John Kerry, Catholicism and abortion: Courage of somebody else’s convictions

By Doug Powers  •  April 24, 2009 07:00 AM

The U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican position remains open, but even “pro-choice Catholic” John Kerry seems certain that a pro-life candidate is a necessity for that post.

From the USA Today:

In other comments, Kerry said:

• He did not recommend Caroline Kennedy to be U.S. ambassador to the Vatican. Kerry believes an abortion-rights supporter should not be in that post, to avoid offending the Holy See.

“I made no such recommendation,” he said, refuting Italian news media reports. “I think that if you’re going to have an ambassador who has access to His Holiness … it is best not to make things difficult from the outset.”

So Sen. Kerry is willing to commit to Catholic pro-life standards on a targeted, temporary and political basis to avoid offending the Vatican, but not as a life-long Christian conviction to avoid offending Jesus Christ? Now all we have to do is convince Kerry that the unborn are perpetually up for a Vatican ambassadorship.

For Kerry’s sake, I hope that “I was for legal abortion, before I was against it briefly, before I was for it again” is an acceptible explanation at the entrance to the Pearly Gates.

From the outset? How about never making things difficult?

A local talkshow host asked yesterday just which world leader (read: totalitarian dictator-tyrant) WON’T Obama greet heartily, bow to, or smile with?

In Obama’s world, Chavez, Castro, Ahmadinejad and Il are all people we need to “dialogue” with. What’s the over-under he shows no such compassion or consideration for the Holy Father and the Vatican.

“From the outset”…how long before things for pro-life Catholics in this nation get really difficult?

Oh, wait…that’s right. The Pope is the leader of one of the world’s largest right-wing extremist groups.

Kerry, Kennedy and Pelosi arrived at their Catholic pro-choice position by listening to the late former Congressman-Catholic priest Robert Drinan. Kerry served as his campaign manager in 1970. The pope ordered Drinan not to run for Congress after 10 years:

In 1980, Pope John Paul II ordered Father Drinan to either forgo reelection or leave the priesthood. With “regret and pain,” Father Drinan announced he would not seek re election.

But everything is OK now–Barney Frank took his place.

Not just politicians, but also Hollyweird and a few main-line denominations that have been losing membership. They’ve been trying to redefine Christianity for a very long time, instead of dealing with sin.

Why is it that pro-life organizations don’t make more of this with the Catholic church? Seems to me as a lot Catholic Priest and Catholic “movement” are very much anti-conservative. Yet no one seems to make any progress is pointing out to US Catholics that the Democrats and Catholic convictions on serious matters do not jive. Are Catholics pro-gay marriage, pro-abortion, etc.?

I also have the same unanswered questions about the Jewish community in the US. Why does it in general support Democrats who are notoriously anti-Israel and pro-Arab in the middle east?

    I just don’t get it.

Why is there even a discussion between the US Catholic Church and the Left that for all practical purposes feels like a negotiation on this core issue of pro-life vs. pro-abortion?

So if the Catholic Church can get leniency on illegal immigration they’ll cut the Left some slack on abortion? Is that the US Catholic church’s position?

I understand your point but that is bad theology. Our names aren’t in the Book of Life because of our behavior and our names don’t stay there because of our behavior. Our names are in there and stay in there because of the behavior of another. That “other” is Jesus Christ and He paid the penalty in full and his resurrection while proving many things one of the things is demonstrates is that His payment was accepted as being in full.

The only way my name would disappear from the Book of Life once accepting Christ’s payment is that Christ’s payment would suddenly no longer be satisfactory. It will always be satisfactory.

Don’t let your frustration with the Left drive you to a theology that reduces the size and extent of the price Christ paid and that payment’s application and permanence.

    Nancy Pelosi & The Pope
    Bringing Joy to the Multitudes

The Pope and Nancy Pelosi are on the same stage in front of a huge crowd. The speaker and His Holiness, however, have seen it all before. To make it a little more interesting, the speaker says to the Pope, “Did You know that with just one little wave of my hand I can make every Democrat in the crowd go wild?”

He doubts it, so she shows him. Sure enough, the wave elicits rapture and cheering from every democrat in the crowd. Gradually, the cheering subsides.

The Pope, not wanting to be outdone by such a level of arrogance, considers what he could do. “That was impressive, the Pope says, “But did you know that with just one little wave of MY hand I can make EVERY person in the crowd go crazy with joy? This joy will not be a momentary display like that of your subjects, but will go deep into their hearts, and they will forever speak of this day and rejoice.”

The speaker seriously doubts this, and says so. “One little wave of your hand and all people will rejoice forever? Show me.”

    He slapped her.
