GIVE/SERVE Act updates; Senate version passes, 79-19

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 26, 2009 05:06 PM

I’m scheduled to talk about the GIVE/SERVE Act on Glenn Beck’s show at around 5:30pm Eastern. (Update: Watch the vid at Hot Air.)

Quin Hilyer takes a closer look at the creepy national service expansion plans in today’s DC Examiner, and posts an update on one troublesome provision:

Between being first officially “reported” to the House and being voted on by the full House, bill managers stripped one whole section of the measure that created a Congressional Commission on Civil Service, thus removing the section that contained the language cited above concerning “a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people” and a possible requirement for “all individuals in the United States” to perform such service. The section could be restored during the Senate-House conference committee meeting. A new, separate bill containing that language has since been introduced in the House.

Alas, every last cent of the $6 billion in boondoggle spending is still there.

Also this afternoon: An amendment from Sen. Vitter to block ACORN from receiving GIVE/SERVE funds was tabled and ultimately blocked, with an early vote count of 53-43.

***

Sigh: Senate passes the $6 billion boondoggle, 79-19.

This bill scares the bejeebers out of me. I spent high school and college years obsessed by the evil that was done all over the planet in the name of making everyone equal/working for the state. Read everything I could get my hands on and many papers, if given a choice, addressed that issue. We are following too many paths here that have already proven to be wrong.

By engaging children at an earlier age in pre-school, or right out of the crib, they effectively will have longer and greater access to shape what your children believe and their world view will be created by the state, not parents. Parents already face this problem when their children enroll in public school.

I want the GOP to collect and spend money on it workers. The GOP could feild a million strong organized massive GOTV effort that would get the conservatives message out there and compete with the democrats.

Instead we get a GOP that is still far too focused on message management and “saying the right things” to create a “big Tent”

Certainly not GOP grassroots. All i know is that, until McCain came along and lulled you guys to sleep, a Dem would be polling 1 or 2 points ahead, and would invariably lose by 1 or 2. Maybe bad polling. But more likely Republicans have always had a rep for being able to get their constituency out. This is hardly a unique idea.

I would be curious as to what, prior to this election, you say the Dems were doing that you thought was so much better (strictly organizationally speaking).

I have seen with my own eyes groups like ACORN, Moveon.org, VOTE Project, Various Green organizations and others all going door to door. And their numbers have been growing. There are hundreds of left leaning groups that have focused on winning elections. The only difference is that the GOP has had more money to spend and it eqalized things until 2006 when it became more obvious that the Left had started to catch up in the money game.

Until the GOP starts organizing to counter the left it wont be competitive again. The money gap is gone until the right gets its act together.

Neither. Both played a part, but weren’t the primary factor. They were merely the final two moves in the chess match. The setting of the pieces happened long before in the minds and souls of our people. We used to have the Christian work ethic: it’s gone. We used to have universal morality: it’s gone among this age group. We used to cherish freedom, because we knew it was accompanied by responsibility: that’s gone, too. Why? Perhaps that’s because of how they were taught and raised to believe. By their parents? Somewhat. By television? Certainly. Public education? Yep. Church? “Live your best life now.”

If you can make this happen, let me know and I will find a way back to stand side by side with true Americans. As it is now though, I am looking for ways to disappear from the American roles forever! Crikey, Germany had nothing on this mess!

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Thursday blamed the global economic crisis on “white people with blue eyes” and said it was wrong that black and indigenous people should pay for white people’s mistakes.

All three of my young sons are white with blonde hair and blue eyes. Despite what da Silva thinks, my sons are no better or worse than him or his sons. We are all equally of great worth in God’s eyes. I wish he could realize that.

As far as “indigenous” goes, people just didn’t spring up out of the ground in their native soil. Everyone who lives or has lived displaced someone else for property that they couldn’t defend.

Something to think about: What if the American Pilgrims never came here (North America) in the 1600s? What if the USA, or something like it was delayed or never formed? What would have happened if Hitler or someone like him came into power without the goodness and strength of the USA as a protection? Would Hitler have had his way with the world? Who knows, but maybe people should be more thankful about our Western Judeo-Christian heritage. I shudder to think about the state of things had it not held sway.

Michael Sarver got voted off (the C&W dude). Our DVR cut it off literally in mid-sentence and we had to go to the web to find out! The guy is definitely a great entertainer, though…

    Be safe and well.

Long live these United States of America!

P.S. Michelle, I would strongly suggest that you, and the other conservative commentators like Glenn Beck and Rush have some sort of bolt hole to escape to. Obama’s brownshirts will eventually try to come for you and your families. Please plan ahead and be careful. You are all too important to our nation.

It’s not astrophysics (OK, rocket science to the unwashed). Much of the Democrat base is 18-35, i.e. young, stupid and lazy. Up until this past election, they have never turned out in large numbers. That’s tended to skew the polling.

So are you saying it was the candidate or a fundamental shift in organization ability that caused the influx?

In my opinion what fired up the “grassroots” for Dems and these 18-35 Dem voters was Bush and the media’s handling of him. They created, and he helped with people like Rumsfeld, create in their minds an evil emperor. Just think back to the anti-bush crowds, their signs, etc.

It wasn’t anything unique on the part of Dems, but their vilification of Bush and by association, any Republican, that got them fired up and turned out.

But what I actually wanted to say in this thread was that I find it curious that we need $6 billion for a “volunteer” organization.

That’s like paying for free GNU license software.

Of course I know where all the money is going. They have an encyclopedia-sized list of “studies” to be done on these volunteer groups and projects. There is a huge bureaucracy built around this. It’s really sickening.

Oh and if anyone thinks the cost of this is only going to be $6 nillion… think again. It will be more like $26 billion.

This is exactly the kind of program that, had it already existed, should have been unceremoniously CUT from the budget. Instead, we have the Socialist in Chief … ADDING.. this to our unpayable tab, instead of removing it.

This is a sign of things to come. He’s going to Canadize our health care next, regardless of whether we can afford it. So we’ll have the privilege of allowing people like Natasha Richardson to die unnecessarily here, like she did in Canada.

Were it only that, I think we would have beaten him in 2004. All I am saying is I would not put too much faith in the Dem’s grass roots ability until we see it carry over when Obama is NOT on the ticket. Like 2010.

I note the number of Republican votes in favor of this garbage. It is past time to term-limit every incumbent in Congress. Fire them all in 2010 , all Reps., 1/3 of the Senate. None of them is indispensable. I care not about the party anymore. We simply must find, fund, support and vote for those who understand the Constitution, promise to faithfully adhere to it, and will defend it to their death.

And, at some point, they’ll decide to put all of O’s talking points and phrases into a handy little manual…..or book.

And soon we’ll see O’s huge, smiling face plastered all over our nation. Huge billboards and placards will have his wise, all-knowing countenance for us to gaze upon.

I’ve called Sen Timmy-Geithner-is-Uniquely-Qualified Hatch’s offce twice this week. The answers I got:

    1. The language is different in the senate version–there is no “mandatory service” cuz that would be wrong!

    2. The bill is geared toward providing “service learning” opportunities ONLY for disadvatanged kids because it’s been proven to really help them progress.

    riiiiiight.

When I said it bothered me that the feds were trying to force “service” in schools (already here in Utah as part of high school graduation requirements), the Hatchling said, I kid you not, “oh, it’s up to the states to decide that because the federal government doesn’t have, er, control . . . uh . . .”

    “Yet?” I asked politely.

She laughed nervously, I laughed right along with her, then I hung up.

I’m not sure what they’re smokin’ in DC and I too am completely blown away that Hatch would sign up for any of this, much less instigate it.

But after talking to his office, I’m convinced they’re convinced it isn’t a big deal. I think they–at least the staffer I talked to–honestly believes it will benefit disadvantaged youth.

I think it’s a HUGE deal and I agree, it is a slippery slope. The only answers I got to concerns about it morphing into all kinds of mandatory things, who would decide what’s “acceptable” servitude acts, or how to opt out (because my independing-thinking, homeschooled kids would be forced into this when they pry them from my dead, cold fingers) were breathless reassurances that “that would never happen. Service should always be voluntary and government would never, ever force it!”

I didn’t even bother asking how she could be so naive.

    It was a lost cause.

This whole experience has been the greatest thing since sliced bread. At least voting America is showing an acute interest in our political system. So now is the time to get involved, join a local party, canvas, contribute. It is time we, the voters, took the government back, starting at the local level, followed by the state and federal. In my opinion, GIVE/SERVE and ACORN will be the best thing to happen to this administration, it will destroy all confidence in it.
