Dohbama strikes again, disses U.K. Updated: Will the Queen re-gift the iPod?

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 1, 2009 01:20 PM

Dohbama strikes again. And just in time for April Fool’s Day! Via WSJ, hat tip – QDH). Where art thou, Teleprompter of the US?

The goods news out of London is that Barack Obama has reaffirmed America’s “special relationship” with the U.K. The bad news is that the “affinity and kinship” that the U.S. president spoke of apparently only extends to England.

Mr. Obama’s first major foreign trip has been seen as a test not just of his leadership skills, but of his ability to navigate the protocols of diplomacy. In the U.K., that means mentioning the famous special relationship between the countries, which has been important here ever since Winston Churchill first referenced it after World War II.

On Wednesday at a joint conference with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Mr. Obama made a pass at acknowledging the special relationship. Unfortunately, he inadvertently broke a cardinal protocol by at one stage using England to denote U.K.

“We owe so much to England; that when you come here there’s that sense of familiarity, as well as difference, that makes it just a special place,” he said, leaving Wales, Northern Ireland and Mr. Brown’s home country of Scotland out in the cold.

But in a statement to make any republican-minded Scots wince, Mr. Obama conceded one thing he loved about the U.K. — the Queen.

On a related note, I am having a hard time envisioning Michelle Obama curtsying to anyone. (I *can* picture her demanding reciprocation.) How about you?

U.S. security personnel and advisers have already visited the palace to check the arrangements and take advice on protocol, such as the neck bow that Mr. Obama is expected to make, and the curtsy Michelle Obama will have been advised to deliver, a person familiar with the matter said.

***

Snort:

Barack Obama met the Queen at Buckingham Palace today and gave her a gift of an iPod loaded with video footage and photographs of her 2007 visit to the United States. In return, the Queen gave the President a silver framed photograph of herself – apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries.

The Queen already has an iPod, a 6GB silver Mini version she bought in 2005 at the suggestion of Prince Andrew.

More hilarity: A Queen music mix?

And confirmation that this was not a joke.

I liked Jonah Goldbergs take on BO’s gift to the Queen

Diplomatic jaws dropped across the continent yesterday when it was revealed that U.S. President Barack Obama had, once again, fumbled a routine protocal of international statecraft: finding the right gift for a foreign leader or head of state. In a private ceremony with Queen Elizabeth, Her Royal Highness bequeathed to the Obamas one of the earliest known copies of William Shakespeare’s Henry V. She also presented him with the framed orginal sheet music of John Newton’s “Amazing Grace.” To the Obama daughters, the Queen gave a dollhouse-sized replica of Windsor Castle with a functioning train station in the year of the compound. They also received a prize Shetland pony. Mrs. Obama was given a ruby ring commissioned and worn by Queen Victoria.

The Obamas, unfortunately, did not seem prepared for the occasion despite the row set off by the exchange of gifts between Prime Minister Brown and the U.S. President barely a month ago. Mr. Obama rather unceremoniously handed the Queen a shopping bag from the Duty Free shop at Heathrow airport. It contained a signed paperback copy of Dreams of My Father, purchased at the WH Smith shop at the airport, a bottle of Johnny Walker Scotch (black label), a CD of the Swedish band ABBA’s greatest hits (still in shrink wrap with a 2-for-1 sticker on it) and ten bags of M&Ms with the presidential seal on them.

The Queen responded in a rather flat: “How delightful.”
    don_blanco on April 1, 2009 at 2:28 PM

Yes, that’s true (220v vs. 110v) but his gift uses neither. What was not reported was that it came with a two-story combo solar/windmill unit so as not to cause any carbon footprint. That was recommended to ODopey by his teleprompter. By the way, on another blog someone mentioned Jonah Goldberg’s comments on this (provided). Hilarious!!

He was the UK’s greatest leader, not the leader of England. Isn’t it ignoring the fact that he led Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well?

    How insulting.

Or if you want to say context is important, what about the fact that, hey, Obama is in freaking England. Which is a separate country.

Other news disagrees with this “first” assessment.

The queen and her husband entertained the Obamas in her private audience room, which overlooks the palace gardens where thousands of daffodils and other flowers were in bloom.

The room, which is part of the queen’s private quarters, is frequently used for private meetings with visiting leaders. Recent visitors included the prime ministers of Canada and Australia. source

Also in that same article, the President’s car blocked Prince Charles from entering the Palace.

It’s not everyday the American president’s driver is told to move his bulletproof car.

But Queen Elizabeth II’s handlers made the request Wednesday after President Barack Obama’s reinforced Cadillac limousine was found to be blocking the garden entrance driveway at Buckingham Palace.

After it was moved, Jaguars carrying Prince Charles and other members of the Royal family pulled up for the queen’s reception for leaders attending Thursday’s G-20 summit.

They will wait by the private apartments, after which the 82-year-old monarch, Philip and Obama will retire to one of the palace’s private rooms to talk for around 25 minutes.

considering the “historic” and “inspiring” ascendency of a black man to the Presidency of the US, the box was a very sentimental and well thought gesture.

It was a gift on behalf of all of the US, including, most especially, the black folks who had truly been repressed. That BHO is not an AFRICAN American, but a BLACK American (ok, even writing that makes my skin crawl, he is neither, as far as I can tell) anyway, where was I? Oh yes… that he is a black man who managed to stealwin the Presidency is reason enough to give a gift that denotes slavery and repression.

We cannot have it both ways, either this was a historic election (and begrudgingly I admit it was) that represents how far we have come as a society, or it does not. The media made his race the crux of the battle. The box was a very appropriate recognition of that struggle.

And Obama wasn’t descended from slaves, but no one seemed to care about that when Brown gave Obama the box made from a famous anti-slaving ship.

considering the “historic” and “inspiring” ascendency of a black man to the Presidency of the US, the box was a very sentimental and well thought gesture.

Well said, Mainah . First of all, even comparing the beauty of such symbolism to the “Hey, this is cool” iPod gift for the Queen is stunning. Not to mention that William Wilberforce, an Englishman, led the campaign which resulted in the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which abolished slavery in most of the British Empire. Still, don’t expect chapoutier to *get it*.

Ignorance of Great Britain doesn’t stop at B.Obama. Time and time again we hear Yanks referring to the UK as England. Many Americans claim descent from Scottish, Welsh and Irish ancestors. That is fine and well but when we hear the Scottish descendants speak it is all shortbread and tartan and Bonnie Prince Charlie, which is a crock of nonsense. Many many Scots fought against the “Bonnie (effeminate) Prince. He was no friend of Scotland! As for the Irish in America, they are the ones that supply the IRA with most of the funds it needed to buy bombs and guns to terrorise the UK population for so many years. If you want to continue to offend UK citizens who are not English, then by all means continue to refer to us all as England.
We will continue to be ever grateful to the Government and Citizens of New York for the help and Deliverance they provided to the UK in WW2.
    {once again /RANT}
I hope you get my drift!

P.S. Thanks for the Ipod and the DVDs :)

Hey, he was elected- by deceit and smoke and mirrors doesn’t matter. You get what you deserve America. A clueless empty suit, complete with a classless first lady. As times goes on with The Messiah, W never looked better. Bloody fist bump that blokes…

President and Mrs. Bush gave Her Majesty a bronze statuette “High Desert Princess” with a personal inscription on the bottom of the base. It is a replica of the original life size statue that is located in front of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Ft. Worth, Texas.

President and Mrs. Bush gave The Prince Philip an exclusive sterling silver eagle box by Tiffany & Co. with personal inscription on the inside lid.

President and Mrs. Bush gave Their Majesties a leather presentation box filled with a collection of documents from the National Archives. One of the items was a copy of an original letter from President Roosevelt to her father, King George, written in 1938. There were also photos from previous royal visits and a DVD of the footage from the Queen’s visit to the United States when she was Princess Elizabeth in 1951.

Good thing we no longer have a dunce in the White House, eh?
