John McCain goes to war again

By Doug Powers  •  April 30, 2009 03:06 PM

This time, fortunately, it’s only on television:

John McCain will be the host of AMC cable network’s Memorial Day weekend marathon of movies celebrating war heroes.

The former prisoner of war and Republican presidential candidate will introduce movies like “Midway,” “Patton,” “The Longest Day,” “Hamburger Hill,” “Tora! Tora! Tora!” and “Battle of the Bulge.”

McCain says the most interesting thing he’s found about heroes is that “they’re the last people to believe that they’re really heroes.”

I’m looking forward to the movies, Senator!

By the way, not to brag, but our dog Timmy does one heck of a Patton impression that McCain might want to consider using in the intro to that movie:

    How about:
    Sergeant York

The movie is pretty good, but the real-life Sergeant York was a very impressive guy. I wonder if modern elementary school history books even mention people like him. Sadly, I can guess the answer…

No, of course not. From what I remember, he only agreed to have the film made about him if Gary Cooper (his favorite actor) played him. Good casting if you wanted an ideal screen persona. York really looked more like Walter Brennan.

They Were Expendable with John Wayne and Robert Montgomery. Where Eagles Dare with Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. Wind Talkers with Nicholas Cage and Adam Beach is a good one. Memphis Belle and The Tuskegee Airmen are good. Glory is an excellent one about the Civil War.

Too bad I can’t think of many that aren’t about WW2. We Were Soldiers looks good, though I’ve never seen it.

I hope they are both good shooters. What a time for America.

Would ABC have published the names, business, and locale of people who interrogated Nazi spies during WWII?

No, people would have ripped them to shreds.

We Were Soldiers is one fine movie adaptation; I read the book after seeing the movie and heartily recommend it (the book and the movie).

    Same for Black Hawk Down.

I have a soft spot for WWII movies set in North Africa (The Rat Patrol TV series too) as my dad served there with the Army/Air Force.

I think McCain is a fine choice to do this on AMC. Sure beats the hell out of a guy named Murtha. I wonder if he got to choice the ones that will be shown.

So far, my best viewed movies are; Saving Private Ryan followed closely by the Band of Brothers series. Patton ranks up there only because I got charged as an adult when I saw it in the theatre back in ‘70. Oh and it is good enough to own.

For anti-war flicks, got to go with “Dr. Strangelove”. Peter Sellers at his best. George C. Scott is pretty good too.

“Paths of Glory” (1958) starring Kirk DOuglas is a classic WW I movie. It is awesome!

For WWII moview do not forget “Battleground” (1949) with Van Johnson and James Whitmore.

Korea, “Pork Chop Hill” starring Gregory Peck. AWESOME!

Vietnam, an Australian film, “The Odd, Angry Shot” was considered by Vietnam infantry vets I served with as the most realistic movie they saw.

funny you should mention that. I read the history behind the”The Lost Battalion” with Rick Shroeder.

The battalion got “lost” because the French unit on its flank which was to move forward in coordination with it decided not to, without bothering to issue notification, leaving the “lost” battalion exposed to being cut of by the Germans.

Operation Petticoat (comedy – VERY funny)

Oliver North did his JOB. Something, I suppose, that you think nobody in the military does. He was following orders so if you have a problem with that take it up with the Reagan administration which you loathe and didn’t vote for anyway.

As to McCain, a POW doesn’t give you permanent “war hero” status especially when you decide to cozy up with a former enemy like Vietnam. Something that many Vietnam veterans didn’t agree with when McCain did it and which Vietnam used to promote itself in a more positive light.

I love how Dems still use Col. North like a scapegoat because it’s easier than actually examining what occurred during Iran Contra. I also love how a lot of people judge past historical events through a contemporary, narrow lens.

I don’t think you’d know who/what an actual war hero is. I even wonder how many Colonels you actually know as well.

    Brett

There was a WW1 Maxim Machine gun that had been forgotten for nearly 80 years that was captured by SGT York at the Nahant (MA) Public Library, they found it in their attic.

They spoke to the BATFE agent in Boston and he had no clue who SGT York was. When I read this, I was floored. I had heard about him growing up and I’ve seen the Gary Cooper classic numerous times.

Public schools would rather talk about how heroic Hanoi Jane or Abbie Hoffman was while demonizing heroes like SGT York, Lt. Audie Murphy.

When I was in Jr. High in the mid 1980s I had a number of teachers who served in Vietnam and they talked about their experiences. My father heard stories of WWI when he was in Jr. High and High School (late 40s / early 50s). How many teachers today have served in the military?
