Dear tech execs, you reap what you sow
Yesterday, I noted that Silicon Valley expressed its displeasure with President Obama’s plans to require corporations to pay billions of dollars in U.S. taxes on foreign earnings that they have previously been allowed to defer.
Today, there’s more whining from the tech companies that boosted Obama’s campaign and filled his coffers.
Calll the wahmbulance (hat tip – William Amos):
Carl Guardino usually comes across as an amenable, mild-mannered Silicon Valley executive. But not on Monday. Not when he watched President Obama promising to end overseas tax breaks for U.S. companies that “create a job in Bangalore, India, (rather than) one in Buffalo, N.Y.” Guardino, CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, angrily described Obama’s language as “not only discouraging, but divisive.” The president’s implication that companies such as Cisco Systems and Hewlett-Packard merely “ship jobs overseas,” and are being rewarded in the bargain, came as a shock to Guardino, who otherwise described the president as “brilliant and respected by so many in the tech sector who are counting on the administration as their ally.”
Indeed, Obama’s proposal to limit U.S. companies’ ability to defer paying U.S. taxes on offshore earnings does put Bay Area companies doing a lot of business overseas directly in the crosshairs. “It would adversely impact our ability to invest and grow our business in the (United States) and to compete against our foreign competitors,” said a spokesman for Cisco.
Google, whose CEO, Eric Schmidt, is supposed to be a close buddy of Obama’s, said it is “too early to evaluate the potential effect on Google’s operations, as there will likely be multiple proposals considered.”
…So, doth Guardino et. al. protest too much? Not according to Atulya Sarin, a professor of finance at Santa Clara University. “It’s a bad idea from the word go,” said Sarin, who has consulted with the Internal Revenue Service and with Fortune 100 companies on international tax issues. “Increasing these taxes will reduce after-tax profits, which will reduce incentives. Right now, the administration should be helping Silicon Valley maintain its competitive edge, not making it less so. I hope saner minds will prevail.”
Reap. Sow. Repeat.

And I’m fat! Boy, he sure let me have it! How can anyone argue with such pure intellect?
Zounds… Buff and smart! Who wouldn’t want him or want to be him?
Trick question…
Only 6 more posts…
This has got to be, hands down, the weirdest MM thread e-vah!
5 more posts…
This is the thread that goes on forever….
Okay, when I get up tomorrow I expect to see the last 3 posts!
.
Far be it from me to disprove Godwin’s law.
. = Hitler
So who wants number 400?
Eww…
Ewww…
LET ME….!!!
Oh wow. What did I miss?
OHHHH GREAT. Now we have to post 98 more times to get it back to an even number.
Thanks a lot ZA.
#403
Chap:
Maybe we should just throw out a random insult at R4L? That will get us at least 50 posts.
Errah, can someone start publishing a list of these fools and how much they were taken for??!!! Kinda sounds like they got what they deserved along with the short end of the stick just like old Arlen Sphincter got from Harry “My Lips Are Movin” Reid on committee assignments. I bet Obama campaingns for ole arlen by sending him a VHS tape of old speeches. So much for promises
Dude! I posted Hitler back in comment #398. I thought you weren’t going to post after that?
95 left.
I’m tired of this. Let’s play something else.
John:
Oh? Let it never be said I am beneath carrying on a thread long since it has fulfilled Godwin’s law. I regularly do so as you know *smile*.
Besides, you kind of purposely forced a Hitler remark. It’s not like you made it apply to the discussion at hand. What was the discussion about again?
Zero-
Summary:
Right4life thinks we, John, Jeff, Rags and me are all Poopy-heads (wackos, liars, stalkers, etc.)
And I’m fat.
Oh, and he is buff, genius and we all either want him or want to be him.
And we are all what concealed carry laws are for……
Are you up to date now?
Joy:
I figured as much from what I have skimmed. It’s truly astounding to me at this point that R4L hasn’t been banned yet.
Oh, Chaps! I left you out. I AM sorry.
Chap is also a Poopy-head.
I knew I would miss someone if I typed the names… curses!
Good for you! The first step on the road to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
Actually, you left out the part where he can lift more and gets better looking women, but I’m sure zero gets the gist.
John:
LOL. As Chap pointed out earlier; it is comments like that that really give good insight into R4L’s pathology.
Truly, I am generally against banning anyone no matter how extreme or horrible their views are.
I really only favor banning of abusive spamming, he qualifies.
DUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH~~~ Idiot!! Moron!!
Zero – I agree.
John – Yes, I guess I really need to get serious about losing this 5 lbs of pure blubber that plagues me. If I can shed it, maybe I can be smart and better articulate my views like Right4life. There may be hope for me yet!
You forced me to bring out, The Big guns.
ROFLMAO
80 more Chapoutier…
Amateur !!!
But, cute.
Jeff – DANG! I tried SO hard to make a puppy dog but couldn’t get it to work! ARGH.
Bravo! Bravo!
Bah… lol There is a very skinny dog. Someone needs to feed him!
What I type in the box doesn’t work right in the preview. The box uses fixed width and the preview and post itself isn’t!
I can do a kind of fancy two cat ASCII pic too, but this won’t accept the spaces…
75 more…
Welllllll, you should see my two cat thingy… and you would… if I could get it to work!
Shame, all I feel is shame… I bow to the ASCII artist Jeff!
You win!
Now what?
Hey Right4life –
.
Good sheep !
Only 70 more…
Too much time on my hands, is all…
Try setting it on a different page then, copy and paste. It still distorts some but, not so badly.
Hey! How did you drop the 2161 from your name??
Click on your name above the comment box, change nickname and then save. You have to logout after, then log back in.
Oops…It’s Display name publicly as…
I can’t click on my name…
Wait… Testing…
Testing again…
TESTING!
It ate my 2nd testing post…
Testing again!
It let me change it, but kept eating the posts…
I was trying to show as ‘Joyless’… lol
Wonder why it works for you but not for me. Seems to me Chap was telling folks how to change this once and it wasn’t working for them either. There must be some trick to it.
I think it has something to do with your first or, last name only. I apologize if the info was bad; I rather just use my first name, anyway.
I live in Phoenix, AZ. Where are you living ? Just curious…

58 more…
” There is no Joy, in Mudville; Casey has struck out…”
LOL
I’m from the Phoenix area. Lived near 78th and Thomas until age 4 and then moved to Paradise Valley near the corner of Tatum and Lincoln. Then I moved to Scottsdale and then to Mesa and finally to Apache Junction. After 6 years there I moved to Northern Calif.
Now I live slightly North from a tiny town called Smith River, California. I’m about 3 miles from the Oregon border on the coast.
What area of Phoenix?
I only tried to change nickname… I’ll try to fill in my name and see if that works.
Oh, and I’m almost 50 now. I moved around during college and after, but returned to AZ in 1986 and that’s when I lived in Scottsdale.
Testing… 1,2,3
One more time…
Nope… just eats the posts. Shows me logged in as Joyless, and lets me preview the posts, then just eats them when I submit.
Oh well…
I moved here from Michigan, I was born and raised in the U.P. Moved here, last year since jobs went away. I live on the border of Phoenix, and Tempe 42nd St, off of Southern Ave. I’m sure this place has changed alot since you lived here.
Oh, I’m a 47 widower…At least here, I haven’t had to shovel snow ONCE since I moved here…
LOL
I like S. Mountain Park…I got some nice photos of sunset through the smog.
I road my horse in South Mountain Park once.
I know the area of 42nd and Southern.
I saw Phoenix go from a 2 terminal mini airport the huge complex it is now. I used to hike in ‘remote’ areas that are now in the middle of everywhere. Our house used to be on the outskirts and now the city goes on for, what… 30 miles north? 50? Casa Grande to past Cave Creek, Gold Canyon (east of AJ) to Litchfield Park… Mindboggling.
Nothing more beautiful than an Arizona sunset. When I lived in AJ I always watched the sunset. Every night. I have tons of AZ sunset photos. The mountain (Superstition) would turn amazing colors.
I do miss the desert, and used to be immune to the heat, but one year I had a mild heat stroke and that was it.
I love where I live now. Beautiful Redwoods, lakes, rivers and of course the ocean.
My father has always had a private plane, and even when I was little I can remember literally flying through the smog. At one point you’d just fly right out of it, like coming out of a cloud. Weird.
I hear you…Having lived surrounded by nature, it’s weird here because of the people , does anyone here know how to drive ?
LOL
Nowadays, Mesa only shows up on the news for illegals, and drug busts.
48 more posts…
I would love to see Redwoods; A high school buddy lives in Washington, I’ll have to take a scenic drive up there.
My current project is a 1974 Mercury Montego. It would be great for the drive.
Worthy road trip.
It looks like the others have abandoned us. I guess they don’t like ascii art.
It’s a bit refreshing to get away from politics momentarily and just be goofy.
About changing the nickname.. maybe you filled in all the blanks when you signed up? I’m thinking something about MM’s settings don’t allow a person to change their original info. And all I filled in was my nickname.
Well, I’m going to watch a movie and turn in.
Your probably right, enjoy the movie…
Jeffsemenak@gmail.com
Thanks. I’ll send a mail soon.
I dunno about this thread though…
Don’t want to start making pics with those cuz too many of those can break stuff… and I don’t want MM to have to fix anything.
