Environmentally-friendly restaurant delivers pizza 800 miles for ‘green’ president
Friday, pizza from a place called “Pi,” a self-described “green” restaurant, will be delivered to the White House.
Sure, pizza being delivered to the White House isn’t necessarily news (unless it’s 15 years ago and the delivery girl is named “Monica”), but on Friday, the owner of Pi, who flew to DC from St. Louis, ingredients in tow, will prepare the pies in the White House kitchen:
Chris Sommers, owner of a pizza place in St. Louis, gets orders from all over town. But from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C.?
“It’s surreal, it’s a huge honor,” says Sommers, 33, who flew to the nation’s capital Thursday to make 20 pizzas for the Obama family and staff.
So how did a St. Louis pizza guy end up in the White House kitchen?
The president first tasted Sommers’s San Francisco-style pies, served at his St. Louis restaurant Pi, while campaigning in Missouri last fall. An Obama supporter, Sommers offered to deliver a few frozen pies to the president after the election but was told he couldn’t send food to the White House because of security concerns.
Instead, Reggie Love, one of the president’s closest aides and a fellow fan of Sommers’s deep-dish and thin-crust creations, arranged to have the pizza chef bring 20 pounds of dough and 3 gallons of sauce at his own expense to the White House kitchen and cook there Friday.
By DC standards, it’s not a large transfer of dough, and unless the pizzas are intercepted by pirates en route to the nation’s capital, they’ll be consumed shortly — but the only thing “green” about them will be the oregano and possibly peppers.
We need look no further than Pi’s website to see that Obama probably appreciates more than just the taste of the pizza — go here and click on “community” (naturally) at the bottom of the page. Does all this sound familiar?:
Pi is committed to environmentally benign success. Doing good while doing well is fundamental to our work, and is manifested in our commitment to create an ecologically sustainable restaurant.
Today, this concept is hardly relegated to the realm of an obscure few; it resonates with our customers, and they become enlightened and aware, acting as environmental stewards and leaders of change
It’s as if a bus carrying members from ACORN and the Alliance for Climate Protection crashed into a Little Caesars and set up shop.
Here’s the part of Pi’s website that knocks everything back down to reality with unintentional effectiveness:
The EPA defines “sustainable” as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
It’s good to know that a pizza place claims to be trying to meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations, because the people they’re delivering pizza to aren’t.
Now let’s all go plant some trees so the Obamas and their staff can enjoy the environmentally-friendly meal free from the carbon footprint guilt that a 1,600 mile round-trip pizza delivery might normally bring.

I lived in the Chicago ‘burbs for several years…there is no better pizza in the world than a Chicago-style pizza, be it thin crust, or deep dish. Lou Malnati’s, Gino’s, Giordano’s, Aurelio’s…oh, man, am I hungry. I need to make a trip back home…

I read about Reggie Love during The One’s campaign. He got his present job from Obama’s press secretary. It’s good to be king and bring your pals along for the ride. Bush couldn’t even get a cameo as a pizza delivery man on the TV show “West Wing” in 2001–partisan politics in the media being what it is.
At least he was flown in to make the pizza in the White House. I was expecting to read that Obama sent a flotilla of helicopters to pick up one pizza with orders to deliver it in 30 minutes or less. “It’s COLD!! Go back and get me a HOT pizza this time!”

It’s amazing to see commercials of all these companies trying to out-green another! Just add the words “environmental” and “natural” and “the ecology” and of course “green” (or add a windmill or whale or two) to your sales pitch and you’re a socially responsible, humane and Good caring outfit!

I am from NY, and as far as I recall from visiting SF, the pizza there sucked. Blondie pizza tried to approximate NY pizza, but it was a poor imitation. The rest were essentially frozen pizzas from chains. I have another theory as to why they ordered from this place. This may have been the only pizza shop owner who is still an Obama supporter. As the Obama’s rating drops more and more, such people are becoming harder to find.
Don’t worry, I’m sure he bought the Carbon Offsets…

What is sad is how true that is. The media has blown off how many “official parties” the Obama’s have done since taking office for their friends so they don’t have to pay the bill. My guess if you compared the amount in the first 100 days to the last administration it is 3 to 4 times the amount.

Best pizza I ever had was in Fowler, Indiana, a small town of about 2,000 people. The pizza place was a little hole in the wall on main street and rather run-down, but the pizza was amazing! Our daughter lived in Fowler for 7 years and every time we went down there to visit, we had to have that pizza. I don’t know what goes into making a great pizza because you can try to duplicate it exactly as they make it and somehow it doesn’t work. Our daughter doesn’t live there any more, but I would travel the 500 miles for that pizza…sad to say, the place is gone now.
Celebrity Personalities don’t pay for anything…think “Hollywood.”

You know, when Carter asked us to conserve, he not only turned down the thermostat and put on a sweater, he also parked the majority of the presidential fleet (limos especially) and seldom traveled outside the Rose Garden for a major speech or photo op. To his credit, he wanted to show empathy and not appear hypocritical in his requests for all Americans to conserve.
So why does Obama do the opposite of what he asks us to do?
Since his green plans include sacrifice and restrictive use, he should model it like Carter did; otherwise, it comes off as very hypocritical.
It turns out that Chicago produces the nation’s best Pizza, and it’s best President.
Although Carter was a HORRIBLE president, I have to give him credit…he was not a hypocrite. He had the dumbest policies EVER (until Obama, that is), but he practiced them himself too, so at least he was genuine…a genuine nutcase, but not a hypocrite. That is the nicest thing I can think of to say about that fruitcake. I think they should put on his tombstone, “He meant well”.
How does he cook the pizzas at his place. I’m assuming natural gas or wood. So he is either depleting the earths precious natural reasources or killing trees. Some “environmentally friendly” pizza place.

I agree – he was the worst president and the worst former president (his anti-Israel speeches are shameful!); but like you said, as president he wasn’t a hypocrite on the environment and conservation.

This buffoon is completely out of control. He is so NOT like any of us in his ravenous appetites and love of high living (on OUR dime), that he’s got to be the closest thing to a Lord and Master that this country has ever seen.
BO has NO idea what values made this country the great power it became. He’s been a parasite his whole live. He’s been living off of other people his entire life, and people have happily obliged his blood-sucking ways. Now he’s president, and he’s going to take everything that he can get while he can get it. Obama is a stupid frat-boy who found the pot of gold at the end of the proverbial rainbow, and he’s going to spend the whole pot as fast as he can.
If there were a single iota of wisdom in this guy, he’d show SOME restraint towards the granting of all of his many vain desires. He’d send out his pizza orders to the best local restaurant, rather than sending one out to a place 800 miles away. This story speaks volumes about how utterly vain and preposterous this man is.
All I can do is shake my head in disbelief that his ridiculous person is actually president of the United States. That this person, who didn’t even have to present any proof whatsoever of his legal and professional qualifications to BE president, who was grasped by every corner of the media as “THE ONE” we’ve been waiting for, as the most brilliant and beneficent and amongst us to lead this country, when all of the evidence is to the contrary (that Obama is actually a mindless tyrant), is utterly mortifying to me.
