Frugal Shoe Friday!

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 1, 2009 01:21 PM

We’ve been having gentle fun on Twitter with the story of Michelle Obama’s $540 suede and patent sneakers.

Just search #shoefriday for a taste of what we’re wearing.

What’s on your feet today?

I’ve got $50 Banana Republic flats, which I thought were a splurge until I saw the other Michelle’s footwear. Usually wearing my ratty old New Balance sneakers, but have to leave the house today:

I don’t begrudge Michelle Obama’s fashion choices. The point is that she begrudges so many other Americans’ choices in how they earn their money. Will have more to say about that later. But for now: Happy Frugal Shoe Friday!

Lorie Byrd weighs in.

Rick at Brutally Honest: “For the first time in her life, MichelleO is proud of…her shoes.”

A reminder of how Obama played the class card against John McCain with the “Seven Houses” bash:

And a reminder about the furor over McCain’s $520 Italian loafers.

I get my shoes at Walmart. I wear sandals during the warm weather and dress boots when it’s cold. Both under $20. Last week we took our kids to the park. There was a box of running shoes with a free sign. My husband took several. Free works! Personally, I don’t like wearing shoes. I prefer to go barefoot or in socks.

I have THREE pairs of shoes. A pair of New Balance tennies that are about four years old, Payless Airwalk sandals, $10 on sale, and some slip on sandals that were also from Payless. I can’t imagine spending $540 on shoes, but if it’s HER money, it’s none of my business.

Her husband needs to stop spending all of MY money before I even earn it.

So when Marbury became Starbury, earning $17 million a year, he said “enough” — he would come out with a line of sneakers that sell for less than $15. He teamed with Steve & Barry’s University Sportswear, a national chain with 200 stores, and came out with the Starbury line of sneakers, hats and jerseys. Nothing sells for more than $14.98.

We all have choices on where to place or spend what disposable income we have. The poster that mentioned how frugal most of us are as opposed to the spending of those attempting to tell us how/when/how much we ‘should be’ spending is telling. Or, what bad kids we are because we find making our own decisions desirable over someone else telling us what to do.

I’d rather have one good outfit than an entire closet of poor quality stuff. That’s just me. But, then I still have a dress coat I’ve worn for 20 years – and bought that on clearance at Macy’s. It’s not what you earn but what you keep.

I’ve always liked nice things but there was a time when I couldn’t even think of owning any of it. Growing up in abject poverty and such. Not every that own is designer or premier designer. the trick is to own the stuff and not let it own you.

We’re growing tomatoes and peppers. We’ll transplant them to the yard later this month. My husband has turned part of my kitchen into his very own laboratory.

All the best with the veggies.

For the record, paying $50 for flats — at Banana Republic, to boot — that you can get for $5 at most chains isn’t anything to gloat about — at least not where an attempt to win a contest in frugality is concerned.

NYK, our host wasn’t boasting about frugality when she mentioned her shoes cost $50. She said she considered that a splurge at the time, but now it seems pretty frugal compared to $540. You might try reading what she actually writes before you go spouting off.

If MO wants to spend over $500 for a pair of sneakers, yeah it’s her money and her right. But it was pretty insensitive and tone-deaf to wear those shoes while volunteering at a food bank. She could have gone with something more non-descript that wouldn’t have distracted from the good cause she was supporting. Besides, if you’re going to pay that kind of money for shoes, for heaven’s sake pick some that aren’t so butt-ugly. And while you’re at it, invest in some better tailored pants and sweaters that don’t look like they’re busting at the seams.

I do not begrudge MO her expensive shoes. If she earned the money to pay for them, and this is how she wants to spend the money that SHE earned, then fine. It is the hypocrisy that makes it so annoying. Just like John Edward’s $400 haircuts. I had no problem with that…just his blatant double standard! By the way, I also wear New Balance sneakers – $49.99, and CROCS around the house. My dressy shoes are usually purchased at the shoe warehouse in Burnsville and run anywhere from 29.99-49.99. I have only the basic colors to go with everything. I did splurge twice on fancy colored shoes…my two daughter’s weddings, where I had to match with my outfit for the very special occasions. I guess I must have also splurged for my own wedding shoes, but since that was 40 years ago, they probably cost Five Bucks.

Nice. Equivocations are such a novelty around here. BTW, at least it wasn’t a campaign promise he had made with no long-term intentions of keeping, like a 95% tax break for all Americans (Dems say it’s not going to happen, according to Politico) or all US troops out of Iraq in 16 months (the NYT says 45-50,000 will remain there indefinitely).

If this and the flyover of my city is what you guys are steaming over these days (and you guys spend more time talking about that than ANYONE actually living in NYC does), we (the opposition, I mean) are in good shape.

By any chance, do you work for the NYT? The last person to utter such an inane generality was a Times’ female columnist who couldn’t understand how Nixon won – when no one she knew voted for him.

I don’t get what all the fuss is about (especially on a site where John McCain’s $520 Ferragamos got nary a (cloaked) criticism — in the midst of a campaign where he was constantly calling his opponent an “elitist”).

McCain’s age and the fact that he experienced actual torture on this country’s behalf, more than earned him the right to wear whatever he wants. And be honest, Obama’s youthful arrogance makes him an elitist, not his choices in food and fashion.

I think most of us buy what we can afford. I’m happy with my $100 gym shoes with $50 orthotics. Most of the time, you get what you pay for. MO paid for that status symbol, darn it, and it’s getting her mug plastered everywhere. I think she more than got her money’s worth.

Widely recognized as the International Shoe of the Hippie, I would expect you (just based on your posts and things you’ve expressed) to eschew them just based on that association. I’m not even being insulting — really — I just was genuinely surprised to read this. I think shoes are shoes and who cares, but I genuinely would never have imagined you wearing something so inextricably linked to Dead Heads, tree huggers and the like.

This might be the only thing in the entire world we agree on. It dawned on me about three years ago that, duh, I could actually have my shoes repaired at the fraction of the cost of buying a new pair — and support a local business at the same time. Just makes sense to do, and it’s nice to have a favorite pair back instead of breaking in a new one.
