More speech-stiflers at UNC-Chapel Hill Updated
No, they haven’t learned.
And yes, it is time for UNC-Chapel Hill administrators to turn the mirror on themselves and ask how they fostered this pathetic climate of intolerance. After driving Tom Tancredo off campus, student mobsters again attempted to shut down a pro-immigration enforcement advocate, Rep. Virgil Goode. He was to speak on the suppression of free speech in the immigration debate, and also try to finish Tancredo’s talk on illegal immigration and the DREAM Act that was stifled by window-smashing, tantrum-throwing student thugs.
Goode prevailed, but not before six disruptors were arrested and the audience was subjected to profanity. Via the Daily Tarheel:
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill police arrested six people tonight (April 22) on charges of disorderly conduct during an appearance by Virgil Goode, a former Virginia Congressman, sponsored by an officially recognized student group, Youth for Western Civilization.
Goode spoke to a Frank Porter Graham Student Union audience of about 150 people and took questions from audience members for about 90 minutes. Some audience members jeered and heckled when the speech started. One small group walked out shortly after it began. Some set off personal body alarms that had to be located and turned off by police. Two others unfurled a banner with a profane statement. Goode continued speaking throughout.
Winston Crisp, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, warned the audience a few minutes into the speech that disruptive behavior would not be tolerated. Officers began taking protesters out one or two at a time during the course of the event as the behavior escalated. Police reported no violence or vandalism.
Chancellor Holden Thorp issued the following statement:
“The speaker tonight was able to express his views and have a give-and-take with his audience. I regret that six protesters had to be arrested, but they gave us no choice. They ignored our warnings, and their disruptive behavior was completely at odds with what we expect at Carolina. I want everyone to know that these six people do not represent what Carolina stands for when it comes to freedom of expression.”

I should think that Chancellor Thorp would express regret that Rep. Goode was subjected to such shenanigans.
Here are some legal questions. Let’s say a Tom Tancredo accepts an invitation by UNC to address a forum on border control. He gets hit by an object thrown by one of these student-thugs injuring him seriously. How liable is UNC and to who?
Isn’t UNC responsible for guaranteeing the safety of invited guests? Couldn’t Tancredo sue UNC? What would be the charges? Are there other parties in attendance who could also sue? Even without being injured, couldn’t Tancredo sue?
Maybe folks would at least listen to a liberal argument if their spokesfolks weren’t such obvious d-bags?
The irony is that a few years back when Goode was a Democrat the lefties begged him to stay in the party. He lost the last election because of money flowing into Virginia from New York and San Francisco…any ideas about who lives in those places?
This is just the beginning of the thuggery to come.

I’ve lived in western NC for about 6 years. I’ve never been anywhere near Chapel Hill and plan to keep it that way.
Like almost all other states, NC is rapidly sinking like a rock as the state and all the local governments are running huge deficits. NC is one of the states that isn’t paying state income tax refunds because they don’t have the dough. Yep, Raleigh can hold taxed money that is rightfully ours, but woe unto him who is 15 minutes late paying his tax to Raleigh.
With all the cutbacks, how long will it be before the UNC system starts folding? Then maybe Bullhorn Boy can go out and get a real job. Maybe one of those shovel-ready jobs BO has been yammering on about. Personally, I wouldn’t bet on the guy being able to cut it. He doesn’t look (or sound) like he’s done an honest day’s work in his life.

I’m not worried about any students entering the real world. The real world has a way of gobsmacking them into responsibility. My concern is about those who stay behind in their fenced off campus.

These bozos would have their day in court. During the proceedings, every time they are requested to answer the judge, an airhorn would be sounded just inches from the defendents’ ears (their lawyers may share).
Not being able to answer the judge’s inquiries, the judge would then increase their sentences due to contempt of court charges. Any protests would be met with the same loud air horn. This should continue in their cells for the duration of the sentence.
This may help them learn the important lesson that the perps’ opinions are not as valued by society as the originators think.

Now every single one of these protesters should be expelled/dismissed from UNC-Chapel Hill and any other university or college where they, or others like them, engage in such an egregious abuse of another’s First Amendment rights.

The principles of democracy and civil discourse are lost on these creatures. This is not freedom of speach. This is rule by the loud and the rude. In freedom of speach there is a right for all to express thier views, not just those we agree with. If UNC would let the protesters have thier say to rebut Tancredo when he is done, and they would do so,that is more in line with the framer’s intent. I’m sure these kids are mostly pretty intelligent. However, they remain willfully ignorant and undisciplined in their education and personal growth. They are, in effect, unteachable. When they are never corrected or refuse correction, they tend to remain stuck in an emotional and intellectual cull de sac (sp?).
When Brian posted at Hot Air, he wondered why I hated Chapel Hill so much. It should be self evident now. Although, speaking out against Chapel Hill is a bigger business death than speaking out against gay marriage I assure you. I’ve been threatened boycotts for criticisms of their basketball team much worse than the gay community could do.
So long as the police DO THEIR JOB, there is no need for me to render civil disobedience with my two loaded fists to defend free speech.
I hate to ‘lower myself to their level’, but reasoning with them is out of the question. They WANT socialism. They think being rich or striving to be rich is a sin. They expect everyone’s money and property is their money and property. If you disagree with them, you are worse than Hitler.
I’m all for civil discourse, but how long is this going to have to go on before ya’ll realize reasoning with these people with logic isn’t going to happen. The indoctrination they get in public schools is too much to overcome. We need to bring back the paddle in gradeschool to show that actions have consequences. Spare the rod, spoil the child.
This person is standing in a place called ‘the Pit’ at Chapel Hill. That is the very place that an Iranian born student plowed down 9 UNC students with his Jeep in 2006 to ‘avenge Muslims around the world’.
People who supress free speech on either side are as big a threat to our freedom as Osama Bin Laden. They should be dealt with accordingly.
P.S. Having seen this too often, if you rounded up all of the disruptors and checked them out, you would find that 80% of them are not registered students. Also, at leat 1/3 of them will be children of faculty memebers.
I live in Mr. Goode’s former district. I always voted for him with enthusiasm. His loss last year was another “The republican won by a narrow margin – democrat demands recount – democrat “finds” just enough votes to win” scenarios.
I’ll wait until it’s proven otherwise.

I agree with your mainpoint that people that supress free speech are a threat equal to OBL, but wonder where do you get the 80% and 1/3 stat from?
I wonder if a better guage would be to check out the syllabus of various university departments and see where the ideologies lead too.
Based on my college experience at the University of Memphis (as well as 4 community colleges), my theory is that 80-85% of the English, Psychology, Sociology, Women’s study and African-American study departments lean left to far left in academia.
For parents that are considering sending your kids to college, spend sometime walking the school buildings and checkout what the professors hang up outside their doors. This will give you a good picture of what type of material and perspective your son/daughter is going be learning.
Another good source is Ratemyprofessor.com and I frequently check it out before registering for my classes to get a feel of what other students are saying about a particular instructor.

That was my personal experience during my university days. We had on campus troubles and we ROTC students were frequently targets of demonstrations. What we observed was that the demonstrators consisted primarily of the non-students, who hung around campus, espcially the Student Union, and people too young to be there.
We were flabbergasted as to why the campus police had to stand there and do nothing. A fellow cadet, who grew up in the town where the university was, started pointing out various HS and college age kids, who were the children of fauculty members. One of the protest ring leaders was the son of the Dean of Students.
Thus, “daddy” was protecting his little boy and his hoodlum friends. As a result, since my graduation, I have donated nary a penny to that school.
Amen brother. I never met a psych/sociology/womens or african american studies major I could stand. The PC oozed from these guys (I have a step sister that is a sociology grad and I dred seeing her at holidays). Especially the affirmative action majors which add no, zero/nada, value to society at large. AA studies such as those exist only in a prosperous society, which was built by the capitalists they so despise. There is no demand for women’s studies in a society that barely meets the basic needs of food and shelter for it’s citizens.

Reminds me of a story about Reagan. He was giving a speach at some college in the 60’s and afterwards he came across some protestors chanting,”Make love, not war.” Reagan turned to the man with him and said, “You know, I can tell by looking at them they aren’t very good at either.”
I’ve been reading everything going on at UNC, and I’m just sick. My daughter recently made the decision to go there in the fall. I keep hearing people say, “who would send their children to a school like that?” – well I’m not sending her anywhere, it’s her decision. Her dad and I have worked very hard her whole life to instill traditional values, and she seems so far to embrace them. I only pray she keeps her brains when she gets there…
I think these kids didn’t necessarily come from liberal backgrounds, but lenient and apathetic backgrounds. Their parents probably had little to do with actually raising them – the TV and public schools took care of that.

Clearly, the lefties on campus are rightfully afraid that the words of speakers like Tancredo are particularly transformative, and would resonate with anyone that hears them. Thus, they must prevent that from happening.
That is what truth and facts will do, and the lefties clearly have to drown this out with childish antics, as they have no sane or logical retort.
