San Francisco education reform: Be like Jimi Hendrix

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 30, 2009 01:48 PM

Reason number 99,997,678 to homeschool your kids, via the SFChronicle:

There was a time when teachers would freak at the sound of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” or “Stone Free.” Now the San Francisco school district wants them to get in the spirit.

“Remember the first time you heard Jimi Hendrix?” reads the cover of the district’s new 51-page education guide. “Our plan is as transformational now as his music was then!”

The manifesto is aimed at transforming the educational “experiences for every child in each of our schools.”

To drive home the point, a portrait of the ’60s rocker – looking somewhat pensive, somber and perhaps stoned – graces the cover and every page of the manual.

The book also comes with a Hendrix poster and Hendrix-emblazoned canvas bag, which were handed out to a couple hundred administrators at Superintendent Carlos Garcia’s back-to-school confab in September.

Just what your kid needs: Government teachers pimping drug-addled rock stars as transformational heroes.

I will stand for a lot and I will endure many arrows slung my way. I will not, however, countenance calling Jimi Hendrix a “drug-addled rock star.”

Amy Winehouse is a drug-addled rock star.

Trent Reznor is a drug-addled rock star.

Jimi Hendrix was a drug-addled rock SUPERstar.

He’s a complete disaster as a role model. Other than an amazing musical talent, what part of his life would you want your kids to emulate?

He died basically alone. For all of his sexual exploits there is no woman who can truly say that they had anything like a real relationship with him (although many have claimed it). He had few, if any, actual friends. Plenty of hangers-on, but friends?

As was said here, Hendrix lived a drug-hazed existence, largely alone in a crowd.

What a complete disaster as a role model.

The fact that you would compare him to Janis Joplin of all people indicates to me you may not be the best judge of music; at least not classic rock. That’s like comparing Mozart to Salieri.

So was Murtha, not exactly proof of quality. That being said, Hendrix was an excellent musician, but not a superstar or a god. Isn’t that enough? I also think Janis Joplin absolutely owns “Bobby Magee.” But that was her one big accomplishment.

I recognize your brand of sarcasm from previous postings, but it also helps to illustrate the point (I think; these posts tend to go astray) that drug addled rock stars, regardless of talent level, should not be the role models for schoolchildren.

Sorry, but Hendrix’s music was not “transformational.” Hendrix was one of the greatest electric guitarists to ever live and by far the most naturally talented one I ever saw (and I saw all of his contemporaries and him twice). But a lot of his music sucked and his music didn’t come anywhere close to having the influence that the music of Cream and then Led Zeppelin had.

This guy was my ‘guitar hero’.
    I never got into drugs.
    I don’t drink.
    I never smoked.
That guy kept me out of trouble.
I’d come home from school, do my homework, grab my guitar, and put Jimi on the turntable.
I’ve read a lot of biographies on this man, and it’s been stated by many who knew him personally that he was a gentlemen, he was generous to a fault, and was somewhat quiet and shy offstage. However, I’ve also read numerous anecdotes that made me realize that he was human and far from perfect.
Some stories even had me thinking: “What a jerk!”
His music is an acquired taste, I’ll agree to that.
But the man WAS talented, and played the guitar like no one else.
    He burned out too soon.
Lastly, he did not die of a drug overdose. But choking to death on your own vomit is not a dignified exit.

I’m not sure what the point of using Jimi in this ‘manifesto’ is….
But I’d bet money that somewhere, Jimi is wondering the same thing.

Blinding Hypocrisy! On one hand, here they are encouraging REAL diversity – individual ACHIEVEMENT, (not that Jimi’s ultimate achievement of dying young was a very good example but no one would disagree that in music he was indeed a trail blazer).

Individualism is something I highly advocate myself though there are better examples throughout history to be had, (like Galileo fighting the wide consensus that the earth was flat for example).

But then they turn around and STIFLE individual achievement, stifle diversity with homogenized, march to the beat of the SLOWEST drummer, public education where gifted children rarely stand a chance of ever realizing the extent of their God given talent.

I can’t figure them out, liberals speak with forked tongues.

Why can’t the people who advocate this stuff follow Jimi’s lead before they have a chance to screw up children?

Hendrix’ talent doesn’t have to be re-described but his throwing it all away for dope should be. Once again, the left shows it’s affinity for the ’60′s and a refusal to let go. I think these people just can’t get used to simple things like responsibility and honest work so they make those things a crime.

But hey, one day, maybe the Libs who spout this nonsense will do the world a favor and OD like Jimi (actually a “Mamma Cass” incident would be better, the ham sandwich would shut them up). That would prove Darwin right once and for all.

Here people talk about what a bold stand they are taking by attending a Tea Party. How about taking a bold stance by removing your children from state-run education? How about turning off the television, or *gasp* throwing the thing out, for a change? Like most Christians who think they are bold for wearing a tshirt with some lyrics on it, most “conservatives” don’t have the slightest clue what we’re up against nor how to combat it.

Yeah, he died choking on his own vomit, but that was due to the malpractice of the French ambulance drivers. See now what the cost of socialized medicine is? Let’s face it, as a role model, no dice. But as the author of the best ever 12 bar blues song ever written (Red House), he can teach my kids to play guitar any day. Er, if he didn’t look worse than the Crypt-keeper after a weekend bender by now. But if he were alive…!

I saw Hendrix twice and Winter half a dozen times, both in their prime. I’d say Hendrix was a level above Winter and I can find you a hundred professional guitarists who would agree. But then taste in music is also subjective, so which is “better” is more a matter of opinion than anything else.

BTW, RandyS, Hendrix died in Notting Hill — London.

Sorry,…they are the last ones whose opinion I would pay attention to.

Many artists were stark raving luntics, drug users, or drunks. I don’t know why that is true but it is.

The traits that produce intense creativity, also have ugly side effects. Depression, ADD, bipolar, etc people tend to be intensely creative (sometimes only in spurts).
Once, during a month-long bout with depression, I wrote 70 songs.

Currently looking into doing that. Well, not removing, since my son has never darkened the doors of a public school.
Public school was not kind to this ADDer, and my son has many of the same issues I did. Many of the problems I face today are the result of my 7 years of gov’t education before transferring to a Christian school. I would send him to that one, but it closed a couple of years ago.

That and with the indoctrination going on (which will only get worse) I’m not entrusting my offspring to those losers.
