Introducing “Barack Obama Academy”
It’s official:
The Oakland school board has voted to change the name of a small school to Barack Obama Academy, reportedly the first middle school in the country to adopt the name of the nation’s 44th president.
While Obama has been in office fewer than 100 days, the 35 students at the former Alternative Learning Community public school persuaded the board Tuesday to make what they said was a historic change.
Several students prepared statements and then sat for hours Tuesday night waiting for their turn.
“They sat there 3 1/2 hours before they were allowed to speak,” said their school principal, Toni McElroy. “They carried themselves Barack-like.”
The students told the board the old name was too negative, district officials said. The students received a standing ovation at the meeting after the unanimous vote.
“These are students that people have written off,” McElroy said. “They were able to see that if you really push and if you really are motivated and consistent that you can make a change.”
The students celebrated Wednesday shouting the new name throughout the halls, the principal said.
A commenter at SFGate.com diagnoses the problem perfectly: “If the name of the school, rather than the achievement of educational excellence, is the motivating factor for the kids then the school is very much like its namesake…lots of slogans, lots of hype, no substance.”

The video was shot before the election by a teacher (subsequently suspended) in the KCMO public schools.

Not a law but it should be. After all, changing the name of hundreds of inner-city schools to Martin Luther King has had such spectacular results in improved student performance. And all major streets and parks should have their names changed as well to help with self-esteem of the residents.

MLK Drive where I live divides multitudes of public housing apartments, which seems to be the norm in many cities. BTW, “Alternative Learning Centers” is the name usually given to schools set up to take the most idiotic kids who’ve been kicked out of regular public schools. It’s either put them in there or in jail.

Oh and if you missed it, I thought it was too funny on the school that chose to do this.

Alternative Learning School. Sounds like “alternative lifestyles” or “alternative investments”. No good ever seems to come from anything containing the words “alternative” or “comprehensive”. Bad school of juvenile delinquents after a bad president. I don’t see a problem.

The SF Gate edits comments and letters to the editor big time. One reason I quit posting there, for whatever I’d post would be altered, often totally destroying the substance of what I was saying. I used to live right up the street from Johnny Jihad’s “school” and I went to the real high school next door. Everybody knew the students in the “alternative” school were dopers and losers that couldn’t hack reality.

What the hell does that even mean? following the “ceremony”, after making these “students” wait over three and a half hours, they do what all young Liberals do…run through places chanting and hollering.
The Obama Disease that has swept through the Black Community…and that is pretty much the best way to describe it…is nothing short of terrifying and should be studied by psychologists.
As I had predicted when I presented the link to the “Barack Hussein Obama” forum, the trolls and gasping fish wasted no time in attempting to debunk the site, claiming it was all part of the Right-Wing Conspiracy to once again, defame a powerful Black man.
Well it does not take much effort to go on Google, type in “African-American Forum” and come up with any number of similar forums, from any number of reputable sources. And just what is being said on such forums?
Well they talk about various conspiracies about who is plotting to assassinate him. Is it the Arabs? Is it the Klan? And what about Lovelle Maxim’s message to Der Fuhrer? Obviously the murderer of four policemen had a message to get out, right? Those links are from the Topix forum group and is a VERY reputable forum.
There is all kinds of stuff out there claiming one conspiracy or another. A good deal of them actually hoping that Whites will do something that will set off bigger riots and more.
This is “Barack like”? Is this more of what we have to look forward to? My God, to think that in less than three quarters of a century, we would be witnessing the repetition of something that could have and should have been stopped when it was beginning…and to watch exactly how it all took place…ring side seats…front row center.
Do a follow up on these students in ten years and see how many are in prison or have out of wedlock kids.Any bets?

Why do I get the feeling that this school doesn’t exactly offer a rigorous curriculum? Seriously, what alternatives were these young people learning?
If the name change keeps these young people out of criminal and socially unproductive conduct, fine–have at it. Indeed, Obama should pour money into this school–let’s see how they deal with it. Years and millions of dollars later, I’m betting that nothing will have changed. And the only answer will be more money.

I believe the original pre-P.C. name was “Continuation School”. The school where the violent, trouble making, horrible children went after they had been expelled from all the regular schools.

An appropriate choice, I think. When you break down the original name, it makes perfect sense that this school would take that first step in changing their image. Yes, image. Nothing else has changed, has it? Like good liberals, appearance is more important that achievement.
Alternative – Different interpretation of reality.
Learning – By the black standard, which we all know is different than the American standard.
Community – Commune. Communist. A collection of like minds working for a single purpose, or idea.
Public school – A necessary inconvenient label needed to claim tax dollars that will pay for everything.

Senator James Webb (D) of Virginia is bringing up American Prison Reform he wants an over haul he wants to kick nonviolent offenders out and put the violent offenders behind bars. I have two more months until my resignation from awful public schooling. It is the pits, and I can’t whine enough about how silly it is becoming, and I live in a ritzy suburb in Texas.
We have hell to pay in the future.
This week, my principal shuts down regular school to only teach the standardized tests in every class. We do this for three weeks.
To pass the test, students need 30 correct answers out of 55. High standards, indeed.
Bogtrotter, I wouldn’t be allowed to put a question like that on a test for my chemistry classes. Not because of its content, but because I have been forbidden from putting a math problem with more than one step on the test.

Point is, how do you teach chemistry with that threshhold? Well, you don’t. I told them I would quit since they didn’t think I would “play ball” with them(I’m not supposed to fail more than 3 kids per class). They asked me to stay because they needed someone there everyday to make sure the attendance is correct. Attendance has become the main way the gov’t bases funding for a school.
