What’s wrong with the official apology for the Manhattan fly-by?
The “official apology” on the White House website would appear to have a mistake in it:
Somebody needs to tell the White House to stop referring to the flight that buzzed Manhattan as “Air Force One.” The plane only gets that call sign when it’s carrying the president. Or… was it?

Something is unusual about the fly-by. Who was taking the pictures? Aren’t F-16 single pilot fighter planes? Are the pilots taking pictures? I serious doubt it.

MM and bloggers, I didn’t get it (wingnut snark reply here). What is wrong with the apology, aside from a slightly inaccurate description of the plane. Should he have said: “the plane whose purpose is to transport the President and uses call sign Airforce One when it does.”

Why was any VC-25 AF1 plane, main or reserve, being used for this? Shouldn’t protocol specify that every plane used as Air Force One be prepared for use by the president at a moment’s notice? That would be known as a contingency plan. According to this, only two VC-25s are currently in use. More than one higher-up had to know this was the wrong thing to do. Something’s rotten in the District of Columbia.

Because it totally AVOIDED apologizing for the actual wrong that was committed – telling the authorities to NOT inform the public. That is the big issue here, not just the idiotic waste of money for the flight.

Problem one: The entire mission was frivolous, wasteful and insensitive beyond belief.
Problem two: What about the guv? If he was notified, why did he allow it?
Problem three: If is true that Mayor Bloomberg was not notified by an underling because Obama’s office instructed him not to, why was he not fired? I don’t believe hizzonah on this one. I believe he knew about it.

Bump this to Problem one: Why isn’t apology for having approved the mission in the first place? The problem wasn’t that “despite taking all proper steps….”, it was that it was approved in the first place.

2/It says they informed everyone but they fail to say that they told them to to alert the public.

No way can Caldera approve the mission or any mission. If Obama delegated it, Caldera may be accountable, but since RESPONSIBILITY can never be delegated, Obama takes the hit directly for this one.

Actually, there were two things wrong with said apology:
1) It inherently means that Obama is pretending not to know anything about it.
2) Calderon wasn’t making it from the street in front of the WH while holding his box of Office stuff.

Well, if we’re admitting to a sick sense of humor, my first reaction when I heard about the “mistake” was to laugh. I mean, New Yorkers voted for the guy by what, 5-1? But then, I had the same reaction to the DC parents whose kids are losing their vouchers.

This was a military mission. Anythimg flown by the military is a military mission, regardless of the objective. The important thing in my beady little brain is, who is the planner of this mission? Who decided it should have this level of “secrecy”? If Zero just wamts to play with his new toys (he was probably just showing off for his buds) there should be some accountability somewhere. Do you think the Air Force asks justification anytime Zero wants to go for a joy ride? They have enough problems with the Pelosi thing.
Which ones? ‘Cause I’ve sampled various outlets (mostly the Internet, but some radio and tv) and the only ones NOT blaming the Air Force for this fiasco are those that lean right.

I went to see what the messiahs faithful bots are saying at DU. I quick look and I was able to read a half dozen comments stating that it HAD to be some sort of a Rovian scheme by some GOP mole at work. They simply cannot accept that anyone in the administration could possibly have screwed up. And you would not believe the number of comments that find the whole idea of freaked out New Yorkers funny. Some wiser heads have been taking them to ask on the joking around. More from being worried at it being used against them than from any concern about it being in bad taste. Looks like they actually locked one thread because of the comments. I am sure they will send as many of them down the “memory hole” as they can.

If this wasn’t some frivolous outing for “somebody” or an unneeded photo op (operation or opportunity?) – perhaps they’d like to explain why 3 military aircraft were on training missions over the city of New York. Is it routine to practice over a city of gargantuan size potentially threatening the lives of thousands should one of the 3 aircraft encounter a problem and crash? I’m not a conspiracy believer either but something is really wrong with all the explanations given.
Might add – seeing the smirk at the end of ‘Bambi’s mea culpa pretty well convinced me this was no surprise to him either.

Usually, air-to-air photo shoots fly abeam the camera platform, not behind, unless the F16 driver was shooting the pics while flying his aircraft. Maybe they only wanted images from behind, of the tail?

The plane is never designated “AF1″ until the President is aboard. Any other time, it has a regular designation. As soon as the President sets foot on the plane, the pilot notifies the tower that he is now “AF1″. In other words, the President could decide to take a little flight out of a small local airport on a little cessna, if he wanted to…tourism, maybe. As soon as he gets aboard, that little cessna is officially designated “AF1″, with all the perks that go with the designation, until he steps off. I certainly don’t think the pilot of that 747 reported it as “AF1″ and flew it to NYC. Of course, these days, who knows? It is so screwed up in D.C., it’s an anything goes atmosphere, as shown by the Congress going beserk and a President who can’t talk without someone writing it on a teleprompter.

Since the White House guy verified it was a “mission”, this is definitely Obamsa “mission accomplished” moment just like Bushs aircraft carrier banner.

I hate to point this out:
When GWB flew his mission to Iraq (under TS cover so tight that even most of his staff had no clue that he was not in the Country), his plane left under a non-designated tail number. In fact, there was worry about other commercial traffic identifying flight 1 as AF1. Flight 2 went under cover of needing service, and parked in an undisclosed location in a nearby country.
All of this was released on the History Channel on AF1.
All that said, It is not AF1 if the President is not on-board. But since when have the Democrats allowed proper protocol to supercede their flex of political muscle.
