‘I feel the need, the need to freak out New Yorkers!’ — Update: Wouldn’t ‘Photoshop’ have been cheaper?
The Obama administration is doing their best to keep New Yorkers on their toes:
An Air Force fighter jet and one of President Barack Obama’s official planes on Monday flew low over the Statue of Liberty in an approved photo opportunity that startled some New Yorkers who have memories of the September 11 attacks.
New York City officials notified some businesses but not all city agencies or the general public. People in New York remain sensitive to such incidents in lower Manhattan, site of the 2001 attacks involving hijacked airliners that destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
Many people left their buildings, and stock prices extended losses at the time.
The U.S. Air Force, which operates the president’s plane, said the “aerial photo mission” involved an F-16 fighter jet escort and one of the Boeing 747s designated as Air Force One when the president is aboard. Obama was not on board.
Police said federal authorities told them not to disclose the information ahead of time but to direct inquiries to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Mayor Bloomberg is reported to be “furious” — either because most people weren’t informed of the fly-by, or that he found out the plane was carrying foods loaded with trans fats.
Look for Obama’s people to claim it was a selfless gesture on the part of the president to take New Yorkers minds off the swine flu.
Click the pic below to watch the CBS 2 story on the ill-timed buzz of Lady Liberty:
As for the environmental impact of this photo-op, we’ll have to consult the “carbon footprint calculator” — though it can’t be nearly as bad as “Hurricane Latrina” that blew through DC on Inauguration Day.
What’s going to be the next Obama administration photo op? My money is on lighting firecrackers next to a group of napping D-Day veterans.
An administration official says a presidential Boeing 747 and a fighter jet flew low near ground zero in New York City Monday because the White House Military Office wanted to update its file photo of the president’s plane near the Statue of Liberty.
Seems to me that a little thing called “Photoshop” could have saved a ton of fuel, not to mention spared a few nerves.
The White House has apologized, and this report says Obama was also “furious” — and this is a president who sat through an anti-American diatribe by Daniel Ortega without batting an eye.

Harvard grads at work…
Gonna be a looong 4 years.
THANK YOU DOUG!!!!!
I have been steaming about this all day.
DUUUUUH ONE strikes again!
Are we in for 3 1/2 more years of this idiocy!?!?
My memory is a bit fuzzy…what was that about 9/11?
Well, it is a blue state…
Photo Op? This guy is some sick freak to scare so many people…after 9/11, they didn’t see that coming? Sick, just ugly sick!
Does Obama think being president is like being head of a college fraternity or something? His administration is well into becoming a farce starring Eddie Murphy.
2 things.
1/ New Yorkers are easily freaked out. Every single aircraft had USAF or USA written all over them.
2/ The obama team should have known this would happen given what happened there on awww i don’t know, 9/11/2001…
Don’t blame Zero for things that happened when he was a child ! Geez, how many times does he have to tell you !?
3/ New Yorkers believe that 1/ perpetrated 2/.
advertisementIceman: You two really are cowboys.
Maverick: What’s your problem, Kazanski?
Iceman: You’re everyone’s problem. That’s because every time you go up in the air, you’re unsafe. I don’t like you because you’re dangerous.
Maverick: That’s right! Ice… man. I am dangerous.
I’m seriously starting to think Frank Fleming is on to something here. Either we elected Borat or America’s been Punk’d.
Dagney,
I have a growing inkling this was done as some stunt for some hollywoodistan movie. Oh hey Barry remember me and all the $ I donated? we need a scene with airforce one flying over NYC, yes monday would be fine thank you. Whoever it was SCREW you and this nutcase obambi admin.
P.S. Doug and MM no I dont need a hattip
thank you for FINALLY get this posted.
Man, we haven’t a president this deluded since when the Oval Office was occupied by a man who thought he was a jelly doughnut.
Personaly I blame the obstructionist republicans in congress.
obama mode off…
Normally I’d agree, but you can bet that most new yorkers wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a VC-25A and a regular 747, especially at a distance. When the first eyewitness accounts were being released early on 9/11, they were referring to a 767′s as everything but. Add to it the fact that it was being trailed by a fighter escort and I don’t begrudge the typical New Yorker some anxiety over the display.
His press secretary was unaware. At least they did not do this on 9/11/09.
Will they apologize?
Goose: No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.
Maverick: Sorry Goose, but it’s time to buzz a tower.
Vsatt,
some people elected a PUNK!!
This oughta give Alex Jones and 911 truthers a run for their money!!! LOL
anxiety, yes.
Full blown freak out, hair on fire, evacuate the city panic? No.
But i still blame the obstructions gopers in congress.
Agreed.
But of course.
*But P-BO did say he has a gift; And it is certainly the gift that keeps on giving; Kinda like hemorrhoids!
*And don’t forget, they have a 9/10 mentality so are completely unaware!
Instead of developing a vaccine for this flu, how about a vaccine to help us survive the next 4 years.
Photo op?
My guess is they were flying in low to see if the Lady had the Flu.
Morons, This admin is Anal.
Do they understand that by the time they develop the vaccine, get it approved, manufacture it, and ship it out this plague, pandemic, minor blip, whatever this is will be over, the dead, if any will be buried, and they would have wasted hundreds of millions???
Either that or we will all be running from the walking dude… read the stand.
I have read the unabridged version more htan once, great book!
I want to know who was on the Air Force 1 type plane… who was taking the Photos on the Photo op, and why were my tax dollars paying for it?
“That’s a negative Ghost rider, the pattern is full.”
Kudos to whoever did the photoshop on the main page for this thread. Sure, it’s a silly photoshop, but you actually used a 747 windscreen.
It’s all in the details.
So all in all a good day!
You do realize this is President Obama 100 days in office eve don’t you? So tomorrow we all gather at the Fedzilla building and sing:
Happy 100 days to you
We are so screwd
Happy 100 days Mr. President
Happy 100 days to you
[insert tear here]
I must be dense, but could someone please explain to me why they needed a photo op? We’re being held hostage by the greenies of the world, ‘Bambi is going to tax the very air you breathe, yet they waste tons of precious jet fuel and a fighter jet or two for a photo op? We are witnessing “Animal House” on steroids.

I found it in half-pints, pints, 4/5 quart and half-gallon size. Lower doses administered by 12, 16, and twenty ounce containers of 6, 12 and twenty-four.
The worst part of this whole idiotic flyby? All the publicity has completely ruined whatever new logo UhBama wanted to use the photos for.
Why was there a need for a “photo op”?? Any particular reason? Truly a dumb move. This was Manhattan, for crying out loud. You know, the city that got hit on 9/11? Whoever planned this is completely brain dead. Must have been Pelosi.
With a president this hip, he needs his own photo ops. Recycling photo ops done under anyone else, especially Booooosh, would be UNSAT.
I hear they are working on some hero theme music to follow him around. A senior aide was anonymously quoted as saying, “Every hero gots to have some.”
Why was anyone afraid? The war on terror is over.
I recommend gin and tonic in moderate quantities.
Tequila on days like today… You can be immoderate if not driving…
I think I feel sick..
deep breath…I ain’t scared of the kindergarden politician…
Seems that folks had visceral reactions. Fight or flight. Walk in their shoes.
Romeo,
It was not an airforce one “type” plane
it WAS opne of the actual planes used as airforce one
Another Obama failure.
Just another reason to do away with the Air Force.
Where are we living??????
Can you imagine being one of the pilots and crew assigned this “mission”…?
What a shame to do to good people.
Okay, I would have seen that it was air force one and calmed the F down.
Nomination for the dumbest post of the day!!!
Lets see how the media goes on a witch hunt for who was responsible for this.
On April 27th, 2009 at 4:38 pm, southcoast said: nothing resembling intelligent thought.
Bartertown.
Please, what is it the Air Force does that can’t be accomplished by another branch of the service.
Cathy B,
Good question perhaps practicing for May day celebration.
This is so cruel and sick.
No, really, is this a serious question?
I was irritated initially. Then I got a laugh.
Attaboy, Doug. Still irritated, however.
A photoshop would have been less alarming, less expensive, less polluting, and more time efficient. I think this was a Decepticon plot to gauge the behavior of humans in a high-tension scenario.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen—coming to a theater near you on June 24th!
According to the linked report, the jets were circling the Statue of Liberty – how symbolic…sigh. Maybe preparing a publicity offensive in the later battle over amnesty?
Not to get too far OT, but that book was the first time I saw my given name in a novel, it’s a bit uncommon.
Son,
come on now have some compassion you know damn well that is not plausible for most folks. Anyone that lived thru 9/11 wasn’t standing around trying to identify the planes.
You are not as cold and arrogant as you are coming across.
You need to ask someone who is in the Air Force…person to person. See what they say. Ha! You are really a moron.
What an asinine question. I guess if you give the Army enough boats we don’t need a Navy? The missions and environments are different enough to justify a separate service. If you don’t like it… tough.
Thanks, Ragspierre, but I can’t stand even the smell of gin. Trouble is with alcohol, you have to face life unchanged in the morning, unfortunately, with a headache. Such side-effect would never be approved by the FDA. Now, a good single blend Scotch….
I would have tried to identify the planes, but thats just me I guess. Considering that air force one is probably the most famous plane in the world, I would think at least somebody in all those buildings would have taken 2 seconds to look at the planes and say wait a sec…
Its amusing to me. But then I have a dark sense of humor. Sorry if it bothers you.
They frag more marines than the other branches combined…
perhaps south is from one of vast majority of nations on the planet that don’t have the awesome military we do?
Godspeed to all of you serving or vets and agree with previous poster about the po saps who had to fly those planes.
Says someone who sleeps, blissfully ignorant, under the blanket of protection they provide.
If you are going to seriously ask that question, do at least a modicum of research before spouting off. You might be surprised at what you learn.
Please ladies and gentlemen, do not give the ‘regime that morons built’ ideas about getting rid of any branch of the military. They’ll think it’s a populist idea and put it on a fast track.
bansharia: I must admit it would not be the first time someone found me cold about some things. My experience has made me who I am.
Son,
had you been there you could have been a calming influence with your knowledge.
hugs Son
Maybe not. I might have said something like “calm the F down you idiot, that is air force one.” My nco tact is in full swing. BTW BNCOC is now officaly a joke.
hugs bansharia back!!!
Son,
whoops my last post to you got barred LOL I tried to say you are a dam fine man ( we have ways around censorship )
I’m so sorry, I start seeing “Top Gun” quotes and I get carried away. A “Top Gun” quote most appropriate for this scenario? Hmmmmm….
Oh yeah…
24K,
You really have to wonder where in the world they are getting these ideas from!
I’m in LA and whenever I hear a military jet (they’re very loud) I go on alert. Same with a large, low-flying jetliner that is not in the customary flight path. It’s out of the usual. Call it “management by exception”
Now consider a large airliner out of the usual flight path, pursued by two F-16s that are never seen in NYC except in the immediate aftermath of 9-111. Consider also that it’s coming at the Statue of Liberty, and American icon full of helpless tourists.
Is this a hijacked plane about to be shot down to prevent causalities on the ground? Can anyone make out the markings on the 747 to tell what it is? If so, does it matter?
Really a boneheaded move that shows a lack of maturity
Someone in the USAF command structure did not think to advise the fools at the Pentagon or White House (or whoever cooked up the plan) that this might panic even reasonable people on the ground? Dang.
Is stupid as contagious as the flu?
Has Team Obama never heard of PhotoShop?
For anyone but Obama, sure.
We’re talking about Obama, though. He’s a “storybook, man”.
As if we didn’t already know, here’s an Obama quote from Harry Reid referencing a conversation he had with Obama: “I have a gift.”
Lucifer
I would assume it takes a world of paperwork and filings for ‘one’ of the Air Force Ones to get off the ground, much less enter airspace in New York City and loop around the Statue of Liberty. Somebody, somewhere, is going to find themselves under than infamous bus if those orders didn’t come from the WH. If they did, it’ll all be forgotton under the blanket of another media made catastrophe.
I’ve never had a hang-over. I don’t drink to drunkenness. Just to what the Irish call, “Having drink taken”. Completely different… A slightly altered state, to be sure…
Laphroaig is my favorite Scotch…it is the FULL-TILT product of Islay, one of the Scots isles. It will make you hear bagpipes.
53%of Americans voted for that immature bonehead. Some even voted multiple times for that immature bonehead. Boneheads in New York voted for that immature bonehead in record numbers. The Bonehead in Chief gave them a flyover out of respect for their support.
Any questions?
Nope just an Executive Order from the Bonehead in Chief. Get used to it.
After cleaning up the larger chunks…
you can readily identify that as a complete departure into fiction writing by Dirty Harry.
“Without the barest hint of braggadocio or conceit, and with what I would describe as deep humility, he said quietly: ‘I have a teleprompter’”
The teleprompter was a gift.
Nuance, Jon, nuance.
24K,
I am still betting it was payback for some hollywoodistan slack who donated to obambi campaign.
There is ZERO doubt to me axelrod or rahm approved this.
Here’s an idea for a photo op go rescue Roxana and it will actually look like you’r doing something, something good.
I do not think this was one bit funny. I was at work on Sept. 11 and we had the radio on when the twin towers were hit. I was crying so hard I could hardly stand. If this bho did this on purpose, I might suggest he get some medical help! If you think bho didn’t know, nothing gets done without his or mo ok.
L
In conclusion, it was a dumb move from the whitehouse but the New Yorkers over reacted.
IMHO.
Obama is full of himself. He sees the taxpayers as his personal bank and the US as his playground to do whatever, whenever wherever, no matter what it costs or how it affects people.
MSNBC headline on the web: “Low-flying jets spook NYC”.
That’s too funny. And racist. A black president’s plane “spooks” NYC!
So, it looked to me after viewing the film that it was a hazy day. So the majority of folks in Manhattan couldn’t spot air force One through the haze. Seems like maybe DY’s son should cut them some slack. After all, not everyone can be as perfect as sonofdy and Obama.
bansharia
I think you’re spot on with the assessment that someone did approve this thing, but with the attention it’s getting we’ll never hear the mea culpa.
letget
I was 2500 miles away from New York on 9/11 and I still get the willies seeing planes where they shouldn’t be. You are correct, this was not funny and potentially very damaging mentally to those either working or living close to ground zero. I can’t believe no one that approved this didn’t give it a second thought. That in itself is the scary part.
What isn’t wrong with this man! I see FOX told Obama “no” re: airing yet another one of his press conferences. They will carry on with regular scheduling. LOVE IT!
Could it have been to much to ask that this adminstration (or who ever) scheduled this photo op to spend 5 minutes writing a press release and sending it to all the tv and radio stations in NY?
However, I am glad to see New Yorkers with a healthy dose of concern like the passengers who complained about the imans in Minnesota a few years ago.
Hat tip to NY’s finest in blue and red-Especially Retfireman!

traveler49:
Its alright, we are allowed to disagree.
Obama will still be the worst president in american history if we disagree.
He-man democrat in action. I’m surprised that Chicago Thug wasn’t photographed standing on top of the Statue of Liberty with his hands on his hips, chin held high in his best Superman pose during the fly-by. What a thoughtless moron.
Wow, permission to disagree. Thanks
I’m not trying to defend anyone, but let’s look at a reason to not make this public ahead of time.
The Air Force is not in the habit of posting flight schedules of VC-25s. Public notice of this flight could have alerted a terrorist group of the exact whereabouts of a VC-25.
Could you imagine a Al Qaeda sleeper cell in NYC and the publicity of blowing the “other Air Force One” out of the sky?
I imagine that was part of the equation in not making this public.
Drugs can only do so much. I doubt there is a cure for BO.
