Tony Helms. But it cost him his life.
“There’s a hero in all of this that nobody is talking about, and that’s Bruce Maloy,” said Jim Stromenger, a dispatcher with the Samson Police Department…
…”He needs some recognition for what he did,” said Harrison. “It was something he always wanted, and now the old boy won’t see it.”

An ordinary man did an extraordinary thing, he probably saved many lives and in the process lost his own. RIP Mr. Maloy.
God bless him, and may he rest in the arms of Our Lord.
As flmom said An ordinary man did an extraordinary thing. We HAVE to teach our people, especially our young men, that standing around in terror waiting for the police, fire department and such is NOT always, or even most of the time, the right thing to do.
Some times the bad guy needs to be stopped NOW before he can do more harm. It is a mind set change we need. Yes, most of the time Heroes are An ordinary man doing an extraordinary thing. When seconds count the police are only minutes away. As we saw at the Virginia Tech shooting one old man who was there did more good that three police departments on the way.
God Bless Bruce Maloy and his family and friends–I am sure he will be missed.
And may Michael McLendon—well I guess it is not my place, but I bet he is.

Keep the change-I’ll keep my guns
Hero indeed. Thank you Mr. Maloy.
May God the Father Almighty, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob rest his Soul and comfort his family.
I hope if I’m ever tested, that I pass with similar bravery. Good form Bruce!
Heroes come in all forms and sizes. May Mr. Bruce Maloy rest in peace.
Everyone of us should be armed everywhere all the time.
Our own government prevents that and this good man is dead because of that.
Sorry to point that out…
RIP my friend!
well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.
The world needs more people like Mr. Maloy. I hope his family can find comfort in knowing he died a hero.
Mr. Maloy there are millions of us who thank you for what you did. Your family has a loss, but God has a hero to welcome home. My faith says God will be pleased. RIP.

He gave his precious life so that others could continue theirs–a selfless act of heroism. May God bless Bruce, his family and friends.
When he woke up that awful morning he could never have imagined that he and his neighbors in town would be assassinated before the day was over. But, due to his heroism many more lived, and I’m betting that’s just the way he would have wanted it. God bless you sir, rest in peace.
May his family and friends find comfort knowing what a hero Mr. Maloy was to us all. R.I.P. Bruce Maloy.
I was just reading the story of Bruce Maloy on another website and thinking that this mans bravery would probably go unnoticed. Thank you, Michelle, for bringing it to our attention. This country could definitely use more Mr. Maloys. He is in a much better, and safer, place now. God bless Mr. Maloy and his family and thank you for your sacrifice.
God bless you, Bruce. You went to your rest having done the right thing.
Anyone know what the gun laws are in AL? Does the state allow it’s citizens to defend themselves?
Alabama–unfortunately Alabama has a May Issue-discretionary-

Personally I resent ANY licensing but it makes the chicken littles feel better I suppose.

Keep the change-I’ll keep my guns
Thanks for the info…not perfect, but much better than Maryland. I just rejoined the NRA and keep forgetting the on-line resources they provide. Thanks for the tip on that too.
I saw the story on fox’s website.
What a HERO! He was so brave & still makes me tear up.
God Bless
In my world, those who go selflessly toward the sound of the guns have a special name:
Stud.
Hooah Mr. Maloy. God speed
Heroes come in all sizes. Your actions speak loudly. RIP Mr. Maloy.
I live in Alabama. I thought it was a must issue state. None-the-less, it might as well be, since I believe most county sheriffs act as if it was. Many citizens of Alabama go armed. I wonder, if Mr. Maloy had been, could things have been different.
Anyway, Bruce Maloy is a man to be respected and remembered.
It’s shameful that the police were minutes away when seconds mattered and hero Maloy was only able to bring a pickup truck to a gun fight.
Thank you, Bruce Maloy.
Yes, as several have already said, most of the time heroes are ordinary people doing an extraordinary thing.
I consider Bruce Maloy an even bigger hero than Todd Beamer and the passengers who stormed the cockpit of the plane over PA on 9/11/2001. Why?
Both heroes took action that saved other peoples’ lives. But while the passengers on that plane were going to die either way (whether they took action or not), Bruce Maloy could have done nothing and lived. Instead, he chose to take action and sacrificed his life in the process.
Mr. Maloy stepped up to the plate big time. He rose to the challenge and helped his fellow man.
May God bless your soul…..you can rest peacefully Mr. Maloy. THANK YOU!
