Obama’s “Special Olympics” joke: The teleprompter made him do it!

Jake Tapper reports that Barack Obama pulled a Joe Biden (or a Barack Obama, for that matter) and ended up mocking the Special Olympics in a lame attempt to make fun of his weak bowling skills. But of course, the White House says he “in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics.” You be the judge:
The first appearance by a sitting president on “The Tonight Show” may well end up being the last.
President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.
Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he’s gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.
He bowled a 129, the president said.
“That’s very good, Mr. President,” Leno said sarcastically.
It’s “like the Special Olympics or something,” the president said.
When asked about the remark, the White House said the president did not intend to offend.
“The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics,” White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said.
Way to go, Soul Fixer.
I blame Obama’s Prompter… or lack thereof.
But this is all just a big distraction.

Look, considering all the other things he has done and said the past two months, this comment is probably the least of his troubles, but I just have to wonder what the reaction to this would have been if it was President George Bush who said it. It remains to be seen how much attention and what kind of reaction the comment will get.
Kim adds: I understand President Obama was trying to make a self-deprecating joke, so I don’t want to make a bigger deal out of this that what it is, but, man that was cringe inducing. At least it was for me since I, like millions of other parents, have a disabled child. I mean his joke is right up there with Joe Biden asking a wheelchair-bound man to stand up. Obama certainly didn’t do anything to quell the teleprompter jokes.
I, too, could make a joke and tell the president to skip the comedy routine and stick to his day job, but he sucks even more at that.

…it’s “like the Special Olympics ” Presidency.
Disclaimer: this is an offhand remark typed after several hours with a family friend in an ICU, and is meant to disparage the Obama Administration, not anyone involved or eligible for the Special Olympics. Now, it would be incorrect of me to suggest that Air Force One be replaced with a short bus, so I won’t.
With all the tasks that lay before him, Obama is working on his bowling average?
While it was a stupid comment that reveals a lot about Obama’s character, we should lay off him. He’s utterly useless and he should be judged on the ridiculous policies he pushes for. This whole incident just adds noise to the issue.
No, we shouldn’t. If a Republican said something like this they would be sent for sensitivity training, sued by the ACLU and humiliated into resignation. This is just one more drop in the giant ocean of hypocrisy in the current political environment. And how does anyone claim this guy is brilliant? Proof, please.
That’s right kids…
Is there a single section of this society that he has NOT insulted in some blatant form? Has there been a single time that he has not been excused with a myriad of excuses?
So what will he blame THIS gaffe on? Will it be jetlag from his trip to Los Angeles? Will it be all the exhaustion from fighting people’s right to make a living and expect payment for services rendered per contractual agreement?
Maybe it is all the partying he was doing on St. Patrick’s Day. After all, there were at least 4 parties, two of which were at night and at least one of them involved drinking.
Maybe he will try to turn it around on all of us and try to say how he was actually giving the athletes of the Special Olympics a boost of encouragement and it was OUR bigotry that made it appear that he was making fun of them.
Whatever it will end up being, you can rest assured that it will receive minimal press, and the fact that he is, once again, recreating and vacationing while this “enormous crisis” is going on will be completely downplayed if not outright ignored.
Bowling, partying, flying all over the country to eat out at restaurants, vacationing nearly every weekend at Camp David, insulting foreign leaders, embracing the enemy of Freedom and Democracy, turning Russia into an enemy again, allowing them to put bombers 90 miles off the Florida coast, adding 3 trillion dollars to our debt, selling out our grandchildren…
And it is only 2 months since he ORIGINALLY took the Oath of Office. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the man truly is a history making machine. And yet, the majority of the people are still allowing him to carry on in this Comedy of Errors. He still, while rapidly dropping, enjoys a high approval rating, which only proves that the people of this nation, by and large, are completely ignorant of current affairs. My own 9 and 11 year olds know more about what is going on and what this fool is doing to our country than 60% of the public.
How much more will he destroy before something is done to stop them?
Good thing he is going to spend thousands, if not millions, of tax payer dollars to remove the White House bowling alley in lieu of putting in a basketball court.
Maybe he can work on his dunks. Yeah…that will make everything better for everyone.
But he is a liberal so we just have to “understand and adjust” to his way of thinking. It would have only been a crime if this had been a conservative speaking … teleprompted or not!
Any Republican at any level would be forced to resign with a comment like this. I sure wish some official from Special Olympics would DEMAND AN APOLOGY.

I happen to know and love someone very dear to me who has Down syndrome. I can tell you that many in the disability communities I read are outraged, Republican and Dem alike. As the parent of a child who is so severely disabled that she could never even hope to compete in the Special Olympics, I am OUTRAGED that Dear Leader would say something like this. Of course, we come to expect that our leaders only pay lip service to the handicapped while secretly holding them beneath contempt or laughing at them. I am OUTRAGED! I hope that every parent of a handicapped child, and every handicapped adult, who voted for this ABOMINATION realizes the error they have made. Wake up, people! How long before his idea of post-birth abortion begins to be applied to our beautiful children? And look at his healthcare plan. Some panel in DC will decide if you are allowed to have a costly procedure based on life expectancy (and value to society, don’t ya know), essentially putting a gun to our children’s heads. My grandson is autistic and also I have a young friend who belongs to our church and has Down Syndrome. My young friend with Down syndrome gave a beautiful talk during a Reflection Day at church.

Having worked with Special Olympics for over 5 years, I came to realize that the parents and volunteers form a very thin, fragile ring of protection around these wonderful people. The parents bore a sometimes heavy, sometimes wonderful cross – they love their children so very much and really just want to see them enjoy life. Every time we heard or experienced a remark like this, you could see a little more pain and sometimes a little more resolve in the parents (and volunteers). We just don’t expect it to come from the President of the United States.

As a teacher of special ed for twelve years (I left when the emotional toll became too heavy to bear), I can tell you that what Obama said was incredibly insensitive and hurtful to not only special ed students, but their parents and other family members as well. He’s the elected leader of our nation – not some media figure – and for him to say things that seem to ignore the challenges and difficulties many families in our country face on a daily basis, regardless of whether off-the-cuff or not, appears to reflect a lack of empathy and understanding on the part of the Oval Office.
I think Mr. Obama needs to personally acknowledge his misspeak and attempt a reconciliation by attending as many Special Olympic events and benefits as possible.

Some years ago, my wife was a care giver for the Virginia Baptist Children’s Home. The residents were mostly young adults with some degree of Down’s. I will say, I never met a group of more loving people in my life. They worked hard, loved everybody, and many held jobs. The home also has a team of bell ringers that go from church to church performing.
They would be very hurt by Obama’s comment.
Btw – the home is supported privately – no government money is taken.

Didn’t catch BHO on Leno–just can’t take him for ten seconds. I always think he’s on some campaign stop, still running for office, which is the ONLY thing he seems capable of doing well. I mean in the sense that he is pretty darn good at lying and connivin’ to tell people only what they want to hear. There will be MANY more gaffes from Barry & Joe that will not be mentioned by the press. Frankly, not surprised at all by his stupid comment on Leno.
I was planning to watch Leno last night but when push came to shove, I had to watch an episode of Walker Texas Ranger instead. Much easier on the blood pressure. And as expected, I am getting the high and lowlights from MM, etc.
Haven’t read all the comments here to know if anyone else caught this…and maybe I’m not being thorough but drudg3 earlier linked to the politico and a few minutes ago linked to abcnews about this bowling thing. The videos (shown via those links) cut off the part where he mentions the Special Olympics. It’s in the text of the article. What’s with that?
It’s called covering for the dolt. Had ANY republican said anything REMOTELY like what Obama said, the media would be all over it for a week. When THE ONE says it, they sweep it under the rug. It’s going to be the SOP of “the mainstream media” (the propaganda arm of THE ONE’S administration) for the next four years, so get used to it.
