Leave the lights on: Celebrate Human Achievement Hour

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 28, 2009 10:44 AM

I mentioned earlier this week that my friends at CEI are leading a counter-movement today to answer the enviro-nitwits’ “Earth Hour” with Human Achievement Hour.

Leave the lights on between 8:30pm and 9:30pm and watch this video with your friends and family!

I just talked to my brother in Vegas. He didn’t know about this so I filled him in. He just turned on the 1100 watt light for his flag. Running the AC and heater for the big temperature dual, TV and stereo on and cooking dinner in the microwave. All from a 5th wheel. Gotta love little brothers.

I think you’ll find that LGF has gone off the rails quite a bit. While Charles is still occasionally on-target with some things, he seems increasingly driven by his raid hatred of anything “creationist”. and the overall timbre of his blog has gone a bit nuts. he still has a few loyal readers, but is hemorraghing readership as he continues his anti-creationist crusade.

It’s too bad too. LGF used to be a required stop in a Conservative blog tour. I don’t know what happened, but somehow we lost Charles.

As far as “Human Acheivement Hour” I (unfortunately) was unaware of it until today, the next day. However, since I refused to celebrate the faux earth-hour lunacy, I already had all the lights and PCs on. So I was de-facto celebrating it. ;)

It was one of the first “Sick Building” reports I can remember, and one of the things that the left forgets because it no longer fits their agenda. It may be needed again someday, when the mercury starts to build up in the dumps.

And I forgot to mention this Fox news story regarding the “Copenhagen Accord”.

To meet Stern’s 2050 goals, he says, among other things, “most of the world’s electricity production will need to have been decarbonized.”

By way of comparison, according to the U.S. Department Of Energy, roughly 72 percent of U.S. electrical power generation in 2007 was derived from burning fossil fuels, with just 6 percent coming from hydro-power and less than 3 percent from non-nuclear renewable and “other” sources. And even then, those “other” non-fossil sources included wood and biomass — which, when burned, are major emitters of carbon.

Even during Earth Hour. President of the Tennessee Center For Policy Research Drew Johnson takes a Saturday drive by Al Gore’s during the time most environmentalists went dark:

I pulled up to Al’s house, located in the posh Belle Meade section of Nashville, at 8:48pm – right in the middle of Earth Hour. I found that the main spotlights that usually illuminate his 9,000 square foot mansion were dark, but several of the lights inside the house were on.

In fact, most of the windows were lit by the familiar blue-ish hue indicating that floor lamps and ceiling fixtures were off, but TV screens and computer monitors were hard at work. (In other words, his house looked the way most houses look about 1:45am when their inhabitants are distractedly watching “Cheaters” or “Chelsea Lately” reruns.)

The kicker, though, were the dozen or so floodlights grandly highlighting several trees and illuminating the driveway entrance of Gore’s mansion.

I [kid] you not, my friends, the savior of the environment couldn’t be bothered to turn off the gaudy lights that show off his goofy trees.

Exactly. If mankind can extinct the planet, more power to us. It’s natural selection, baby! Besides, if we can kill all plant life, then we’ll be able to return the earth’s atmosphere to its pristine condition before all of those trees polluted it with all of that oxygen.

They give me migraines. I have to take incandescents on trips to screw into the hotel sockets so I don’t spend most of my time in the dark with a wet washrag over my face.

I spent yesterday trapped in a school building basking in the big Fluos only to turn around and enjoy the same thing this morning in church. I finally had to come home and cozy up to an incandescent, but it’s too late. I’m going to have to take a painkiller and look for the sunglasses and the cold rag soon.

I buy extra incandescents every month. My husband thinks I’m crazy, but the fluorescents don’t bother him (except the part where he gets to listen to me gripe endlessly about yet another government intrusion into our lives.)

I just want to know where Al’s hiding my special dispensation to keep on using what doesn’t take a HazMat crew to dispose of . . . or did he save it for his power-sucking mansion?

Earth Hour, quite simply, is a scam. People are duped into thinking they can make a difference by turning off the lights for an hour and then quickly turning them back on (something which wastes energy, by the way). If people truly cared about the environment, they would calmly offer solutions to what others can do everyday instead of telling people to turn off their lights and appliances like doofuses for one hour a year. Sure, people get angry when you counter the false logic of this Earth Hour (and boy, did someone get mad at me on my blog!) but really common sense is what people should be aiming for.

    The Bottom Line

The earth’s climate (in contrast to the climate in current climate GCMs) is dominated by a strong net negative feedback. Climate sensitivity is on the order of 0.3°C, and such warming as may arise from increasing greenhouse gases will be indistinguishable from the fluctuations in climate that occur naturally from processes internal to the climate system itself.
