Another Arlen “Human Ipecac” Specter moment

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 5, 2009 12:19 PM

After exploiting the death of Jack Kemp for political self-aggrandizement, is there any lower depth to which Arlen Specter could possibly sink?

Why, yes. Yes, there is. He pimped a “Specter for the Cure” website under the guise of rallying people to help lobby for increased medical research. One wrinkle: “Specter for the Cure” is actually “Specter for His Campaign Coffers.”

Here’s how he plugged the site over the weekend:

“And one of the items that I’m working on, Bob, is funding for medical research. I’ve been the spear carrier to increase medical research. And I’ve even established a Web site, Specterforthecure.com, to try to get people to put more pressure on Congress to join me in getting more funding.

Via the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the truth:

While it appears at first glance to be a fundraising site for a reform movement to help Sen. Arlen Specter fund programs that will seek cures for major diseases, it’s actually a fundraising arm for Specter’s re-election.

A Specter spokeswoman told The Watchdog: “Specterforthecure.com is explicit throughout — including the name itself — that the site raises money for a candidate.

Via David Freddoso:

It does not say anywhere explicitly in the text that your donation goes to re-elect Arlen Specter and not to medical research, but Specter’s spokesman tells me that is the case. You have to go all the way to the bottom of the page to find clues — the donation requirements on the site match FEC requirements in terms of the legal amounts listed and the required information the site collects on donors. It states at the very bottom that the site is “Paid for by Citizens for Arlen Specter.”

A commenter corrected me yesterday with the observation that Specter is not human Ipecac, but the product of human Ipecac.

I stand corrected.

My mom passed away in October after fighting cancer for more than 10 years: breast cancer, kidney cancer, then metastatic renal cancer that came back 4 times! She was a youngster at age 64, with 4 grandchildren who are so young they might not even remember their Granny in another 5 years.

This scumball using Jack Kemp and any other cancer victim as a re-election and fundraising vehicle is despicable.

Cancer does awful things to people and at the same time reveals such strength in humans – the desire for the patient to live, the desire for doctors and nurses to help them recover. The last person to accept that my mom was turning to hospice was her oncologist.

Putting the search for a cure under governmental oversight – you’ve got to be kidding me. That means maybe we’ll have a cure in 100 years if we’re lucky.

When people asked the government to give them overnight mail delivery, they said there was no way it could be done. Then private companies like UPS and FedEx said “of course it can be done.” And they did it. Only then did the government follow suit. If they don’t even believe mail can be delivered overnight, how can we trust them with a cure for cancer?

Maybe I’ve digressed off point here, but this just makes me furious.

Can you say pointless? Or do you just enjoy quoting an entire page for no reason. Oh wait … a lawyer. That explains it.

A commenter corrected me yesterday with the observation that Specter is not human Ipecac, but the product of human Ipecac.

    I stand corrected.

“Specterforthecure.com is explicit throughout — including the name itself — that the site raises money for a candidate.

Does that mean that “Susan G. Komen for the Cure®” is also raising money for a candidate? I thought it was a charity raising money to fight against breast cancer? But Specter says the “name itself” makes it clear that donations are going to a political campaign.

Oh Arlen, you’ve got me all confused. It says “Specterforthecure” not “SpecterfortheSenate”. I know you consider your reelection more important than your principles or party loyalty. But Surely you wouldn’t put your reelection effort above finding a cure for cancer, would you?
