If you need to lose 50 IQ points quickly…

…just read this stupidity-inducing analysis of Barack Obama’s “hipness.”

Also works well as an emergency emetic.

ALBANY — What up, my Obama?

In the hallways of Albany High School, that is the new hello.

If you sneeze, your friends at Albany High might say “Barack you.” Goofing off in the hallway? “Barack’s in the White House now” means cool it.

Presidents usually don’t earn a blip on the radar of teenage American hipness. But Barack Obama’s rise to the White House already has changed the way young people talk to one another. Creatively riffing on the unusual name — Baracking — is a natural progression of Obama’s prominent spot in pop culture.

Along with simple phonetics, it’s symbolic of young people’s admiration, said Deborah Tannen, a linguistics professor at Georgetown University.

“It sounds like they are transferring their positive feelings about the person to new contexts,” she said.

    Politico, 4/24/09:

It’s so hip that school kids in Albany, N.Y., coined a term for it: “Baracking.” And it doesn’t stop there. Those in the know at Albany High greet each other by saying: “What’s up, my Obama?” and they respond to a sneeze with “Barack you.” Misbehavior is peer-corrected with the admonition, “Barack’s in the White House,” which translates, “Show some respect.”

Deborah Tannen, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University, said it was “just really stunning” that kids were co-opting the president’s name as a term of endearment and identification.

“This is the most emblematic, positive thing that kids could say,” she said. “It’s connecting them to him, saying that there’s something special in the connection between them.”

What a barack. (How stunning is it that I creatively riffed on the unusual name?)

For a brief period in the 1970s and 1980s, one might argue that Washington’s eternal pol Marion Barry was hip; that was before drugs, booze and women brought him low. To be sure, the track record for hip politicians isn’t promising. History suggests that the power of personality has limitations in politics. It sours under public scrutiny. So can it last? Can Obama’s hipness survive the weight and responsibility of the office? Maybe there’s a reason presidents aren’t hip.

The Left Wing Media (not MSM) and our entertainment industry cram good looking EMPTY SUIT people down our throats constantly as examples of “really bright” people. No real measure of these person’s accomplishments is needed. Don’t confuse us with facts.
    ***
The LWM put out a lot of stories about the first President Bush being a wimp–despite his having 4 aircraft shot out from underneath him in WW2.
    ***
This was despite seeing the film shot from the submarine that picked him up out of the water a few hundred yards from the island beach. The water spouts created by Japanese bullets were all around the tall thin skinny pilot as the Navy fished him out of the water.
    ***
Then compare the LWM treatment of Condi Rice and the brilliant Hillary Clinton. Or the second President Bush and President Obama (PBUH). No facts needed here either.

O.K. I just got back from the hospital visiting our new grandson…Connor, 7 lb. 13 oz. 21 inches long. He is a keeper!!

I just read all the comments. Also read the comments on the other thread referred to in the above post by Pasadea Phil. I hate to nose in here, but…SURPRISE!…I’m going to anyway. Everyone else is ignoring this, and maybe that is the best tact. But I am really worried about some of us, who basically AGREE with each other, doing some infighting. I have had issues with a couple people here on occasion and I am trying to steer away from commenting to them. We have enough on our plates trying to deal with the libtards without fighting amongst ourselves. All of us will have disagreements at some time or other. We are not all clones of each other…there are a lot of strong opinions and that is a good thing! Why resort to name-calling over inconsequentials like who is a RINO and who isn’t, etc.? Let’s reserve our nasty comments for the REAL trolls and not accuse each other of being those horrible creatures who sleep under rocks. That is just plain mean and the only thing it does is split us up. We can’t let that happen. If someone has a differing opinion, but we KNOW that person is NOT a troll, can we please not resort to that word? PP called me that once a few months ago, for absolutely no reason, and it really hurt. We all know who the trolls are, and they ain’t us! We can argue all we want, but let’s leave the name-calling to the ones who really deserve it, like lgm or ilmc, or huggypoo. Just my opinion.

    OK, mom…

Look, it’s just that I find it VERY odd when you have a guy like PP who sounds like he believes the same things I do, has the same insights, and concludes stuff that I think is just delusional.

I have to call people on that when I see it.

Like, on the pirate threads, he was talking about how the pirates had been rebuked (?!?!?), and their government would now cooperate in arresting them (!?!?!?) and agree (?!?!?) to allow us to destroy their bases.

That stuff made me wonder initially if he was not a subtle troll, but I’m convinced he’s not. (Subtle or a troll.) He’s just incredibly inconsistent.

I’m also convinced he has some screws loose, though. Which is not his fault, and I may be bearing down on him too hard.

Rags…I have enjoyed most of PP’s posts. He does have some very good points, and I have complimented him when he is spot on. But I have also seen the other side of him and I don’t know what to make of it. I said a very mild, innocent thing about Michael Steele…way back when he was first selected as GOP Chair. I always liked Michael Steele. And when PP criticized him as a RINO, I just asked, in all honesty, what was RINO about Steele? Well, I got an earful, not about Michael Steele, but about how I was a troll and should go back to Kos where I belonged. Others on the thread defended me and told PP he was out of ine. Then, I later referred to it and PP had no idea what I was talking about. Kind of like Pelosi…selective amnesia. Since then, I have tried to forget it. But it was very troubling at the time!

I understand. I’ve wondered if he was a bright kid, given some of the gaping holes in his understanding and knowledge.

I think it was him who was asserting the other day that the Constitution explicitly stated it was an act of war to secede. Of course, that wouldn’t have flown past first base with the Founders, who were all there representing sovereign states, and didn’t have any assurance that the Constitution was going to work any better than the Articles of Confederation had.

On the other hand, he said something the other day about holding a license…trade or professional, don’t know…which would mean he could never join a tax boycott. So, if true, he’s an adult.

What he said today about the flu being clustered in Mexicans of European blood was just racist…and bizarre. I know Mexico a bit, and you won’t find many people who aren’t hybridized pretty completely. I know some red-headed, blue-eyed Mexicans…descended from Irish-American soldiers, but they are damn few and far between.

Wealth in Mexico is hardly centered in one ethnic group, either, and I’ve had workers from Mexico who were very Spanish. I’ve had others who were Chino, or looked like Chinese. I mean, damn…

Well, I guess we just need to accept each other as we are…some are perfect (like us) and others, not so much! Ha! It is important to have differing opinions. That is why I really hate it when someone goes off on one of us who is of like-mind, but just disagrees here and there. It is o.k. to disagree! I was wrong about Michael Steele. I thought he was a conservative and it turns out, he is a RINO. But at the time I asked PP the question, I didn’t know enough about Steele to make that assessment. I just asked the question and got blasted. We all need to take a step back and respect each other’s opinions. And we also need to feel free to express ours…as I do frequently. Hard to shut me up sometimes, but anyone who wants to skip over my posts is welcome to do so.

Bruce, I agree with you. No one really knows how smart he is; he has never released his grades. How could he afford Harvard being raised by a single mom. . .he admits to taking drugs so where did the money come from? Maybe all he had to say was ‘present’ and leave for the day. Where is the birth certificate? The only good thing he has done so far is going after the banks and the credit card fees they charge!
