The movie is pretty good, but the real-life Sergeant York was a very impressive guy. I wonder if modern elementary school history books even mention people like him. Sadly, I can guess the answer…

There was a WW1 Maxim Machine gun that had been forgotten for nearly 80 years that was captured by SGT York at the Nahant (MA) Public Library, they found it in their attic.

They spoke to the BATFE agent in Boston and he had no clue who SGT York was. When I read this, I was floored. I had heard about him growing up and I’ve seen the Gary Cooper classic numerous times.

Public schools would rather talk about how heroic Hanoi Jane or Abbie Hoffman was while demonizing heroes like SGT York, Lt. Audie Murphy.

When I was in Jr. High in the mid 1980s I had a number of teachers who served in Vietnam and they talked about their experiences. My father heard stories of WWI when he was in Jr. High and High School (late 40s / early 50s). How many teachers today have served in the military?

And a letter penned by Republican congressional leaders on Wednesday says the outreach is “not a Republican-only forum.”

Oliver North did his JOB. Something, I suppose, that you think nobody in the military does. He was following orders so if you have a problem with that take it up with the Reagan administration which you loathe and didn’t vote for anyway.

As to McCain, a POW doesn’t give you permanent “war hero” status especially when you decide to cozy up with a former enemy like Vietnam. Something that many Vietnam veterans didn’t agree with when McCain did it and which Vietnam used to promote itself in a more positive light.

I love how Dems still use Col. North like a scapegoat because it’s easier than actually examining what occurred during Iran Contra. I also love how a lot of people judge past historical events through a contemporary, narrow lens.

I don’t think you’d know who/what an actual war hero is. I even wonder how many Colonels you actually know as well.

funny you should mention that. I read the history behind the”The Lost Battalion” with Rick Shroeder.

The battalion got “lost” because the French unit on its flank which was to move forward in coordination with it decided not to, without bothering to issue notification, leaving the “lost” battalion exposed to being cut of by the Germans.

I thought Adam Beach deserved a nomination for his acting in FooF.

“Paths of Glory” (1958) starring Kirk DOuglas is a classic WW I movie. It is awesome!

For WWII moview do not forget “Battleground” (1949) with Van Johnson and James Whitmore.

Korea, “Pork Chop Hill” starring Gregory Peck. AWESOME!

Vietnam, an Australian film, “The Odd, Angry Shot” was considered by Vietnam infantry vets I served with as the most realistic movie they saw.
