Frugal Shoe Friday!
We’ve been having gentle fun on Twitter with the story of Michelle Obama’s $540 suede and patent sneakers.
Just search #shoefriday for a taste of what we’re wearing.
What’s on your feet today?
I’ve got $50 Banana Republic flats, which I thought were a splurge until I saw the other Michelle’s footwear. Usually wearing my ratty old New Balance sneakers, but have to leave the house today:

I don’t begrudge Michelle Obama’s fashion choices. The point is that she begrudges so many other Americans’ choices in how they earn their money. Will have more to say about that later. But for now: Happy Frugal Shoe Friday!

I think most of us buy what we can afford. I’m happy with my $100 gym shoes with $50 orthotics. I’m able to stand for 8 hrs. at work, in spite of wide feet & bunions, without suffering foot pain half-way through my shift. A good pair of Dexters cost me about $60, eight years ago. Most of the time, you get what you pay for. MO paid for that status symbol, darn it, and it’s getting her mug plastered everywhere. I think she more than got her money’s worth.
Wearing low heeled black sandals from Baker’s Shoes that probably cost $30 new and I’ve had them for many years,
My favorite shoes are Sesto Meucci woven leather. Holding onto my old ones until they fall apart.
I actually swear by my Berkinstocks. They take a beating and are worth the 65-110 USD that you pay for them. Plus, they’re the only shoes that my size 9 feet perfectly. They’re made in Germany but I would never ship them back there to be repaired.
I just put my two pairs of Berks in for repair so they can feel like new. I wonder if Michelle Obama knows what a cobbler is, or is she like many Americans who buy shoes for status (see some of the hideous shoes that some Hollywood starlets wear) but don’t know what to do with them when they wear out.
Let’s not participate in the Recession and keep our shoes like new. Visit your local cobbler (shoe repair shop) today!!!
self-edit:
Ughhh… it’s fill in the blank night.

I cannot tell you how amazed I am to hear this. Widely recognized as the International Shoe of the Hippie, I would expect you (just based on your posts and things you’ve expressed) to eschew them just based on that association. I’m not even being insulting — really — I just was genuinely surprised to read this. I think shoes are shoes and who cares, but I genuinely would never have imagined you wearing something so inextricably linked to Dead Heads, tree huggers and the like.
This might be the only thing in the entire world we agree on. It dawned on me about three years ago that, duh, I could actually have my shoes repaired at the fraction of the cost of buying a new pair — and support a local business at the same time. Just makes sense to do, and it’s nice to have a favorite pair back instead of breaking in a new one.
When will Someone say “look the emperor is wearing no clothes”?
Two words: yard sale
Every summer I buy about 4-5 pairs of Nike seconds (barely perceptable flaws) from a guy at a flea market for about $50 total.
Peach or Cherry?
That reminds me, some Hollywood actor dropped out and went to Italy for a few years to make shoes. Kind of cool. I think he’s back acting though, but I bet he has nice shoes.
This clearly violates the Terms of Use.
I have 3 pairs of Starburys, all for $8.95 per pair and the Starburys are really cool, especially the white hightop basketball shoes. I have also have the classic adidas Stan Smith tennis shoes, great for walking around and for trainers also, a little weak for hard court serious tennis however, but stylish and great for about $50.00.
If you want to be a true hipster, a la John Legend, you can get a pair of Golas for about $80.00. The type of Golas that John Legend wears during his concerts go for about $85.00.
Michelle —- don’t photograph your feet like that…… now I need to take a cold shower…….
Sigh… I don’t know what I find more amusing- that hippies are permanently tied to Birkenstocks or that you think that only one singular type of person wears them. I’ll wear anything that’s comfortable and doesn’t give me corns or permanent calluses on my feet. I bought a pair of Italian made clogs and the suckers will just not BREAK IN!!! So frustrating. Birks don’t really have that problem.
And, by the by, I grew up in a college town known for it’s hippier days and communes and the hippies weren’t just wearing Birks. Sometimes, they weren’t wearing shoes at all.
I think that anybody who’s budget conscious has already thought of this idea. I wear things until they’re ratty and get worn out. I mourned a plastic pair of Nike swim flip flops I’d owned for YEARS and had to throw them out because they broke in two places. I wish more people weren’t so quick to throw what are probably decent shoes/clothes out only to be replaced with what’s “in” or “hip.” What’s “old” will eventually be “new” again.
You are so bad!!!
I bet that actor can probably point out to a lot of his fellow thespians how overpriced and how temporarly hip their shoes actually are. He’d probably would make a killing just selling what is considered “used” by a Hollywood starlet these days.
I’m trying to reform honestly!!! It’s just that life isn’t nearly as much fun with the plain old frumpy flip flops I have right now (while I’m waiting for my Birks to get repaired). The Birks are luring me back to the dark side.
You got ripped off nyk.
Well, at least the ones on their Left Foot. It’s Daniel Day Lewis.
I’m generally wearing $39 New Balance sneakers. When I have to look dressed up, I’m wearing $120 Bostonians. I thought that was a bunch of money to pay for a dress shoe, but I guess not.
I’d wear cheaper shoes, but my foot is hard to fit. A size 9 4E doesn’t get made by everyone.
My most expense boots are my army boots. My WIFE however… I never did understand womens love affair with shoes.
Well on Saturday, I did have some really expensive boots on.
But never mind that they were my steel-toe work boots I bought back in 1991 when I was working for the Evil Empire of Halliburton.
Oh wait, this was from Friday. On Friday was the extremely expensive (in my mind) $40 pair of KSwiss. Yeah, that’s how I roll. Y’all can be jealous now.
30–we don’t have children, and we both work, so fortunately hubby really likes me to have the nice shoes.
Today I’m wearing a pair of Tod’s driving loafers. $500.00
It’s ‘casual day’ at work. I refuse to wear ‘tennis shoes’.
Now, back to jewelry…
She must have used her stimulus rebate check from last year for that. Instead of earrings. These are so much more practical.
What vsatt said.
