Biden: Avoid planes and subways, but not really

By Doug Powers  •  April 30, 2009 10:18 AM

Poor Joe can’t get a break. He passes along advice that’s not entirely bad, and he ends up being corrected:

Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that he would not recommend taking any commercial flight or riding in a subway car “at this point” because swine flu virus can spread “in confined places.”
[...]
“I would tell members of my family – and I have – I wouldn’t go anywhere in confined places now,” Biden said on NBC’s “Today” show.. “It’s not that it’s going to Mexico. It’s [that] you’re in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft. That’s me. …
[...]
That contradicted more restrained advice from President Barack Obama and the federal government – and the last thing the White House wants to do right now is shut down the airline industry and big city subways out of mass panic.

Swine flu”? Joe hasn’t gotten the memo yet.

Biden’s appearance prompted the White House to release a statement saying that Biden was only talking about planes going to and from Mexico, even though Biden made it clear that he wasn’t only talking about Mexico:

The White House quickly arranged for Biden to make this statement through a spokesperson.

“On the Today Show this morning the Vice President was asked what he would tell a family member who was considering air travel to Mexico this week. The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the Administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico. If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways. This is the advice the Vice President has given family members who are traveling by commercial airline this week. As the President said just last night, every American should take the same steps you would take to prevent any other flu: keep your hands washed; cover your mouth when you cough; stay home from work if you’re sick; and keep your children home from school if they’re sick.”

We can assume that Biden was also only referring to avoiding the subway system between the U.S. and Mexico.

I have to give Biden a pass on this one. Maybe the first sensible thing I’ve heard him say in quite some time.

So I’d say his intentions were probably good but he jumped the gun.

No. And DHS is prohibiting border agents from wearing masks and gloves.

    From the Washington Post:

CALEXICO, Calif. — It’s a border, not a barrier, yet the money-changers on the Mexican side wear rubber gloves and face masks. And 50 feet to the north, Raul Martinez changes pesos into dollars with his bare hands, and not a stitch covering a smile that turns rueful when he’s asked why.

“I don’t know why,” said Martinez, 58, chuckling at either his bravery or his delusion as the reality of the border in the time of swine flu comes home: “It’s the same air!”

Calexico and Mexicali, its neighbor to the south, blend as charmingly as their names, two towns in two countries separated by an international boundary but united by much more, at least under normal circumstances. But with the emergence of a virulent strain of influenza deeper in Mexico, a border population that moves daily between the countries has begun to act as though people are simply safer on the American side, complicating efforts to contain the outbreak, according to public health specialists.

The risks were made clear Wednesday when a Mexican child became the first fatality in the United States. The 23-month-old infant fell ill while visiting relatives in Brownsville, Tex., on one side of a border that roughly 600,000 people cross on a typical day, south to north.

In Washington, lawmakers in both parties called Wednesday for tighter border controls, including possibly closing parts of it. Senior government health and security officials insisted that doing so would have “marginal” medical value because the virus has already spread across the United States. Nevertheless, the panel’s chairman, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.). warned the Obama administration to consider tighter checks, such as on Mexican temporary workers, “because I think if you don’t, there will be growing pressure to really close the ports of entry.”

    Read the whole thing.

    As another blogger points out:

DHS is afraid of how it might look if Border Agents wear masks but not concerned about Agents catching the disease. I suppose they haven’t thought about the fact that masks on agents also protect the people the agents are inspecting. What if an agent gets the flu and has contact with thousands of people a day? How will that look?

Political correctness trumps common sense in the Age of Obama.

The government’s response in Mexico seems way out of proportion to the reported number of ill and seriously ill people. Maybe we can send a truth commision over there to dig through the evidence. If the same politicians who easily buddied up to Chavez, Mullahs, and Castro start hesitating, maybe there is a bigger story here.

Yes politics and PC trump everything don’t they? Regardless of how good your medical services you fight pathogens with ISOLATION and quarantine. That is the major way we beat polio and small pox-inoculation and vaccination are not the end all and be all.

My granddaughter has the flu as do three other girls in her pre school and is now in the hospital. Two of the girls have siblings with swine flu and attend one school over in Chandler. If she were older they might not have hospitalized her but she is only three. But Arizona does have a fatal case now.

Joe Biden can go to hell–this is my family we are talking about, not his re-election. Seal the damn border and SAVE OUR CHILDREN. Their pediatrician says this flu appears to be less virulent than some others–but as it is at the end of the season they are worrying about a rebound next year. I guess the second round of a flu is the worry.

I am half sick to death without having the flu. I would not mind re educating some political scum who threaten our children with their PC bull. Seal the damn border and SAVE OUR CHILDREN.

Maricopa County public health officials have closed two more schools, both in the Chandler Unified School District, after confirming that children there had been ill with the H1N1 swine flu virus.

The schools, Tarwater Elementary and Hartford Sylvia Encinas Elementary School, are both closed for seven days, officials said. They are not releasing any further details about the children, including ages, or how they contracted the disease, in order to protect their privacy

First, Obama gets upset at CEO’s for flying to Washington by private plane. Then the White House takes Air Force One out for a joy ride around ground zero for a photo op. Then Amtrack Joe tells people to avoid subway cars. And, to top it all off, Obama is in the process of taking over GM and Chrysler.

A movie of Obama’s first 100 days could easily be named “Trains, Planes, and Automobiles.”

Remind me again why Joe Biden was picked as VP? I didn’t really understand the “why” when he was first picked, either.

The one smart move that Obama made, as President. People are going to think twice before any attempt to get rid of him, knowing a guy with an IQ of 30 is going to take over, with a woman, in the wings, with an IQ of the same. You think Obama is bad with a teleprompter? How about a guy who can’t read a teleprompter?

    Dear Joe,

Once again, thank you so much for being…you. Just when I thought I couldn’t disappear any further from public view, your gift of garbled gab continues to keep you firmly in the spotlight.

    Signed,
    Dan Quayle

    p.s. I guess it’s a veep thing…evidently, the public understands.

Hmmm, I would have expected him to suggest splitting up the virus into three equal and autonomous regions that would then fight each other in perpetuity?
