Surprise: Colorado Democrats help defeat DREAM Act legislation

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 6, 2009 10:09 PM

Well, this is very noteworthy. Today, the Colorado state legislature defeated an illegal alien in-state tuition discount bill. Five Democrats crossed over and joined pro-enforcement Republicans to kill the DREAM Act legislation. Open borders lobbyists and local columnists poured on the victim-card propaganda, but taxpayers weren’t buying it. And Democrats are starting to listen.

Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come:

Democratic Sens. Morgan Carroll of Aurora, Jim Isgar of Hesperus, Moe Keller of Wheat Ridge, Linda Newell of Littleton and Lois Tochtrop of Thornton voted against the bill.

Carroll, after the debate, referred reporters to a statement on her website that said she could not support the bill “in a climate where the state is cutting or eliminating over $1 billion of benefits to the people and is facing a $300 million cut to higher education, which virtually ends higher education as we know it in the state of Colorado.”

Isgar and Tochtrop made similar comments about cuts to colleges, while Keller declined comment on her vote.

Newell, who was elected in November by a razor-thin margin, simply said “I listened to my constituents” when asked about her vote.

Hope. Change.

Burn the phone lines as often as needed calling BOTH parties. It is just about our only hope ’til Nov 2010. (at the very earliest)

One of the BIGGER reasons I left the state was it’s PRO ILLEGAL stance in just about everything.

Illegal alien driving without a licence, insurance or registration. You get to always be first handled in court, no matter how late you show up. Pay 1/5th of the official fine, promise to get all that fixed and we will refund you all but $10 of your paid fines when you return to show you fixed it.
An American citizen, busted for not having your valid driver’s license on your person at the time you got pulled over for doing nothing wrong. Wait for all the illegals to get heard first, see how lenient the judge is, no matter how beligerant the defendant or blatantly dangerous their offense was. Get in front of the judge, prove that you did in fact have a legal license, but had to wait for it in the mail from the government, which sent it 60 days late and then get fined every single possible penny the law allows the state to impose upon you.

I am 40 years old, was 36 when i moved to Utah, in one year living in Utah, I witnessed more accidents than I have in my entire life up to that point and after that point. here in Texas 1 year = 1 accident. California for 6 years, 5 accidents. Iowa, Ohio, Florida, Texas 30 years combined, about 40 accidents. Living in Ogden Utah for 1 year, I witnessed a minimum of 1 accident a week and some weeks and even some days 5 accidents. Total accidents witnessed, 132 in Utah alone.

Actively, consistently, continuously enforcing existing laws will send the message that we are serious about our laws. Changing them to accomodate people breaking them sends the opposite message. And not just to those already here. Millions are waiting to see which tack we take. Amnesty will set off a stampede like we have not seen before. Enforcement will start the flow in the other direction as the jobs and benefits dry up. Those pushing for amnesty are for surrendering to the demands of the illegal aliens and their employers, abandoning the rule of law and surrendering our sovereignty. We should not change the laws to suit those breaking them.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can’t be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don’t stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.
