Bluff called
President Obama said the following at a town hall meeting/100th day in office sermon:
“Those of you who are watching certain news channels on which I’m not very popular, and you see folks waving tea bags around, Obama said, “let me just remind them that I am happy to have a serious conversation about how we are going to cut our health care costs down over the long term, how we are going to stabilize Social Security.”
Strange that Obama could so easily reference something he was unaware of, but nonetheless, tea party organizers are taking the president up on the offer (they say “accepted his offer” because “called his bluff” sounds too harsh for hope):
The National Leadership Team of the Nationwide Tea Party Coalition today accepted President Obama`s invitation “to have a serious conversation about how we are going to cut our health care costs down over the long term, how we are going to stabilize Social Security.”
The invitation was extended by the President at a Town Hall Meeting held in Arnold, Missouri today. Michael Patrick Leahy, a member of the National Leadership Team of the Nationwide Tea Party Coalition, said “We want to broaden the scope to address the President`s runaway march to socialist-statism, and the rampant across the board irresponsible spending he is promoting with his $787 Billion Stimulus Plan and his $1 Trillion Annual Deficit, his takeover of General Motors, Chrysler and the Banks.”

Of course, the president’s “invitation” was of the “kiss my royal butt” variety, so don’t expect an actual meeting to come from any of this.
You’ll notice how the entire tea party movement is being dismissed as a Fox News stunt, which anyone who’s followed this since the beginning knows is a complete pile of Pelosi. As a matter of fact, didn’t this whole thing, at least in part, get rolling because of Santelli’s “rant” on CNBC?
One frustration for the left that lingers from the Tax Day tea parties is that when the liberal sock-puppet media did show up, they were only fishing for wackos to discredit the tea party movement and instead ended up providing everyone with laughable examples of their own bias.
Thanks though to the president for helping boost attendance on July 4th even higher than it would have otherwise been.

If these self annointed leaders of the tea party movement start willy nilly making declarations on the behalf of attendees…not good.
I would caution them two things:
1. You do not speak for everyone. If you are going to actually meeet with him speak for yourself do not claim you speak for the whole.
2. By meeting with obambi on these very narrow issues, which are HIS priorities for the next 100 days, like it or not you tacitly indicate what the tea parties were protesting are resolved issues lets move on to this now.

Just to be clear, I am making no judgments as to the veracity or usefulness of Gallup’s numbers, or the validity of Obama’s approval ratings as compared to other presidents. I am just pointing out I have no clue where the Washington Times purports to get their figure that they use as their basis.

I wonder that myself. If someone has formed a coalition without the backing of the people who ARE the grass roots, then they are certainly assuming a lot, aren’t they? Like, who asked them to be our voice? And who needs them? This is almost like stealing a trademark or something. I resent it.

I am just highly suspicious of anyone who presumes to speak for the tea parties. There are a lot of folks who would do that, and would screw things up. Kinda like politicians trying to horn in. It is going to be hard to keep the movement “pure”, but we have to keep trying.

I’m kinda creeped out too. The website makes it look like they are a well-organized, up and running group that speaks for the tea parties. Who gave them that authority?? I definitely think Michelle needs to check into this group and find out where they came from and what their plans are. They may just be a harmless group who thinks they are doing a job for the tea parties. It is a fact that there was a lot of networking being done at the rallies, and maybe someone just picked up the ball and ran with it. It is worse than that. All the wrong incentives are in place. It becomes largely a monopoly system, with all the bad stuff that entails, but with the added feature that even a monopoly enterprise is more responsive to consumers than a govt. bureaucracy.

I don’t know the law of Illinois, but I would think they have causes of action for slander and libel that are not too unlike my jurisdiction. There are also causes for using people’s images or words without their permission, along privacy lines.
There are Federal statutes that have parallels, and that would allow people in other states to file against him.
An injunction is a court order that prohibits or commands conduct. In this case, he could be ordered by a court to immediately take down his web-site pending the outcome of a law suit.
Some of the causes I mention, and virtually any I can think of from my jurisdiction, are weak on these facts. Sometimes that doesn’t matter in practical terms. If he can’t afford a defense, you win. That can be an example of a “good” frivolous law suit.

The strength of the tea party movement is in its lack of a specific leader and its appeal to regular tax-paying folks. Its different from a grass roots movement in that it does not come from ‘everyman’, which includes people on the dole and their enablers.
Self-appointed leaders need not apply.
