Its a big frigging ocean. Those are big friggin ships. Those ships are loud and there’s constant ‘waves’ crashing on the sides. Theres only a few crew members to run the whole ship but there are 24 hours in a day. When you are 3-400 MILES out to sea you are not expecting for a few guys in a speedboat to show up.

Standing on the shore of Cali of Florida or taking cruise in the Bahamas IS NOT the open ocean. Its a whole different world off the continental shelf.

After days, months, years of staring into the ocean on watch, most likely youre loking for a 1000ft container ship not a 20ft speedboat that can disappear behind any of the 100 waves that are around you. Even if you have been warned.

I wonder if the insurance policies for these companies covers losses due to piracy. If so, they may be relatively disincentivized to do much.

I know when I shipped something once that piracy wasn’t covered. I asked – as a joke – and they said no. But not sure about their ship.

Another option is to deploy 1st BN 160th Aviation Regt, 2/14 Infantry Bn, 10th Mountain Div, and 3rd Bn 75th Rangers to the area with a boatload of fire support.

Their op order would just say “Pay Back.”

I saw water hoses used on green peace while all of us were armed with saws, and M16A2s. It was great fun to watch. That water was always cold in Scotland.

It certainly could. But you have to bear in mind that many countries make a very thorough search if they suspect any kind of weapon on board a merchant ship
