What George Will missed: The decrepit state of the California GOP
George Will’s latest column on the sagging economy of California and the upcoming slate of massive tax-hike initiatives on the ballot only scratches the surface of what’s rotten in the formerly Golden State.
The state GOP is a basket case. The party establishment epitomizes everything that is wrong with the Republican Party nationally: Cronyism, arrogance, waste, and leadership out of touch with its base.
I reported on how grass-roots conservatives greeted California GOP chairman Ron Nehring with boos and heckles of “Go Home!” and “Throw Them Out!” at the Sacramento Tea Party on April 15. Tea Party organizer Mark Meckler publicly called out Nehring for the party’s waffling on the tax propositions. Nehring attempted to coopt the Tea Party movement for the GOP’s purposes. The tax revolters were having none of it. Here’s the vid:
The party finally got a clue and voted to oppose the initiatives — but only after dumping $650,000 into Gov. Arnold Schwarzengger’s coffers to crusade for the proposals, namely Prop. 1A — the $16 billion in “temporary tax hikes” disguised as a spending cap measure.
Yeah, you read that right. They forked over $650,000 in party money to help Schwarzengger pass $16 billion in tax hikes.
You know what that brand is? FAIL.
Grass-roots activists have watched state GOP chairman Ron Nehring drive the party into the ground — and spend their money doing it. Nehring is a protege of open-borders, credibility-undermining Grover Norquist. It was under Nehring’s watch that the California GOP hired Norquist’s friend, Michael Kamburowski, to serve as the California Republican Party’s chief operating officer in charge of the multimillion-dollar budget of the nation’s largest state Republican Party — despite being here illegally with no work visa or valid work permit.
The episode became the butt of late-night jokes, but neither Nehring nor Norquist suffered any consequences.
How can the state GOP call for fiscal restraint when its chairman cannot adopt it himself? GOP sources compiled the following expense reports on Nehring’s activities — and mind you, this is just a partial record of his frequent trips to D.C., visits to fancy hotels, and extravagant phone bills and rental car expenses. If he had something to show for it all, maybe it would be worth it. But what has he done? Flushed party dues down the toilet and the state GOP’s credibility and electoral prospects along with it:

I have no idea what you mean by “national leadership position”, but according to lifenews.com there are about 30-35 pro-life Democrats in Congress (numbers differ on a few sites I looked at). I wonder how that would compare to pro-choice Republicans.
Well, Chappy, most people with a clue would know that “national leadership position” would include the House and Senate leadership structure, DNC, and executive branh positions.
Maybe you’ll learn that by the time you finish your internship in Washington, DC…
And of course there are many, many pro-abortion Republicans. But, you would have to know how to google something to figure that out.

And of course I googled for Republican pro choicers. And they name some specific names. However, nowhere in the time I took to look did I find something that summarized just how many there were in Congress, as I was able to find with the Dem pro-lifers. If you were able to find this number be a dear and link to it.
In conclusion, don’t be a tool.

I live in suburban Maryland and I can tell you that the GOP is dead
both in Northern Virginia (where I was born) and Maryland. Our state right now has only a single GOP congressman and 7 Democrats. The Republican Party is suffering 
a serious shrinkage problem and the switch of hero Senator Specter to the Democratic Party is part of a trend that has obliterated GOP representation in the mid-Atlantic and up the East Coast til Québec. In these 10 states, there are just 10 GOP congressmen for a total of ~ 70 seats. With GOP becoming a shrinking entity, most Americans agree that this country is finally heading in the right direction. In close future we will have more powerful left leaning political parties (Social Democratic / Green) just like the German SPD / Die Grünen, the French PS / Les Verts and the Spanish PSOE / Los Verdes).

What’s the problem in Mexifornia? I thought that illegal aliens were enriching their society. Every liberal run government in this country is corrupt and going bankrupt. They also can brag on having the highest crime rates in the country. Next up, is the Federal Government. Bankruptcy is inevitable.

It’s hard to tell the difference these days between someone who claims to be a Republican and someone who is a liberal. They all seem to run their district, city, state, etc with a lack of conservative principles and as if they are free to spend other peoples’ money as they see fit and then come back whinging for more.
Yes, bankruptcy is inevitable and there is a pattern but no one who matters is paying attention.

You are not the only one to see the pattern. I suspect the government may not technically go bankrupt but rather choose to monetize the debt and engage in hyperinflation instead.

When are republicans going to realize that our party has been taken over from within by Rockefeller Elitists. The mission of these people is to destroy the conservative movement and the RNC.
People like John McCain,Lyndsey Graham, Mel Martinez,Arlen Specter were instrumental in losing the 2008 election by alienating conservatives with their politically correct positions on Immigration, Gay Rights and Abortion to name a few.
Real conservative voters have no where to go other than third parties which have no chance in hell of winning an election under the current system.
We need to throw all the liberal leadership out of the party including their minions if we ever want to start winning elections again.
Arnold Schwarzengger was never a conservative but another con artist that fooled people into voting him into office with Presidential aspirations.
Rush Limbaugh tried to warn California voters before he ran for office but as usual the CA RNC rammed him down our throats just like they did with McCain.
McCain was not the choice of conservatives but the elite running the party.
Until we purge the RNC of liberals we will never win another election.

This is one of the laughable ironies about Specter’s defection! He claims the GOP is “too far right” when in fact the GOP is racing the Democrats to the left!
The Rockefeller Republicans OWN the party apparatus and I don’t think they are going to invite a bunch of red-neck conservatives in to shape things to our liking.

It seems that you’re ascribing an exception that should also exist in the GOP which is the existence of “pro-choice” Republicans. If this is the case, how many “pro-choice” Republicans voted WITH the party on “pro-life” initiaties? I’m just curious.
If you’re including Sen. Casey on that list of “pro-life” Dems, I’d strike him off your list because he’s a “pro-lifer” in name only. He’s voted with his party at least on one pro-choice legislation that I know of.
I snicker every time I hear how Casey is some moderate Dem in “pro-life” clothing. He’s a convenient “pro-lifer” when he needs to win an election until he has to go back to the Senate and cave on social issues he’s supposedly for or against.

No, No, No! Don’t disturb Chappy with facts! There must have been OODLES of Pro-life democrats addressing the DNC over the past four years. Uh, there was Al Gore, no, not really pro-life was he? Then there was Bill “safe, legal and rare” Clinton, no, not him either. Zell Miller! Oh, that’s right he addressed the GOP convention because the Dems ran him out of the party.

Sad but true
