Frugal Shoe Friday!
We’ve been having gentle fun on Twitter with the story of Michelle Obama’s $540 suede and patent sneakers.
Just search #shoefriday for a taste of what we’re wearing.
What’s on your feet today?
I’ve got $50 Banana Republic flats, which I thought were a splurge until I saw the other Michelle’s footwear. Usually wearing my ratty old New Balance sneakers, but have to leave the house today:

I don’t begrudge Michelle Obama’s fashion choices. The point is that she begrudges so many other Americans’ choices in how they earn their money. Will have more to say about that later. But for now: Happy Frugal Shoe Friday!

Do as I say! Not as I do!
A pair of shoes bought at my husbands place of work, a second hand store for 50 cents. Fit fine
It’s the same logic as last week, “four legs were good; two legs are bad” to this week when “four legs are good; two legs are better.”
Wearing flip-flops…the staple of SoCal footwear!
I’m usually barefoot, the advantage of being home most of the time, but if I go out I either wear sandals or a pair of Propet walking shoes I picked up on sale for $30.
For $540 those sneakers had better be giving me a pedicure and a foot rub whilst I’m walking.
$89 Asics DS Trainer-14′s
Very light. Great for road running.
I could have gone for the Michelle O version. Red and Black Suede and Leather combo for $540, but I’m just not as rich as she is.
I’m wearing a pair of casual loafers from Walmart that cost less than twenty bucks! I wear them everyday. Love’m!
Sometimes I wear my five year old New Balance sneakers. Nifty!
I have a couple of pair of casuals from Land’s End. I haven’t warmed up to them yet.
Deck shoes, from e-Bay, in some need of repair. Less than $35.00.
I wear Ropers with my “law suits” in court. Less than $100.00.
Precisely! Hypocrisy is at home with secular “progressives”. Her husband’s Treasury Department should confiscate her shoes and send them to a Guatemala orphanage.
$22 casual shoes from the Stuff Mart. I’m cheap. With a dozen children, I have to be.
My car cost $400.
Same here
Remember…
Shellie thought you could not buy a decent pair of ear rings for the $600 Bush stimulus give-a-way…
She’s an elitist. A rich, radical Marxist.
Today I am wearing shoes that are about 5 years old from Payless, I am guessing they were probably between 15.99 and 20.99. But 97% of my shoes regardless of where they come from are are under $40. I shop sales and the clearance rack because I love shoes but want to have money to spend elsewhere too!
No shoes today – working in the home office instead of jetting around the globe. But the shoes I wear most often cost under $200.
We are glad she feels good about America now that she has shoes.
I’m sporting Redwings. $210, Steel toed, shanked and anti-slip. Our American Comrades know how to make em.
They last forever, or until my boxer decides he needs a new chew toy.
On sale $85 Merrells walking shoe very airy and comfortable.
Steve Madden sneakers. I think they retailed for about $60, but got them from a store going out of business and paid around $10. I have arthritis in my feet and hands. These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.
Tommy Hilfiger “sneaker mules” that cost about $75
new but are at least 6 years old because I trade off
between 2 pair. When I am home during the summer
I wear crocs flipflops when I can find a 5 in them. They cost about $30 but last and last.
If I paid that much for shoes, they would need to last
a lifetime for me to justify the cost to myself.
Hypocrisy of the Left!
Way better than Nike IMHO.
I have on – sorry – Italian driving shoes. Hey they were on sale and very comfy. Not these of course…
At the moment, I’m barefoot, since I’m at home. I wear either a re-soled and re-heeled pair of $60 loafers or a five-year-old pair of Reeboks. I did spend $1 on some new tasty white shoelaces recently though. I quit paying a lot of money for shoes when I quit working full time and had somewhere to wear them. I can sit here in my underwear and type, and, NO, I am NOT in my mother’s basement. I pay the rent. Michelle Obama’s shoes would almost cover my rent for one month. Must be nice livin’ in the public housing big house on the man’s dime. More to spend on shoes and couture, obviously.
Bare foot now and most of the time. Earlier shopping sandles from wally world for less than $15.00. I don’t think in my entire life I have paid over $75.00 for a pair of shoes.
L
Right now, I’m wearing steel-toed work boots my employer bought for me.
I can think of a lot of things I could spend $500 bucks on besides shoes. Saddle bags for my Sportster. We could have a nice vacation for $500 bucks.
If I spent $500 for shoes, I’d probably be sleeping on them for the next week.
Um, I’m wearing $300.00 Stuart Weitzman high heels.
But, I’m at work.
I paid for ‘em.
I am wearing some Lands End Outlet black suede clodhoppers. Bought them on sale years ago & still going strong. Very comfy too. I wear shoes until they look too ratty to wear.
$12 GAP Outlet sneakers. So comfortable and cool.
A $300 pair of Allen Edmonds were actually a great investment. By far the most durable and comfortable dress shoe I have ever owned. And best looking.
Sometimes you do have to pay for quality.
Cruise411.com. Trust me on this. Upper deck fabulous stateroom, 5-night Bahama cruise from Jacksonville for around $700 after tax/tag/title/destination/port/whatever charges. Money well spent!
November can’t come soon enough. That’s when my darling bride and I go away for our 25th anniversary. The older three will watch the younger nine, and we’re out!
I’m wearing a two-year-old pair of New Balance sneakers.
Oh, how the beautiful people live.
Sandals that I got for $6.99 at Good Will like 3 years ago.
I have one other pair of shoes I wear in the winter, and then I wear these all summer. I just hate shopping.
Sometimes, though, I do wonder if my coworkers notice that I wear the same shoes every day.
Wearing my not quite old, not quite ratty New Balance sneakers.
They just keep fitting tighter and tighter into that hypocritical, elitist mold, don’t they?
Give them the power and let them have the money and wear what they want, but tell everyone else they have to give up their money for the good of others and tell executives that they can’t earn past a certain amount.
Hey, when you’re as important as the vice president of community relations, a job so important that when Madame O left, she could not be replaced, you can spend whatever you want on shoes. As an aside, I’m sure it was pure coincidence that her salary tripled when Barry became a State Senator. A million dollars every three years is what most people make doing very important work, right?
You’re right about that. The more expensive, and well made, two pair of Red Wing boots I purchased over 20 years ago are, with good care, are still servicable. And I have to use more expensive New Balance shoes for running because my feet do not care for any other brand
As for flip-flops. Okay for home, beach and poolside, but anywhere else, not so much….even in SoCal.
Year-and-a-half-old Reeboks ($50), since it’s Casual Friday. I think I’ll take start taking the money I save on footwear and putting it away for my 2010 donations.
By the way, folks, 30 comments and no Imelda Marcos references?
Michele Obama – Arrogance at its best!
$540.00 for a pair of shoes? She could have bought a new pair for that!
Today I was in Sam’s Club and bought a pair of DFSPORT sneakers for 18 bucks. These are the lightest, comfiest shoes I’ve ever worn!
(But I did buy a pair of Danskos on Ebay once for $90–retailed for $145!)
$35 New Balance sneakers…….one of the few you can get in EEEE width……I’m a diabetic and my feet never bother me when I wear these shoes.
I still have my second pair of Reeboks I bought at half price with the purchase of the first pair at full price at $35. Outlet malls, good prices when you can get’em.
Mine are 2 years old and counting. The only thing to wear here in SoFl. Forgot I was wearing them once when I had to be at a finance meeting. They’re that good.
When not wearing my redwings (workboots) I will be found wearing Puma sneakers the ones called Clyde with the basket sole, been wearing this brand since 1970!!
she has to be a role model for the black welfare class. grade schoolers are expecting air jordan’s , and high schoolers are killing people for their big buck shoes. we neeeeeed that role model.
Ah, chap; now see? We agree! My Stuart Weitzmans are some of my cheaper shoes–I also have Hermes, YSL, Ferragamo & Claudia Ciuti.
Have you tried Ferragamo or Bally for men?
Totes-Isotoners: Christmas gift.
Ten+ years old: Still comfortable.
Black: But highlighted with dog hair.

Enchanting $540 suede and patent sneakers: Saving and/or creating jobs.
Three-year-old Timberlands for the children’s department at Nordstroms. I think I spent about $50, and I wear them approximately 6 days/week. I’ve gone through three sets of shoelaces thus far. Most of the tread is worn off, but that’s okay — it’s easier to clean the mud (and worse) off the bottoms.
Er, FROM the children’s department. (A children’s size 4 is equivalent to a women’s size 6, so if you have smallish feet and can’t find shoes you like, check out the children’s department.)
WOW…the most I ever spent on a pair of shoes is $98…and that was for my daughters wedding. I am wearing flip flops today purchased from Land’s End for $14.99 (causal Friday)
I also, and still have, a pair of Ho Chi Minh sandals I bought at a swapmeet in 71. I actuall still have tread on them.
Sketcher sports, size 11. Cost about 35 bucks, I guess. Wear em everyday.
CJ…I buy little girls shoes too. I wear a womens size 5-51/2 depending on brand.
Oh, Bally – I thought you said Ballet.
Spacey, you have good taste in shoes. AlohaGal swears by Weitzman and Taran Rose, but she pays for them herself.
I had a pair of those stillontheroad. I just threw them out last year. I bought them in 1976 and I wore a hole threw them.
Hello Kitty?
Ha….no AlohaGuy…but I did get a pair of rubber boots with little pink doggy bones and dalmations on them to work in my garden.
New Balance is the only brand of tennies that I can find in stores that fit my apparently wide feet. I found a comfy pair of brown loafers on clearance for ten or fifteen bucks a couple of years ago and will probably wear them until my socks touch the pavement. I might even wear them a while after that.
Wide feet and holey shoes—oh laaadies, I’m avaaailable…
$99 pair of UGGs…I’m in the mountains, OK?
$30 dollar desert camo Vans slip-ons for me. <3
You guys with foot problems should try Ropers.
I know it sounds counter-intuitive…wearing boots…
but mine are some of the most comfortable things I’ve ever worn. The leather is like calf-skin, and conform to my feet.
Look cool, too…
Personally these are the ugliest shoe I have ever seen $540 or not I wouldn’t pay $1 for them.
I have spent a couple of hundred for work shoes and usually get BB’s on sale for the gym but these????? YUK
http://mtcave.blogspot.com/2009/05/michelle-obama-in-recession-shoes-540.html
barefoot right now but if I have to go out one of my designer shoes from the thrift store-all under 5 dollars. My most expensive is a great pair of boots for my EMS job that my employer bought– about $200 — after my ankle was beautifully lacerated at a wreck.
I meant NB’s new balance
A well broken in pair of Margaritaville saddleshoe loafers purchased during a republican administration.
Comfort and style points to the gang from the rightwing.
Most of my shoe money goes into keeping up with my children’s growing feet!
However, my grandmother always said to splurge on your feet – she was not rich but when it came to buying shoes she didn’t skimp. But I browse the sale section on some of the online sites like 6pm.com, Amazon, Zappos, etc. Good way to get good shoes cheap if you don’t mind not wearing the most up-to-minute styles.
Telecommuting today, so just padding around in my socks! I think I’m doing more to reduce my carbon footprint than Obam-uh, dontcha think
Wow, those are ugly. I was expecting something nice…
I wear size 4B – retailers let the best go for pennies on the dollar just to get rid of them. Picked up a pair of Bally golfshoes last year off Overstock for $11 (with free shipping). I have over 50 pr. of shoes and still don’t have $540 invested in the whole lot. If it’s over $15 I can wait for further markdowns.
TJMaxx/Ross/Nordstroms/Neiman Marcus, my homes away from home!
I know huh!
Well you know the Obama motto:
What’s good for me not for thee!
Ooo…I guess Walmart is low class for you, right…? hypocrite Malkin.
Manufactured, no doubt, in a country with no labor unions, no child labor laws, and no S.I.T.E.S. regulation enforcement? I wonder what those pair of shoes carbon footprint is?
It’s for the children…
From imported petroleum?
It’s great to have a First Family who is so “green” conscious!
Wow! I thought I splurged right after Christmas when I bought 2 pairs of athletic shoes for $75 total!
I guess the shoes I bought just deprived some poor soul of two pair of shoes so I must be cruel and heartless. After all Michelle Obama only bought one pair of shoes.
Nike Outlet sneakers – $24.99 IIRC. They replaced New Balance shoes that were about 3 times as much, but probably lasted 5 years. And I wear them all the time.
A pair of pug-ugly Clarks sandals that, for me, were expensive ($85 + tax). I bought them in a moment of weakness the day after criss-crossing campus a zillion times on a conference event day and was barely able to limp to by car after I finished for the day. The next morning, my feet were very sore and so I gave in to comfort (very comfortable sandals).
I am wearing some old Reeboks. $20 on sale a few years ago. They are comfy and well-broken in. I, too, am in the mountains, so these serve as my work, grocery-shopping, and just kickin-around shoes. No heels up here – would get hurt on the snow and ice.
I have tried cheaper shoes from Walmart, but the soles would peel off, and the material would crack… They were “imported” all right, but not from Italy or Spain.
I’m sitting at my desk at work wearing a $12 of loafers from Wal-Mart. The most expensive pair of shoes I own are the $100 Nikes I bought a few weeks ago for working out. I got tired of my right foot rolling, causing ankle sprains, so the Nikes were recommended to me for stability.
And $540 for those ugly pieces of crap? I wouldn’t pay $5.40 for those.
Asics for the first time…replaced a few years old pair of nikes..
No you don’t. Maybe for dress shoes, which I dispise.
I have $6 pair of WalMart Croc knockoffs. Three years later and they’re still good to go. Cured my plantar fascitis too.
I wince at paying $20 for a pair of comfortable flip-flops…
Yeah, but who is paying for her quality purchase?
Chappy will defend any ourtrageous thing fellow leftards do. He is still convinced Rush Limbaugh set up Teddy Kennedy at Chappaquiddick back in 1969…
I wonder if she will wear them while she putters around for photo-ops in her make believe White House farm?
No matter what a lawyer wears – aren’t they all essentially Sharkskin?
Wow, me too! $49.95 is under $200!
Nunn Bush Camerons for work… a black pair and a brown pair. Very comfy.
I have gotten some great shoes at DSW –you can even find high end designers like Cole Hahn, Stuart Weitzman, etc. but you have to keep looking. Right now wearing a fun pair of black suede fabric Skechers with the criss crossy straps and little gold birds embroidered on them. $29!! I LOVE DSW.
Had to resole mine but, that leather conformed to me so well…Red Wings are an American company with GREAT products. Almost bought a pair of steel-toe wingtips on sale from them.
You are a dolt.
I never said anything about MO’s shoes. I don’t have a bloody clue or opinion about them. I just said that sometimes you get what you pay for. I find this to be true when it comes to men’s dress shoes.
Michelle, nice shoes, but…you left the house in denim??? What were you thinking? Might as well have worn the ratty sneakers!!! LOL, jk, unless I’m headed to the office or church I DO wear the ratty sneakers…and the jeans.
Michelle O can spend so much on shoes because of the money she saves on charitable giving.
I think I need a new pair of shoes. Everyday since January 20, I have clicked my ruby slippers three times and said “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.”
It’s not working.
notice a common thread in the comments here? Ben Franklin would be proud of us. While politicians spend $100,000 for toilets and $540 for shoes — we need more tightwads running the gov’t(-:
Are you wearing a blue and white checkered dress while doing so?
That’s important.
If you have wide feet (I do) and you’re a woman, you can also try Ryka.
They’re about $50 to $100 depending on the model but they’re great for working out.
My Doc Martens boots are about 10 yrs. old and still going strong. Of course, I bought those at a salvage store (Marden’s) for $25 instead of the $150 they were going for at the time.
I wouldn’t mind spending good money on a pair of quality shoes but my feet are wide and heels don’t usually fit.
I’m also not going around telling everyone else they should tighten their belts and be willing to give their money to the govt.
Is that the voice of experience, Chaps…?!?!?
I am wearing a pair of financially responsible pair of $18 Airwalk tennis shoes from Payless Shoe Source. Aren’t you glad you’re niggardly with your money, don’t you wish politicians were too?
GSP
“This is Sparta!”
Thought question:
How large a fraction of her average family charitable contribution does Shellie’s $540 fly sneakers represent?
How large a fraction of your average family charitable contribution does your most expensive pair of footwear represent?
come on guys she has her own money…you know from that super important hospital job. you know the one that disappeared after she left.
she deserved every cent of that $317k a year cushy pay off i mean job.
Gosh, this pair of Van’s was purchased after I graduated college in 2003. A pair of Vans “walking” shoes – approximately $39.99 at Kohl’s, if I’m not too mistaken.
No, Chappy, you are a dolt. We aren’t talking about men’s dress shows. MO spent $540 on a pair of women’s sneakers!
But thanks for proving my point. Nothing you and your leftard buddies do bothers you. It must be difficult for you to come here and have to deal with “commoners” like us…
Nothing like Rockports. $100 or less, last for a year or two, and are majorly comfy.
But, hey, with the coming taxes, we should all learn to be like hobbits, grow hair on our feet and go barefoot.
Retard, maybe you missed the 20 or so comments before mine and the 50 or so comments after mine from all the other posters talking about their choice of footwear.
Don’t be a tool just because you carry a torch for me.
D’oh…. Nice catch Chap.
Heading to the Dress Barn and getting my hair braided just in case.
Oh yes, the little black dog…
You’re a lifesaver! Thanks!
My humans wear mostly New Balance and Asic track shoes, although the female has a closet full of bargains. They make great chew-toys.
Mew
