In Rio de Janeiro, they are building a huge wall to keep the ever extending favelas (slums) from impinging on the rain forest! When I lived there 50 years ago as a child, the favelas contained the poorest people I have ever seen. They lived in filth on a hillside in cardboard boxes – they still do. No running water, no toilets.
For a country that is becoming a world oil power, I sure hope this Brazilian Mr. Brown Eyes manages to open them and lifts at least one digit to ameliorate lift the depth of this poverty.
