MSNBC vs. local weatherman
Bill Steffen is the Chief Meteorologist for WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Living 30 miles or so east of Grand Rapids, I see Bill’s forecasts on occasion — most often at this time of year, when severe spring weather is rolling through.
But Steffen, an over 30-year meteorology veteran, has made some fine contributions to his field, most notably recently when he challenged the claims made in MSNBC’s four-part series called “Future Earth: Journey to the End of the World.”
Here’s just the beginning of Bill’s rebuttal to MSNBC’s program:
MSNBC is running a four-part series entitled Future Earth. On their website they say you can “find out why Earth’s climate machine — the North Pole — is melting alarmingly fast. Learn about our planet’s future, and how you can stop its decline.”
First, the North Pole is not “Earth’s Climate Machine”. There is far more heat and area in the Tropics than at the North Pole. Second, YOU can’t stop it’s decline (assuming it’s declining)! Nature is big – you personally are insignificant compared to nature. Don’t you wish you had the power to control icecaps!

The Antarctic icecap (which is much bigger than the Arctic icecap) has been growing. In Sept. 1979 (first year of satellite data) the Antarctic icecap was 18.4 million sq. km. In Sept. 2008, the Antarctic icecap was at 19.2 million sq. km. That’s a 30-year trend. By comparison, Michigan is 151,586 sq. km, so that’s an increase in icecover of over five times the area of Michigan.MSNBC could instead be doing a story on the trend of cooling in Antarctica and possible falling sea levels due to ice accumulation in Antarctica. Keep in mind that if the Polar icecap (without Greenland) melted…it would hardly cause sea level to rise, because the icecap is currently displacing water in the Arctic Ocean.
Later, Bill touches on the biggie. The most offensive word you can use to describe the motivations of some “environmentalists” — the dreaded “c” word: “capitalist” greed (go to the blog post to access the links):
One last point, MSNBC is owned by General Electric. GE is already making money off the issue with their Carbon Credit Master Card (link from “Treehugger”, no less). Here’s CNN’s story on the new credit card.
Interesting note: In the fourth quarter of 2008 as GE/NBC stock fell 30 percent, GE spent $4.26 million on lobbying — that’s $46,304 each day, including weekends, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In 2008, the company spent a grand total of $18.66 million on lobbying.” Reviewing their lobbying filings, GE’s specific lobbying issues included the “Climate Stewardship Act,” “Electric Utility Cap and Trade Act,” “Global Warming Reduction Act,” “Federal Government Greenhouse Gas Registry Act,” “Low Carbon Economy Act,” and “Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act.” Do you think this “big business” is just concerned about the environment?

Having previously worked in local television at the affiliate level for almost 20 years, I can say that there are many, many other meteorologists like Bill Steffen who simply are too intimidated, for whatever reason(s), to speak out about the scam of Gore & Company. Kudos to Mr. Steffen for speaking his mind.

There are a lot of meteorologists willing to refute a lot of the fallacy of man-made global warming. The problem is that they have been cowed into a safely subservient posture by the PC police and wildly favorable media towards the opposing viewpoint. The story of how much money Al Gore, GE, and others have made off of the environmental agenda needs to be shouted from the rooftops.
Algore and the Whackos keep saying that the global warming debate is over. I agree. It’s over, and they’re wrong.
I believe in a God who is in charge of all of nature and if He wants the earth to become hotter there is NOTHING that we insignificant humans can do about it. I read that the Sun has been so quiet lately that there is speculation that this inactivity by the Sun will lead to further cooling of the Earth. I wouldn’t worry about Global Warming. It’s just another hysteria stirred up by the MSM for the benefit of a small group of people who are profiting off of this HOAX. Remember Y2K and all the hysteria about that. What actually happened when it arrived? NOTHING! Yes, I know, companies and people did do something to prevent it from being a problem, but the HYPE was overwhelming as to all the HORRIBLE things that were going to happened and DIDN’T. The Bible says the Earth is reserved for FIRE the next time God decides to destroy it and I don’t believe that ALL the humans on Earth can stop it when He sets it on FIRE. I also don’t believe that it will be a gradual warming. I believe that He will unleash the atoms that are current held in place by His power and that when he does that, it will the BIGGEST NUCLEAR EXPLOSION that the Earth will ever experience.
God I hate GE. So glad I sold my stock.
I moved to Alaska in the 70’s and the winters are much colder than they used to be. The people in the northern states would echo that–even Seattle has had unusally cold winters the last few years. Algore goes to London: It snows. I agree with txvet2–they are so wrong, thus “climate change.”
There is a difference between meteorology and climatology. Meteorology is about short-term weather patterns, with the more immediate forecasts the most accurate, while climatology is about long-term trends, which at this stage of the relatively new branch of science is about 98% speculation. The weather is bigger than all of us, and scientists are finding patterns in sunspot cycles, the position of the moon in relation to ocean tides, and even in the position of our solar system as it revolves around the center of our galaxy. But even these things, as rational as they sound, are still inconclusive at this stage of our knowledge.
Humans, the vain animal.
Let’s just make it clear so that everyone understands: there is no “man-made” global warming. Even the warming part is far from proved. If the planet is getting warmer, it’s because it is going through one of its cycles — the same ones the Earth has undergone over billions of years. Nothing we do, or don’t do, has any effect on the temperature whatsoever!
So am I. More precisely, I’m glad I sold my stock while I was ahead.

Having a degree in Meteorology (GO PURDUE), which is NOT the study of meteorites, I often get a real giggle watching all of these meteorolgist wanna-be types like Algore and MSNBC claiming that the earth is warming, the caps are melting, the coastlines are submerging, etc. etc. blah, blah, blah. Why don’t all of you guys get a REAL job, starting with a MS degree and stop making such idiotic fools of yourselves.

I’m trying to talk my husband into stocking up on incandescent light bulbs. Or maybe, after the date when they’re outlawed here, we can buy them from some country that still has a bit of freedom.
I saw the “End of the World” listed on the tv last night, and the description made it sound like a “journey to the Arctic Circle” kind of documentary. Then I turned it on and heard Keith Olbermann’s voice narrating. I turned it right back off after that, p.o’d that I’d never get that 5 seconds of my life back.
The environmental movement is just like anything else: Follow the money. If there’s no global warming, how many non-profits and environmental concerns lose millions of dollars they collect from their fear-mongering? They’re looking out for #1, just like everyone else.

As long as there is money to be made, and power to be gained, the global warming “crisis” will continue. Once all that dries up, we’ll cycle right back into that global cooling “crisis” we had 30 years ago…that replaced the global warming “crisis” before that.
I’ll never forget how years ago David Letterman did one of his increasingly unfunny setup pieces in the audience of the Ed Sullivan Theater using a meteorologist for a Connecticut CBS affiliate. Dave, a former weatherman himself, said to the current weatherman, “How ’bout that global warming?” The meteorologist confidently answered with a grin, “It’s a myth.” Dave let him elaborate briefly, but it was clear he was uneasy with the unexpected response.
The cavalry in coming in for Bill Steffen. San Francisco talk show host Brian Sussman is a former TV meterologist at KPIX-TV in San Francisco, and was wildly popular with viewers and staff alike until he finally got fed up with the hypocrisy and bias, and went into talk radio about five years ago.
Sussman, who has contributed editorials to The American Thinker (and a veteran of Keith Blowhardmann’s “Worst Person in the World”) announced last week he has signed a contract to publish a book debunking AGW tentatively titled Global Whining.
Carbon Credit Master Card? Why I will run over to the Treehugger Bank of GE and get me one of those! Yes sir I could use one of those next time I buy Propane for the grill and gasoline for my truck, two cars, boat, lawnmower, weed eater and get my permit to cut a Christmas Tree. Yes Sir good people: GE brings good things to CFL light.

I understand the fellow who originated The Weather Channel bailed out years ago because of the way it was leaning from education into agenda.

Two of my professors do extensive research (the real kind, not AlGore’s kind) into climate modeling and are members of the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program. I have no problem with this.
My problem comes when I go into my local Barnes and Noble to get my kid the latest Little Critter book for Earth Day. I think…planting trees, don’t be wasteful, appreciate the outdoors, etc. No problem, right? Nay, nay!! Little Critter is watching a film in class about polar bears perching on an ice flow…wait a minute…HELL NO!!! AlGore is in my kid’s book!!! ARGH!

The right has taken to bashing NBC for for supposedly distorting the news in favor of its owner GE. Well, GE is not a liberal organization. On the other hand, Fox News is owned by Rupert Murdock, who owns media partly for the purpose of promoting conservative causes. He is willing to take a continuing loss on the New York Post for the purpose of polluting NYC news stands with conservative drivel.
Only 1/10 of Arctic sea ice is above the surface of the water. All of the Arctic ocean sea ice could melt today and the seas would not raise one, single inch.
Remember from school? Ice is the only liquid that expands into a solid.

Proof that Sea Levels are rising LGM? Give us the proof. Show us all where that data is and how it was determined.
Frankly, watching Deadliest Catch is really informative in more ways than one. Watching the Ice Pack grow to covering 2/3rds of the Ocean west of Alaska tells me it is cold there. That also tells me the North Pole does not melt in Winter. All of this put together tells me that you, LGM, must own a lot of Stock in GE.

GE stands to make a *lot* of money off the misery of others (and cap-and-trade is going to cause a *lot* of misery – from laid off workers to the shivering cold poor). I was taught many years ago that the “Sun”, expands and retracts in cycles. Kind of like BREATHING.
I do believe this because it makes alot more sense than Algores doomsday theories.
I have even wondered about that, since water is an anomaly in that it actually expands when it freezes.
This is a point I hadn’t considered.
It’s like if you put ice in a cup of water, its water level would rise, but if you just let it sit and melt its level would not be in fact higher, because water expands when it freezes.
This is how the process of weathering on roads happens. Water gets into crevices, freezes, expands, and breaks up parts of the concrete producing pot holes.
I also notice this phenomena when I make Iced tea. I fill my pitcher about half to three quarters full with ice, add sweetener, then poor in the hot steeping tea, and sometimes a little extra water. Why? because when the ice melts the level it is initially filled too goes down somewhat.
Yeah, I guess you have to pretty dumb to buy into Al Gore’s doomsday scenarios. Hence: lgm.

If temperatures are warming, wouldn’t that cause sea water to evaporate? Water can coexist in two states of matter at the same temperature, and as I learned in high school chemistry, can even sublime from ice directly to vapor.

This is not a criticism of Mr. Steffen (because the Global Warmists do the same thing), but is it possible that, when discussing polar ice-caps, people can stop measuring THREE-dimensional objects in TWO dimensions?
As has been pointed out, even if 100% of the ice at the North Pole melted, it would not raise the seal level even 1 inch as ice is about 9% less dense than water, which corresponds exactly to the part above water. Global warming alarmists have successfully counted on the general public’s lack of critical thinking to create a mass hysteria over this issue and at the same time manage to convince people that somehow conservative are “against” science or twist it to suit their needs. Yet their teams of global warming experts seem to have missed (or deliberately ignore) the the incredibly obvious point above. How maddening insane is this?
If the global warming crowd prevails and destroy the world economy, which their ideas will do, the people that fell for this obvious fraud will get what they deserve, and good and hard. Unfortunately for sane, clear thinking people will suffer along with everyone else or worse be expected to bear the brunt of the financial pain.
Thank goodness people are finally waking up to this scam. Even Republicans and Conservatives were buying th Gore fabrication. There IS NO global warming. We can no more save the planet than ants can save human beings. True scientists know that concocted computer models do not constitute science and replace the scientific method.

Anybody who can embrace the proposition that melting Arctic sea ice will cause sea levels to rise — in violation of Archimedes Principle (settled science for over 2,000 years) — will have no trouble accepting the proposition that sea levels are rising regardless of the fact that Arctic and Antarctic ice areas are also increasing.
You see, the zombies just don’t care that they simultaneously believe in two mutually exclusive propositions. For an explanation of this phenomenon, I recommend a book by a fellow named George Orwell, entitled Nineteen Eighty-Four.
GE uses NBC/U to promo liberal-Dem causes in order to be the anti-Fox (not working) in their cable news-business divisions; to get favorable treatment during this downturn in securing bailout cash; and to acquire government contracts in producing alternate energy devices, like wind turbines, as a part of the Dems’ “plan” to take the US off fossil fuels.
As for the NYPost losing money, newspapers across the nation are in that same boat – especially all the liberal Tribunes, Times, and Chronicles. What’s more, I don’t recall the NYPost having to sell part of it’s building.

At a recent shareholders meeting, Immelt was grilled by shareholders over the bias and disrespect at MSNBC.
Is there any liberal who knows anything about economics? Fox News is second only to USA, because they got lucky and picked up re-runs of NCIS. Murdoch isn’t in any trouble, and the left-wing media is fuming over the success of people like Sean Hannity who don’t have a college degree and are making hundreds of millions of dollars while the left-wing dopes who go to school at Columbia, rack up 100K in debt end up getting jobs at bankrupt newspapers at $40,000 a year because their ideology is more important than making a living.

Actually Fox News is owned by News Corp, of which Rupert Murdoch is the Chairman, Managing Director and major shareholder (but not the “owner”).
What really grates them is that a television journalist in the elite top of the profession is either reading a teleprompter, or getting 30 seconds of airtime on a nightly newscast. Maybe 20 minutes a week if they’re on a Dateline or a 60 Minutes.
Meanwhile, Rush, Sean, Glenn, Laura, Mark, O’Reilly get 15 to 20 hours a week. They get to go in depth on the stories that interest them. And they have a much larger, more engaged audience.

Why is it that the news of about a month ago that the sensors for monitoring the ice, the ones that “showed” the ice was shrinking, were wrongly placed now not even part of the equation?
The data gathering sensors collected the wrong data but the conclusions that were based on that bad data are left intact? How’s that?
Silly humans…thinking that they control the Earths climate. The climate is driven by the sun, the oceans (70% of the Earths surface), the oceans’ currents, the tilt of the Earths’ axis, the movement of our solar system through the galaxy, etc. etc. etc.
Total human biomass on Earth is estimated at about 100 million metric tons. Arctic krill comprise about 500 million tons. Plants and bacteria each comprise about 2 billion metric tons. Everyone knows the stars, the oceans, the plants and bacteria control the climate.

Interesting, Marco. What I got from the graphs is that we are currently experiencing one of the LOWEST sea levels in the history of earth. There is nowhere for the sea levels to go BUT up.
As I said before….The eco-lobby is in a full-court press because (I think) they know things starting to cycle away from “global warming”. Just wait…several years after cap&trade, etc gets passed, they will take credit for the cooling that started:
1) before the legislation was enacted, and
2) well before the new technologies will be developed.
In related news, ants are estimated to have a total biomass of between 900 million and 9 billion metric tons (hard to get an estimate on those pesky little critters). Since ants are known manipulators of the environment and prducers of methane in the process, the White House is forming a special task force on ants. Rumor is that Al Gore will be named ant czar to address the problem of global ant flatulation.
In related news, liberal scientists have expressed concern about clouds. Although they float in the air, clouds are actually quite heavy. Scientists fear that if clouds become too heavy, they may pose a threat to humans by falling out of the sky in the form of “rain”. The NeroBama administration is responding to this threat from clouds by announcing the formation of a task force to establish a cap and trade sysytem for clouds. The derivatives market for cap & trade on clouds is expected (although highly speculative), to be quite lucrative.
It’s being broadcast on MSNBC nobody watches MSNBC unless they can turn it into a bloc doc? Going Green Behind Bars LOL!
These CO2 alarmists need to understand that life on earth is carbon based. The chief form of carbon transfer between life forms is via C02. Less C02 means less life, less diversity, struggles for all (whether they drive an SUV or not).

Just caught this at Tom Nelson Blog concerning what the One said at the recent Arnold Missouri town hall meeting – scary stuff indeed.

How is it possible that a Navy sub surfaced at the north pole on MARCH 17, 1959 in apparently OPEN WATER? Doesn’t that mean it might have been WARMER THERE back then than it is now? (Please note the current ice conditions experienced by the the fools on the Catlin Arctic Survey team who aren’t even at the north pole over a month beyond when this picture was taken.)
Obama is either just a commie liar like the rest of the econazis or too stupid to know the truth. Either way – that makes him a very dangerous POTUS.
