UK bomb plot arrests precipitated by anti-terror chief who keeps secrets worse than Biden

By Doug Powers  •  April 11, 2009 07:40 AM

Great news: a terrorist plot to possibly bomb a night club and a shopping center in Great Britain has been thwarted.

But — the operation to arrest the suspects had to proceed earlier than planned after a British anti-terror chief’s blunder:

Twelve men have been arrested in the north west of England after Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism police officer sparked a security alert.

Assistant Commissioner Bob Quick said he “deeply regretted” revealing a secret document to photographers when he arrived for a briefing at No 10.

The document, clearly marked “secret”, carried an outline briefing on an ongoing counter-terrorism operation.

Here’s a photo via BBC News of Quick arriving for the meeting with the details of the secret operation visible to the public:

Quick has resigned because of the blunder.

Update

It occurred to me that there are some people in the United States who may not understand portions of the above story, so here’s that same news written so it will make sense to everyone in the White House and US State Department:

An Overseas Contingency Operation in London has prevented a man-caused disaster that was allegedly being planned by politically dissatisfied and possibly disenfranchised members of the global community.

The current detainees had to be taken into custody sooner than expected because a British official went all quasi Biden, so without a doubt the added haste resulted in a violation of the civil rights of one or more of the accused.

The British official was criticized and resigned even though he did nothing more than to level the playing field and break down the barrier between the haves and the have-nots.

The U.S. President was described as “relieved” after he was awakened and informed that the Queen’s iPod is safe.

Good grief! That Bob Quick must be as dumb as a box of rocks! The file is outside of it’s jacket, not in a locked brief case and on top of stack of other stuff! Oh yeah, he must be a political appointee, no signs of a professional spook there.

    Doug …

Enjoyed the “Americanization” of the British story … keep up the good work …

    Bansharia …

I am also unsure of whether of not Joe Gaffe-tastic has actually revealed or leaked any “classified” information but I don’t think that a direct parallel of the exact same act was what Doug was alluding to by comparing this British official to Joe in his version of the story …

IMHO Doug was simply pointing out the fact that Joe isn’t the only one out there with an inate propensity to stick his foot in his mouth through his words and actions …

In fact … Joe hasn’t put his foot in his mouth in years … he just opens his mouth long enough to change feet …

I too am glad that they got the accused plotters … but I suspect that having to accelerate the arrests may have done 2 things …

    1. It may have allowed other terrorists that were higher up the food chain that were involved in the financing and other aspects of the planned attacks to evade identification let alone capture … those individuals will be back …

    2. It may result in some of these suspects getting released because they may not have had sufficient amounts of evidence gathered to fully prove their guilt and involvement in court …

I saw this on the news and, except for the seriousness of it, had to laugh. ALL secret information I was ever given access to always had a cover sheet so that no one else could see it when and if I was transporting it from one place to another. Even if it was carried in a folder or buried in a briefcase it still had a cover sheet. Here this guy just openly carries it.
    It’s called operational security!

bansharia – The problem here is that people were able to read what was on that page at the very least. Imagine it was a partial list of undercover agents involved in the operation. Heck, it’s hard enough to get people to inform on the terrorists already. Do we want to make it even more difficult and dangerous?

In the US, an “anonymous source” in the State Department would have sold the document to the NY Times. No investigation would be forthcoming and the spy would continue in his job.

I still don’t get the biden blunder ref or how this is a bad thing.

Since we’re not privy to all the Brits secrets, it’s dumb to assume no harm was done, duh! Perhaps the reason old joe hasn’t revealed any US Top Secrets is because he isn’t privy to such info.

I wonder WHO or What the police had to miss by moving earlier. There usually is a reason they want to keep something “operationally secret”-national security, mistress out of town, using state funds for booze “BYOTPFB”. Bob Quick does seem to act like Biden, but looks like Bob Beckel.

    What a combination.
