Video: Janet Napolitano’s Extremist Makeover tour
Janet Napolitano made the media rounds this morning to face the public firestorm over DHS’s hit job on conservatives.
I’m calling it the Extremist Makeover tour.
She offered an apology to veterans, saying it wasn’t her intention to offend. It may not have been the intention of the report authors or Napolitano to offend or overreach, but that was certainly the effect. And it remains a mystery why Napolitano felt it necessary to distribute a shoddy nine-page report that was supposedly in the works under the Bush administration for a year, as Napolitano claims, containing zero data backing up the claim of a “resurgence” of rightwing extremist violence — and was padded with analysis from the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center to stir fear of “disgruntled military veterans.”
On Fox and Friends this morning, Napolitano admitted that she would have changed the definition included in the report.
A reminder:
Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.
So, how exactly would she rewrite the definition?
We rightwing extremists want to know.

I still find it too big a stretch to consider that the Bush ad is responsible for the DHS report – as written – and is just not something I feel they would put forth. They may have provided a skeletal framework for the report, but its characterizations and time sensitivity suggest the imprint of Napolitano and the Obama administration. After all, they did take ownership by signing off on it.

I posted this on another thread.
Her defense was what I would call a diversion…she predictably brought up Tim McVeigh (14 years ago, is that her most recent example…what about the stats that say that vets are LESS likely to commit suicide, for example, than the general pop?). Anyway, when questioned about whether the definition of right-wing extremist would include Catholics who are pro-life, she tried to downplay the question. Then she mentioned an example of “left-wing” extremists, such as “animal rights” groups, followed by a statement that DHS’ job is to “fight terror in our homeland.” I would have loved for F&F to follow up with a question such as, “Why then does the report focus on “right-wing” extremists? Why are the only examples of extremists cited in the report “those who feel strongly against abortion or immigration”? (Side note: “Immigration” is a legal act…aliens are those who enter this country illegally. There is NO SUCH THING AS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.)
Why doesn’t the report mention “extremists” in the environmental movement (responsible for damaging property, starting fires, and causing human injury and death?), or perhaps the Code Pinkos, or ELF?
She can blame Bush all she wants. It was HER decision to release it. There’s no passing the buck on this one. She owns it.

I had laid low and refrained form commenting from this issue until I heard Napolitano. Now that I have I am more incensed then ever. She did not apologize, she danced around the issue. Listen closely to how she answers Eric Bolling’s question.

Saw the interview on FNC this morning. She looked from the outset like she could barely keep from spitting on the camera at Fox. The sheer venom on her face was almost palpable. Her intolerance was showing badly.

Also regarding the NSA overstepping its bounds. Do you realize that if EVERYONE puts incendiary non-specific pseudo-random words or phrases into their conversations or emails, that even if the NSA computers extract those messages for future analysis – that it still takes a physical ANALYST to make the final determination on threat/risk level?

Then she goes on to defend the report and the assessment about veterans. When Eric Bolling specifically asked her if she consider Veterans any more of a risk then anyone else, instead of answering the question she says she has to talk differently to the media then with the military.
She then says that the footnote on page 2 is the one thing she would remove, which means she is okay with leaving in the Veteran part.
MtsEdge: Read the definition closer. To enter and settle in a country or region to which one is not native. It doesn’t say visit.
It is possible to illegally enter a country or region to which one is not native. Thus, it is possible to be an illegal immigrant.
Let’s not parse words and usurp their meaning to legitimize your stance.

Let me guess what prompted that ridiculous report about “right wing terrorists” Janet. Although there is truth to the report being politically motivated against conservatives, I am thinking there was another factor. PC!!! CAIR probably whined to obummer and the gov’t about profiling. The gov’t said it was not (which it isn’t because virtually all terrorist acts this century were performed by muslims), but of course denial has no effect on special interest groups as PC is their shield. So DHS tried to prove they are not “racists” by accusing a predominantly white group, conservatives, of being terrorists and issung a bulletin as such to law enforcement agencies around the country. Of course they use Mcveigh as the poster child of conservatives to smear all conservatives. They took the huge exception (.001% of all the horriffic terrorist acts around the world over the past 20 years have been done by whites) and held it up as the rule. If I tried that against a minority group, I would be labeled a racist and spurned. This one way street is getting really old. And what a monumental waste of resources focusing on 1 or 2 rogues in a group rather than groups with milllions of so called “rogues” who have proven their desire to commit such acts(ie muslims). And yes I am advocating profiling. Bang for buck you know.

The current regime of criminals running the country oppose immigration (the legitimate legal process) because they advocate dissolution of our borders. Our elected officials and their appointments actually encourage disobedience to the Constitution, thereby making them oath breakers and subject to prosecution for treason. What was interesting on FOx was she was asked the following question, “Do you think that the veterans today are more prone to extremist violence that veterans in the past.”
She effectively DUCKED the question. Go back and look at it. I have not seen the link above, but saw it live.
She did NOTHING to change my opinion that this report is a piece of worthless junk that law enforcement will ignore. It is too broad to have any real use in the field.
Does anyone think that Janet “Little Napoleon” is qualified to be Director of Homeland Security? I think she is a figurehead with little input or power to do anything substantial. The appointment of a new “Border Czar” should be proof enough of that. The thought of terrorists fearing Napolitano is laughable.

Nothing less than a resignation from Napolitano will suffice, and if that is so hard to do then Obama should considering retiring in her place.
You are missing the entire point though. The idea is not to change the LE perception all at once. The idea is to instigate a subtle nuance using semantics in much the same way as has been done by calling our nation a “democracy” instead of a constitutional republic, calling illegal aliens “immigrants” and thus, to allow for a creeping change to begin that will only become effective over the course of time.
Interestingly enough, for people with an in-depth view of history (or those like me who simply have no real social life LOL) Ben Franklin also used this method very effectively to influence people’s thinking and decisions. Marx, Stalin, Pol Pot, Hitler, liberals and others, simply use(d) this method for more nefarious purposes.
As for the length (or lack thereof) of this report, it is actually an analysis of the report in order to give a summary of the completed report itself. Many departmental heads of large organizations need to have everything summarized in order to have a better view of what is going on overall. It certainly does pose some interesting questions about what is in the complete (and fully classified) report.

I downloaded this thing….it is not unreasonable to see this as setting up the legal framework for the killing of those who would protest this administration. We were a very peacefull group of citizens concerned about our God given rights and we are being set up as a “Perceived Threat So it seems the question is Should DHS protect an administration or protect the United States of America
