What George Will missed: The decrepit state of the California GOP

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 4, 2009 02:21 PM

George Will’s latest column on the sagging economy of California and the upcoming slate of massive tax-hike initiatives on the ballot only scratches the surface of what’s rotten in the formerly Golden State.

The state GOP is a basket case. The party establishment epitomizes everything that is wrong with the Republican Party nationally: Cronyism, arrogance, waste, and leadership out of touch with its base.

I reported on how grass-roots conservatives greeted California GOP chairman Ron Nehring with boos and heckles of “Go Home!” and “Throw Them Out!” at the Sacramento Tea Party on April 15. Tea Party organizer Mark Meckler publicly called out Nehring for the party’s waffling on the tax propositions. Nehring attempted to coopt the Tea Party movement for the GOP’s purposes. The tax revolters were having none of it. Here’s the vid:

The party finally got a clue and voted to oppose the initiatives — but only after dumping $650,000 into Gov. Arnold Schwarzengger’s coffers to crusade for the proposals, namely Prop. 1A — the $16 billion in “temporary tax hikes” disguised as a spending cap measure.

Yeah, you read that right. They forked over $650,000 in party money to help Schwarzengger pass $16 billion in tax hikes.

You know what that brand is? FAIL.

Grass-roots activists have watched state GOP chairman Ron Nehring drive the party into the ground — and spend their money doing it. Nehring is a protege of open-borders, credibility-undermining Grover Norquist. It was under Nehring’s watch that the California GOP hired Norquist’s friend, Michael Kamburowski, to serve as the California Republican Party’s chief operating officer in charge of the multimillion-dollar budget of the nation’s largest state Republican Party — despite being here illegally with no work visa or valid work permit.

The episode became the butt of late-night jokes, but neither Nehring nor Norquist suffered any consequences.

How can the state GOP call for fiscal restraint when its chairman cannot adopt it himself? GOP sources compiled the following expense reports on Nehring’s activities — and mind you, this is just a partial record of his frequent trips to D.C., visits to fancy hotels, and extravagant phone bills and rental car expenses. If he had something to show for it all, maybe it would be worth it. But what has he done? Flushed party dues down the toilet and the state GOP’s credibility and electoral prospects along with it:

It is the only ballot measure with a majority and in fact 70% support it. By their failure to endorse it they are telling the public they are the same as the democrats.

Second, while the CRP finally endorsed a no vote, the Republican Governor, Republican Assembly leader and Republican Leader Senate Republican endorsed a Yes vote.

What I can not believe is why the CRP have not voted these people out of the leadership positions they have in the CRP, Assembly and Senate and until they do there is going to be no hope for the CRP.

George Will’s column was timely, but also left out another critical point in his analysis regarding California’s economy. How has the “Golden State” gotten into the shape it’s in?

Yes, we have more than our fair share of RINO’s, but that’s not the core of the problem. The core is unfettered illegal immigration, aided in part by our conservative hero, Ronald Reagan’s boondoggle when he signed the Amnesty Bill…that opened the floodgates.

Reagan should have known…trusting liberals is not the most intelligent thing a right-thinking person can do. Our conservative icon gave the liberals the benefit of the doubt, and his trust…and got burned for it.

With the state already heavily Democratic, and inundated with closet socialists, a realist could have predicted what was to come:

New, and expanded social programs were created to take care of all the illegal migrant workers, their family members, and others opened the flooded into California to take advantage of all the freebies.

When you come right down to it, this was and is the greatest cause for the California economic downfall. This immigrant population eventually flooded the public school system. “Free” health care for the same. Then came the necessary “bi-lingual” state publications, so that the I.A.’s could communicate more efficiently to get the state benefits, and so on, and so forth. All while not adding funds to the kitty via income tax. What ever happened to the idea of paying one’s fair share?

How was California ever going to be able to dole out benefits to these people without taking in off-setting capital? The liberal’s did what liberal’s always do…they took the easy way out, and raised taxes on everything. Nothing was off limits.

Fast forward to the present…California STILL has the largest outlay of cash for immigrant benefits in the nation. It has the highest personal income tax, business tax, and property tax rates in the nation. Approximately 30% of it’s prison population consists of illegal alien criminals. It leads the nation in restrictive environmental laws. It also has the largest deficit in the nation. Businesses are leaving the state en mass.

California has rules and regulations that are the most restrictive in the nation, from conservation to gun rights to free speech. This “bleeding heart” mentality has changed this once great state into a failed social experiment. Yet, progressives don’t think they’ve done enough! It will never be enough, as far as they are concerned.

This is the model the liberal progressives are using to re-shape America. It is grandiose, corrupt, based on emotion not science, and is costly.

Unfortunately, California’s gift to the rest of America is incompetent, foolish, power hungry, ignorant elitists, who ARE above the laws they pretend to enforce. Thank you,Barbara Boxer, Jane Harmon, Diane Feinstein, the Sanchez sisters, George Miller, Nostril-damus, Nancy Pelosi, and of course, the Nuevo-Mexicanas racists now in the Obama Administration.

Can you see what’s in store for you, America? It is happening now in Washington, D.C. All Your rights are under assault, and are in jeopardy. One party, one ideology is steering this country towards oblivion. We must unite, and rid ourselves of this “progressive” cancer, before it’s too late.

“Those who forget the lessons of history, are doomed to repeat it.”

Abel Maldonado (R) was the final vote that passed the last budget (tax increase). As his reward (bribe) for caving in he got Prop 1F.

Prop 1F is fine, but some of us don’t want to reward those that sell us out on tax increases that cost us tens of billions of dollars.

Finally, for once, this time, really, really, really the Democrats are going to have to cut at least $14 billion from the budget. The only way to make cuts of that size is by massively cutting social programs. State-funded welfare-for-life, paid for with state funds, is going to have to go. One-fifth of this state is on Medicaid (Medi-Cal here). Schools get one half of the general fund every year right off the top and STILL the teacher lobby screams it’s not enough.

Until Sacramento ever learns to be fiscally responsible and that it can’t continue to lavishly spend more of our money and tax us into oblivian, then these propositions become useless. Pass them and we get higher taxes. Defeat them and Excremento finds other ways to suck the cash it needs out of whatever anemic tax base remains in KaliforniaSSR to support its habit.

The most disturbing thing that I’ve noticed is that they employ exclusionary tactics against people would call them out on the mistakes they are making. My main point is that even though Del Beccaro doesn’t have an official position in the county party, he is still the defacto chairman, and he rules with an iron fist. Here ya go:

1A is the tax increase tax extension and a meaningless balanced budget drivel. It has no more teeth than the existing balanced budget requirement.

    Vote No.

1B only is relevant if 1A is also passed – hence it is DOA if 1A fails. IF 1A and 1B pass, then the teachers can get billions in cash w/o new taxes being enacted. Well, at least till they kill the rest of the budget anyway.

    Vote No.

1C is the lottery gutting proposition. Not only does it call for selling off future lottery revenues in order to pump cash into the current budget, it tosses out the requirement that the lottery money be used on the schools. In the end, it is actually a bond measure to pay for current daily expenses. As we already know from the bonds Arnold wasted on this effort last year, this will not work.

    Vote no.

1D and 1E – redirects money targeted by propositions into the general fund. Since this does not actualy add new taxes, all it really does is to allow the legislature to use the money where it might be needed more. I am indifferent to the underlying ’causes’ so I do not have a position.

    Your on your own.

1F is a very cynical joke. Since it is currently illegal for the legislature to pass an unbalanced budget, this proposition is meaningless. It seems that the legislative game that calls corrections to inflated projected budgets ‘cuts’, has so confused the legislature that they do not even understand they have a legal requirement to submit ONLY BALANCED BUDGETS!

    Vote no.

Of course, any other ‘goody’ tax increases that may have found their way to your ballot should receive appropriate treatment. On mine, they slapped on an initiative for a brand new parcel tax for the local school district.

Principles which took USA to the top or principles which have never worked anywhere in the world. When the principles are right, the details take care of themselves.

Yes. This has been bugging me since an earlier thread re “moderate principles.” Just what, exactly, ARE “moderate principles”? Conservative principles I know: small gov’t., lower taxes, strong national defense, individual freedoms, personal responsibility, opportunity unlimited. (Note: I only mentioned the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness, not the most important, right to life.)

Liberal principles are a little more fuzzy, perhaps deliberately so: more government control, less personal responsibility, less personal wealth, emphasis on collectivism.

Moderate principles, not sure what that means.

At this point only 53% of Americans prefer Capitolism to Socialism, the Dem’s control the Executive and Congressional branches of giverment, and the Republican party is in absolute shambles because it has no appeal to blacks, hispanics, or young voters. Add to that the control that unions and the media have over things and I would say that the Nation is not swinging to the right any time soon.

Republican’s need to go back to the drawing board and find a platform that resonates with people. It is time to drop the litmus tests on abortion and gay marriage. These are divisive issues that keep people out of the tent. The Republican’s need to convince America that government does not solve problems and there is no socialist utopian government better than a market based economy where the individual has the responsibility and opportunity to succeed.

Another loser of an issue right now is global warming. Regardless of your beliefs on anthropogenic warming, the Republicnas come across like they want to pollute the world. This is the wrong way to come across if you want to attract a generation of voters that is deeply concerned about the enviroment and is spooked by the notion of global warming.

First of all, that poll on capitalism vs socialism is very dubious. If phrased correctly and assuming the polling sample reflects America, I would be shocked if that poll is accurate. Rasmussen routinely polls for liberal/conservative and the results are surprisingly consistent. America is simply not interested in Pelosi/Kennedy/Bush/McCain one-worlder socialism.

As to blacks, Hispanics and other minorities, we are losing them because no one is making the case to them. Here in CA, gay marriage failed because the LATINO AND BLACK voters killed it. Family values are very big within the Latino community and people like Bill Cosby, Juan Williams, Shelby Steele are forever preaching self-determination to the black community and we could be building on THAT.

The reason Reagan succeeded was because he BELIEVED in conservatism and focused on the three main tenets of conservatism in making an articulate case to American voters. His “big tent” was populated by people who came to realize that basic conservatism principles appealed to them. The current GOP is selling out.

This GOP fear of future Latino voters is simply brain dead. Why do we have to abandon American ideals to get their votes? They came to America for a reason and it wasn’t to recreate the third-world life they left in Mexico. Let’s give them a choice and stop abandoning them to the Marxists who populate the channels they are stuck in. LaRaza only speaks for Latinos because both political parties find it expedient, particularly the lazy, elitist Republicans.
