‘I feel the need, the need to freak out New Yorkers!’ — Update: Wouldn’t ‘Photoshop’ have been cheaper?

By Doug Powers  •  April 27, 2009 03:37 PM

The Obama administration is doing their best to keep New Yorkers on their toes:

An Air Force fighter jet and one of President Barack Obama’s official planes on Monday flew low over the Statue of Liberty in an approved photo opportunity that startled some New Yorkers who have memories of the September 11 attacks.

New York City officials notified some businesses but not all city agencies or the general public. People in New York remain sensitive to such incidents in lower Manhattan, site of the 2001 attacks involving hijacked airliners that destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Many people left their buildings, and stock prices extended losses at the time.

The U.S. Air Force, which operates the president’s plane, said the “aerial photo mission” involved an F-16 fighter jet escort and one of the Boeing 747s designated as Air Force One when the president is aboard. Obama was not on board.

Police said federal authorities told them not to disclose the information ahead of time but to direct inquiries to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Mayor Bloomberg is reported to be “furious” — either because most people weren’t informed of the fly-by, or that he found out the plane was carrying foods loaded with trans fats.

Look for Obama’s people to claim it was a selfless gesture on the part of the president to take New Yorkers minds off the swine flu.

Click the pic below to watch the CBS 2 story on the ill-timed buzz of Lady Liberty:

As for the environmental impact of this photo-op, we’ll have to consult the “carbon footprint calculator” — though it can’t be nearly as bad as “Hurricane Latrina” that blew through DC on Inauguration Day.

What’s going to be the next Obama administration photo op? My money is on lighting firecrackers next to a group of napping D-Day veterans.

Update:

An administration official says a presidential Boeing 747 and a fighter jet flew low near ground zero in New York City Monday because the White House Military Office wanted to update its file photo of the president’s plane near the Statue of Liberty.

Seems to me that a little thing called “Photoshop” could have saved a ton of fuel, not to mention spared a few nerves.

The White House has apologized, and this report says Obama was also “furious” — and this is a president who sat through an anti-American diatribe by Daniel Ortega without batting an eye.

Normally I’d agree, but you can bet that most new yorkers wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a VC-25A and a regular 747, especially at a distance. When the first eyewitness accounts were being released early on 9/11, they were referring to a 767′s as everything but. Add to it the fact that it was being trailed by a fighter escort and I don’t begrudge the typical New Yorker some anxiety over the display.

I would assume it takes a world of paperwork and filings for ‘one’ of the Air Force Ones to get off the ground, much less enter airspace in New York City and loop around the Statue of Liberty. Somebody, somewhere, is going to find themselves under than infamous bus if those orders didn’t come from the WH. If they did, it’ll all be forgotton under the blanket of another media made catastrophe.

Trouble is with alcohol, you have to face life unchanged in the morning, unfortunately, with a headache. Such side-effect would never be approved by the FDA. Now, a good single blend Scotch….

I’ve never had a hang-over. I don’t drink to drunkenness. Just to what the Irish call, “Having drink taken”. Completely different… A slightly altered state, to be sure…

Laphroaig is my favorite Scotch…it is the FULL-TILT product of Islay, one of the Scots isles. It will make you hear bagpipes.

Really a boneheaded move that shows a lack of maturity

53%of Americans voted for that immature bonehead. Some even voted multiple times for that immature bonehead. Boneheads in New York voted for that immature bonehead in record numbers. The Bonehead in Chief gave them a flyover out of respect for their support.

    Any questions?

Nope just an Executive Order from the Bonehead in Chief. Get used to it.

I do not think this was one bit funny. I was at work on Sept. 11 and we had the radio on when the twin towers were hit. I was crying so hard I could hardly stand. If this bho did this on purpose, I might suggest he get some medical help! If you think bho didn’t know, nothing gets done without his or mo ok.

That’s too funny. And racist. A black president’s plane “spooks” NYC!

So, it looked to me after viewing the film that it was a hazy day. So the majority of folks in Manhattan couldn’t spot air force One through the haze. Seems like maybe DY’s son should cut them some slack. After all, not everyone can be as perfect as sonofdy and Obama.

I think you’re spot on with the assessment that someone did approve this thing, but with the attention it’s getting we’ll never hear the mea culpa.

I was 2500 miles away from New York on 9/11 and I still get the willies seeing planes where they shouldn’t be. You are correct, this was not funny and potentially very damaging mentally to those either working or living close to ground zero. I can’t believe no one that approved this didn’t give it a second thought. That in itself is the scary part.

Could it have been to much to ask that this adminstration (or who ever) scheduled this photo op to spend 5 minutes writing a press release and sending it to all the tv and radio stations in NY?

However, I am glad to see New Yorkers with a healthy dose of concern like the passengers who complained about the imans in Minnesota a few years ago.

I’m not trying to defend anyone, but let’s look at a reason to not make this public ahead of time.
The Air Force is not in the habit of posting flight schedules of VC-25s. Public notice of this flight could have alerted a terrorist group of the exact whereabouts of a VC-25.
Could you imagine a Al Qaeda sleeper cell in NYC and the publicity of blowing the “other Air Force One” out of the sky?
I imagine that was part of the equation in not making this public.
