James Wolcott: Beclowned

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 16, 2009 12:09 PM

Watch this. Liberal toady James Wolcott argues that since he didn’t see big Tea Party crowds on his favorite left-wing tv stations and didn’t read front-page stories about the protests in his favorite left-wing newspapers, they weren’t newsworthy and no one really turned out except at the ones Fox News covered. C-SPAN host Susan Swain then displays front page after front page of local news coverage showing thousands of Tea Party participants:

“Does that change your view?”

Wolcott: Er, no.

A classic beclowning:

By the way, the unofficial estimate of yesterday’s nationwide turnout has now surpassed 240,000.

And here’s another estimate based on newspaper accounts: At least 250,000.

I’m continuing to update the mother of all Tea Party photo collections here.

Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.

Keep this in your memory banks. The face of the Tea Party-bashing movement:

Isn’t striking fear in people also a terrorist goal?

(No, I am not saying that MoveOn.org are terrorists. I’m just questioning the notion that he believes that making people afraid is a reasonable goal.)

Typical left wing response from Mr. Wolcott. No surprise here. Liberals cannot conceive of a true grassroots movement. We are small now, but we are growing.

He does have a point in there, though. At some point this movement IS going to need more organization and more specific goals. That is what makes the collectivists so successful. They organize and then attack smaller targets. We need to do the same. It is harder for us since we value our freedom and individuality. Kind of a “herding cats” problem. Plus, we work for a living either at a business or at home with the kids. (As an at-home-dad for a long time I can tell you raising your kids IS a full time job!)

We can expect a ton of derision and criticism from the left. Great! We can learn from it.

It’s that the idea must not ever be allowed to flourish. The mere idea that there are people who are dissatisfied with Washington is dangerous. If the idea ever is allowed to germinate, more and more people will begin to wonder if there is some value in questioning Washington. And Washington, and its toadies the MSM, must squash that possibility at every turn.

Along these lines, yesterday I Googled “tea parties” to see if there was any coverage that would indicate how many people were turning out. Ranking 3rd was this article by the Vancouver Sun. Now keep in mind this was ranking 3rd in the middle of the day, way too early to declare that the turnout was “tepid.” I went to leave a comment decrying news reporting that was devoid of any real facts to support the story’s title, but my comment wouldn’t post, and then I noticed they disabled comments to the article completely (and the comments function is still disabled, nor are you able to read the comments that had made it through by the time I tried to comment…7 comments when it was disabled).

Besides the CNN clownery, in my mind this article ranked next to highest in illustrating a liberal bias in the MSM. The Sun should be ashamed…although that begs the question, can a liberal actually feel shame?

One of the problems with voting out the incumbent is that:

    1. If he/she is a Republican, you will get a Democrat that will probably be far worse.

    2. If he/she/it is a Democrat, you will probably get a Republican that still doesn’t get it.

The real question is how do we find candidates with a real chance of winning that are not Democrat or Republican.

3rd Party candidates historically have only caused the side they mostly concur with to lose therefore making their presence undesirable. See Ralph Nader and Ross Perot.

Can we have a 3rd party that won’t split the Republican party vote in half? Can we tear away enough Democratic votes that a 3rd party will split both the Republican and the Democrat party evenly?

There are many that want a 3rd party built around the abortion issue. That one issue is probably not enough to win an election. There are also many Democrats (mostly women) that would never vote for a pro life candidate because they want their choice to have an abortion preserved. They will however, vote for an anti tax candidate.

How do we co-opt the Republican candidate or create a 3rd party candidate that will stand for low taxes and less government while overcoming the Democratic opposition to pro life to get Democrats to cross over?

    Maybe 4 parties.

Democrat- take from the rich and give to the poor, big government, pro abortion

Republican- pro-life, fair taxes, big government

Conservative- pro-life, low taxes, small government

Reservicrat- low taxes, small goverment, pro-choice

Who and how many would vote in each category?

The predictable media pattern is playing out exactly according to script:

    1. Give the protests the “Cone of Silence” treatment;

    2. If the protests *must* be covered, do so in a combative and dismissive fashion; and

    3. Afterward, claim that things like “tepid turnouts” and a “lack of passion” and the fact that only the FNC treated the protests as a serious news event mean that the movement itself has been “discredited.”

This is largely the same playbook they used against the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. And the only reason it didn’t work in the end was because the Swifties themselves managed to find a way around the media blockade.

The Tea Party protesters will need to do the same, but not just for an election cycle. This is a war for the soul of the country, and it’s going to be waged over decades against a determined, desperate and vicious opposition.

Yes that can and sometimes will happen. The primary first and then we shall see. But voting for the evil of two lessers has caused us to lose too much. If any are to remain Republican we have to clear out the RINOs.

I have been a registered Republican since my 21st birthday: can I stay, will I? I really am having my doubts. Above all else I hate cowards, weaklings and traitors. I can deal with an enemy-I won’t even try to deal with a traitor.

But what do I know? After all I am a veteran, Christian-pro life, gun owner Right Wing Extremist thank you ;)

To me, the Tea Parties getting ANY coverage at all made them successful. Those in America who thought they were alone now know that there are others of us out there! This is the beginning of an effort to hold all politicians accountable and to fire those who refuse to operate honestly and fairly.

I think for the next Tea Party, it’s time to put a face forward to lead — not necessarily rally behind — the movement. It’s time to drop any assertions that the Tea Parties weren’t mostly ideologically driven because the MSM and libs sure as hell have already pegged it so, so be damned and let’s call the reason and passion which fuels the Tea Party like it is! I’m not any hard-core Palin fan (F. Thompson, where ARE you??), but she does strike a chord with the frustrations and outrage that the MSM fears. I know she’s tired, but she’d be doing a service by acting as a “hostess of the movement” to start integrating all this emotion and drive into a force which could be aptly directly a later time.

This “third party” idea is not going to pan out, folks. You can bet your last dollar that the Paulbots will make a run at this, as they tried to turn a few Tea Parties yesterday into “Ron Paul for President” shout-outs. Paul will never get the conservative base, as much as I agree with him on a few Constitutional issues, such as dumping the 16th and 17th amendments. Paul is a libertarian – not a conservative.

I disagree. Palin, admirable though she may be, was willing to subordinate herself to John McCain, and if you were making a list of those who personify the problems with Washington McCain would have to be near the top. That makes her a poor spokesperson for this movement.
