19,000 mourners fill Oakland Coliseum to honor slain police officers

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 27, 2009 02:45 PM

Law enforcement officials from around the country joined Oakland citizens today to honor four police officers murdered in a bloody shooting spree. The service at the Oakland Coliseum has drawn 19,000 people. Crowd are overflowing.

Full coverage here, with info on how to express condolences and contribute to a memorial fund for the fallen police officers.

Jim Hoft noted yesterday that 60 morons turned out for a demonstration in support of the psychopath who murdered the officers.

In the latest development, the SFChronicle reports that the killer, Lovelle Mixon, had been linked through DNA evidence to the rape of a 12-year-old girl:

The day before Lovelle Mixon unleashed a barrage of gunfire that killed four Oakland police officers, the department’s investigators learned that DNA evidence had linked the fugitive parolee to an unsolved rape this year, authorities said Monday.

The possibility that Mixon feared being arrested for rape is a key factor for investigators trying to understand why the 26-year-old Oakland man opened fire on two motorcycle officers who pulled him over for a traffic stop Saturday afternoon at 74th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard.

Witnesses said Mixon stood over the wounded officers, Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, and Officer John Hege, 41, and fired at least one round into each with a handgun before fleeing on foot to his sister’s apartment half a block down 74th, acting Police Chief Howard Jordan said.

Although the reason for the traffic stop isn’t known, Jordan said witness accounts indicate that Dunakin, possibly suspicious of what turned out to be a fake driver’s license, motioned to Hege to remove Mixon from his car just before Mixon opened fire.

When SWAT officers, acting on a tip, later stormed the nearby apartment, Mixon opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle, killing Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35, and wounding Sgt. Pat Gonzales before other officers shot him to death.

At first, police suggested that Mixon might have shot the motorcycle officers because he knew he was being sought for skipping a meeting with his parole officer in February, something that would have resulted in a prison sentence of no more than six months.

Had he been convicted of rape, however, Mixon could have been looking at a state prison sentence of several years.

If anyone is ever visiting DC, one of the places just off the beaten path is the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which honors those killed in the line of duty. It is really a beautiful, solemn memorial.

Every May, officers from all over the country come here for a ceremony where the names of those officers killed in the past year are memorialized. it is quite a sight if you are around then.

Also, stop by the Irish Times, a bar nearby where all the cops seem to congregate that week, and check out the very impressive collection of law enforcement patches from all over the world.

I live in the area, my wife works in Oakland and I used to work there. This is the most corrupt city in the State. Or, my theory is that Oakland does get the funds, the politicians just steal it.

You can go to YouTube and watch the videos of those apologists claiming that Lovelle was a “king” and a “soldier” and that he died fighting the corruption of the White policemen and how he is just like Marcus Garvey and all sorts of other filth.

It is just more victim mentality filth. You know, how White people have nothing better to do than think up new and unique ways of keeping the Black Community oppressed. For some reason, the White Community just has it out for Blacks in this country. Whites pump drugs into their community and force them to become addicts, force cheap alcohol into the community and pour it in their mouths through funnels in order to make them all alcoholics, they have set up labs all over the country to formulate new diseases strictly to wipe out Blacks and no one else…

Yes, the Whites in this country surely has it out for the Blacks. Why, if the White Community could just dedicate HALF of the time it spends on thinking up new and exciting ways to frame and oppress the Black Community on other issues, we could end world hunger in a week.

It is the Liberals and their views that allows for these thugs to get out on parole when they KNOW they have no business being on parole in the first place.

And I hope that Ahhhhnold was paying close attention. This thug was out on parole for a non-violent crime. The same type of crime he has decided is good enough to let thousands and thousands of this states convicts out of prison LONG before they are even up for parole, let alone finished with their sentence…all in the name of saving money. I watched the funeral procession along 880 North. It was a very moving sight watching family, friends, firefighters, and law enforcement officers taking these four fallen to their final resting place. Heartbreaking.

After an unfortunate shooting incident in January, there were protests, rioting and vandalism in certain sections of Oakland in the days following. Most of this was happening very close to where I work – Downtown Oakland.

The Oakland police were out on those days in the hours before night fall to be sure that commuters, shoppers, residents and workers all made it out of that area safely so they could go home to their families unharmed. They assisted the local business district by requesting building management in the immediate surrounding areas (of scheduled protests) by keeping them informed of the protests and encouraging them to dismiss their employees early from work on a few days of when tensions were high. They were out on foot patrol those days, providing service and protection.

All too often, their efforts to keep their citizens safe go unappreciated, unrecognized and unnoticed.

Thank you Oakland PD, Oakland Officers, and SWAT for your service and protection. And God’s Speed to your four fallen. May they rest in peace.
