John McCain goes to war again
This time, fortunately, it’s only on television:
John McCain will be the host of AMC cable network’s Memorial Day weekend marathon of movies celebrating war heroes.
The former prisoner of war and Republican presidential candidate will introduce movies like “Midway,” “Patton,” “The Longest Day,” “Hamburger Hill,” “Tora! Tora! Tora!” and “Battle of the Bulge.”
McCain says the most interesting thing he’s found about heroes is that “they’re the last people to believe that they’re really heroes.”
I’m looking forward to the movies, Senator!
By the way, not to brag, but our dog Timmy does one heck of a Patton impression that McCain might want to consider using in the intro to that movie:

another victory in the
war on terrorismoverseas contingency operation against man-made disasters.Paging the Mossad…
Mr. Mossad…!!!
Target call.
Maby this could be the solution to our problem: Make Obama watch the John Wayne film library. Not the really old ones, but the war movies, The Alamo, and the rest could be a course in “How to be a man and an American”.
Somehow, I think he missed most of the lessons.
Me too.
I’m making that sound that Homer Simpson does when he thinks about bacon-wrapped sticks of butter…
drool.
The movie is pretty good, but the real-life Sergeant York was a very impressive guy. I wonder if modern elementary school history books even mention people like him. Sadly, I can guess the answer…
Brett
WWI..?
See “The Magnificent Obsession“
Michelle,
This very inspirational both as an American and a service member, Please take a few minutes to check out the video in the link and pass it on to others. Let’s make sure this gets around before Memorial Day to thank and remember why we still live on the greatest country on the face of this earth.
God Bless and Semper Fidelis,
Warriors in their own words

No, of course not. From what I remember, he only agreed to have the film made about him if Gary Cooper (his favorite actor) played him. Good casting if you wanted an ideal screen persona. York really looked more like Walter Brennan.

“A Bridge on the River Kwai” with Wil Holden has gotta be up there.
It looks like ABC “News” just killed two CIA consultants or employees. I wonder when the leftards will go nuts about “outing” covert CIA staff? [crickets chirping]

Some other good ones.
They Were Expendable with John Wayne and Robert Montgomery. Where Eagles Dare with Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. Wind Talkers with Nicholas Cage and Adam Beach is a good one. Memphis Belle and The Tuskegee Airmen are good. Glory is an excellent one about the Civil War.
Too bad I can’t think of many that aren’t about WW2. We Were Soldiers looks good, though I’ve never seen it.
York looked like this:

I hope they are both good shooters. What a time for America.
Would ABC have published the names, business, and locale of people who interrogated Nazi spies during WWII?
No, people would have ripped them to shreds.
World War I? The first great classic on that war was “The Big Parade” in 1925 starring John Gilbert. Most memorable is director King Vidor’s reenactment of the Marine charge at Belleau Wood.
*”Paths of Glory” by Stanley Kubrick is considered anti-war, but it is still one of the best, a classic.
not WW1 but one of my favorites is “The Great Escape” A terrific ensemble of actors!!
Anybody remember To Hell And Back?
How would Audie Murphy be treated today?
It was negative waves, not vibes. Big difference!
The Bridges At Toko-Ri with William Holden. Probably my favorite Korean War movie.
To a place on honor, high on Nappy Jan’s enemies list…
“The Bridge over the River Kwai” was a good movie – it popularized Colonel Bogey March. Movie starred William Holden, Alec Guinness, and others. WWII.

We Were Soldiers is one fine movie adaptation; I read the book after seeing the movie and heartily recommend it (the book and the movie).
Same for Black Hawk Down.
I have a soft spot for WWII movies set in North Africa (The Rat Patrol TV series too) as my dad served there with the Army/Air Force.
“The Cruel Sea”
Good WWI movie – The Fighting 69th.
There would not be any Audie Murphy today. Our government has effectively tied the hands of our guys when it comes to killing the enemy. I personally think this is why the war has gone on so long.
So many movies, so little time.
I think McCain is a fine choice to do this on AMC. Sure beats the hell out of a guy named Murtha. I wonder if he got to choice the ones that will be shown.
So far, my best viewed movies are; Saving Private Ryan followed closely by the Band of Brothers series. Patton ranks up there only because I got charged as an adult when I saw it in the theatre back in ‘70. Oh and it is good enough to own.
For anti-war flicks, got to go with “Dr. Strangelove”. Peter Sellers at his best. George C. Scott is pretty good too.
At least McCain is not a convicted felon who got off on a technicality (Oliver North). McCain was not cut out to be President, but he truly is a war hero. You should be ashamed of giving him the purple bandaid treatment.
Oliver North should host the AMC movies, lgm. That’s how I feel about it.
Wow! Your dog looks more presidential than Obama or McCain. Timmy for president!
Back down to that, huh? Don’t worry, maybe Karl will have the fax machine repaired by Monday, and you’ll have your talking points once more.
“Paths of Glory” (1958) starring Kirk DOuglas is a classic WW I movie. It is awesome!
For WWII moview do not forget “Battleground” (1949) with Van Johnson and James Whitmore.
Korea, “Pork Chop Hill” starring Gregory Peck. AWESOME!
Vietnam, an Australian film, “The Odd, Angry Shot” was considered by Vietnam infantry vets I served with as the most realistic movie they saw.
Sorry bjc, I missed your post. Agreed, the classic movie to remind you why you do not want the French on your flank!
we were soldiers. the most authentic vietnam movie. also good morning vietnam. while the worst, most rediculous farce of a story about vietnam was apocolypse now. oliver stone and the whole crew were too busy smoking dope and buggering little phillipino boys and girls to bother getting a technical adviser who had ever set foot in theatre. oliver stone was the technical advisor, now there’s a nonbiased source.
I really did like the companion movies ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’ and ‘Flags of our Fathers’.
I thought Adam Beach deserved a nomination for his acting in FooF.
funny you should mention that. I read the history behind the”The Lost Battalion” with Rick Shroeder.
The battalion got “lost” because the French unit on its flank which was to move forward in coordination with it decided not to, without bothering to issue notification, leaving the “lost” battalion exposed to being cut of by the Germans.
I heard on Rush that McCan’t will be part of a country wide tour to promote the GOP with Haley Barbour. With McAmnesty being part of the group it is be certain to fail.
My father flew a B-17 in WWII so Memphis Belle (original and remake) are pretty good.
Run Silent, Run Deep
Patton
The Great Escape
The Longest Day
The Sands of Iwo Jima
Operation Petticoat (comedy – VERY funny)
Band of Brothers
The Hunters (Korean War)
Basically, there is no such thing as an accurate war movie, though Band of Brothers comes close. Hollywood has to embellish.
Very good Cold War movie;
Fail Safe
It’s main Character, POTUS, ends up nuking NYC. That’s EXACTLY what duh1 would do and is why he so dangerous.
Oliver North did his JOB. Something, I suppose, that you think nobody in the military does. He was following orders so if you have a problem with that take it up with the Reagan administration which you loathe and didn’t vote for anyway.
As to McCain, a POW doesn’t give you permanent “war hero” status especially when you decide to cozy up with a former enemy like Vietnam. Something that many Vietnam veterans didn’t agree with when McCain did it and which Vietnam used to promote itself in a more positive light.
I love how Dems still use Col. North like a scapegoat because it’s easier than actually examining what occurred during Iran Contra. I also love how a lot of people judge past historical events through a contemporary, narrow lens.
I don’t think you’d know who/what an actual war hero is. I even wonder how many Colonels you actually know as well.
Is everyone geared up for Boo Fest 2009?
McCan’t is so proud of his outreach. Are you?
GOP Leaders Try to Polish Party’s Image should be renamed GOP Polishes DaBama’s Butt With Lips.
There was a WW1 Maxim Machine gun that had been forgotten for nearly 80 years that was captured by SGT York at the Nahant (MA) Public Library, they found it in their attic.
They spoke to the BATFE agent in Boston and he had no clue who SGT York was. When I read this, I was floored. I had heard about him growing up and I’ve seen the Gary Cooper classic numerous times.
Public schools would rather talk about how heroic Hanoi Jane or Abbie Hoffman was while demonizing heroes like SGT York, Lt. Audie Murphy.
When I was in Jr. High in the mid 1980s I had a number of teachers who served in Vietnam and they talked about their experiences. My father heard stories of WWI when he was in Jr. High and High School (late 40s / early 50s). How many teachers today have served in the military?
