Gaffetastic-o video: Obama celebrates “Cinco de Cuatro”

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 5, 2009 08:42 AM

How many times over the last year have we said “If George Bush said what Barack Obama said…”

Here’s the enchanting, eloquent Obama’s latest gaffetastic-o gaffe, fumbling a joke about Cinco de Mayo:

“Welcome to Cinco de Cuatro – Cinco de Mayo at the White House,” said Obama, in what appeared to be an attempt to note they were celebrating on the fourth of May instead of the fifth.

Cinco de cuatro means “five of four” in Spanish.

Fortunately, Ed Morrissey is keeping a running tally with his “Obamateurism of the Day.”

Mary Katharine Ham reminds: “This from a unilingual man who’s embarrassed that more of us can’t speak French. If only he were as conversant in Spanish as he is in noted non-language ‘Austrian,’ this wouldn’t have happened.”

Rather than a misstatement, I believe this was a joke. If it was the 4th, he’s joking that, at the Whitehouse, they’re celebrating ‘Cinco de Quartro.’ Kind of a good joke actually. I don’t like Obama’s spending spree or most of his politics, but I don’t think there’s a gaffe here to be excoriated.

Blow it out your hole!! Does the MSM slobber all over Republican Politicians like they do liberals? Not that anyone in here wants them to, but people in here see the danger of what is going on. You minimize the fact that the media was completely anti-government under the last admin but now happily sings the tune that if you criticize you are anti-government and should be controlled. You cannot or refuse to see that we are entering a totalitarian state of fascist proportions while you are happily being led down the road by completely biased media, hello naziesque. Go back to living under a rock fantasizing about Barak and Michelle being in your shower when it is time to clean up. Sheesh.

President Big Ears said;”Tomorrow we celebrate our shared heritage”.

What shared heritage is this moron talking about, the reconquista movement and illegal immigration?

Big Ears can take his shared heritage with mexico, his cinco de mayo proclamation and put it where the sun doesn’t shine.

This is America, not the banana republic of mexico celebrating the reconquista of the USA southwest.

They don’t even celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Mexico. It is a Cuervo/Dos Equis holiday. Much like Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark/florist/jewelry store holiday. I guess Cocktail Wednesday was moved up a day so they could do shots of Petron.

My daughter was forced in her CA public school days to learn various Mexican folk songs and games and “celebrate” Cinco de Mayo annually.

Guess doing all that prep for celebrating a Mexican holiday that Mexicans don’t even celebrate took away all the time that otherwise would have gone to learning traditional American folk songs and games and celebrating this country’s real holidays…

I see that Obama prepping for this also made it impossible for him to support the annual National Prayer Day in the White House. His explanation? He prays privately – no need to put on a show.

My point is, all things being equal, and if Obama behaved just like Bush, and his term(w. 9/11) followed a republican term. The right would be demanding investigations into Obama’s ties to the Bin Ladin family. They’d be seeking congressional hearings and perhaps impeachment, for Obama allowing 9/11 to happen on his watch.

Since Bush was a republican, he got a “pass” on his actions before and immediately after 9/11, and instead you blame the democrat(Bill Clinton).

Gaffes, incompetence, it’s all about perceptions and who is in office. The left piled on Bush, and the right piles on Obama. I can see through all of the B.S., and you should too. MM is a player so she creates he own B.S. pile, because a liberal is in office. Only the players on the Left made a continuous big deal of Bush’s gaffes.

If Bush said “cinco de quatro, MM wouldn’t have a thread about it. Now that Obama says it, I doubt Huffpo has a thread about it. It’s all a bunch of “my team, your team” nanny, nanny boo-boo crap

    .

I would agree if the bulk of the mainstream media was not in the business of being Democrat boosters/Republican critics. Talk shows/radio are fine: they are supposed to be biased one way or the other, but I should not be able to detect the political bent of a reporter in his/her reporting in regular news.

That is the great inequity that drives the majority of the he said (and it gets played for weeks)/she said (and it is buried, if reported at all, somewhere near the obits.

A free press is necessarily (or should be) an objective press.

Exactly Dim, princesses like undreseige do not get this. I don’t understand how they justify the hypocracy, or not see it (fascism). Conservatives went after Bush for not securing the border, the tarp crap, not fighting back against national security being broadcast to the world by nasty reporters like @ the NYT, and especially did not like McCain…. But lefties hyperventilate when Obama does moronic things and we point it out, like the MSM used to do to Bush. I think the Cinco de Mayo gaffe is BS, but Michelle has a great point, a Republican would never be forgiven for insulting Hispanics, no matter how much they would laugh at it. I’m tired of it. Lefty projection is really getting old.

The MSM and latenight talkshows have always been good natured about busting the chops of both parties when it comes to joke gaffes. Usually, as I said before, the extremes on each side get fanatical about it.

However, a funny thing happened regarding “cinco de quatro”:

“If George Bush said what Barack Obama said…”

Chap linked a Huffpo piece where they made an issue of Obama’s gaffe. Later that night, KeithfreakenOlberman actually make Obama a “worse person in the world” over the botched joke. I guess MM whiffed on the premise of this thread. I see I have no takers on “if Obama, did what Bush did” before and after 9/11. The rightwing would have had his head. The truth hurts, I know.

Well, if “good natured” means virtually ignoring Obama and doing a nightly riff on Bush (see Letterman), than you would be correct. How many times have you seen the “fifth of fourth” story run? How about the old “Great Moments in Presidential Speeches” bit that Letterman did almost every night? Gone but not forgotten.

Again, look at the depth and frequency with which the MSM pounded any misstep of Bush, real or perceived. Compare it to the Obama coverage. You cite two sources that nobody watches or reads, which is equivalent to burying the story sixteen paragraphs in on page B13.

If you want to get into the “wayback” machine, compare and contrast the 2004 election coverage of Bush’s TANG service as compared to Kerry’s Swiftboat service. That was apalling and telling.

Just looking for a little equity here. Or maybe the forgotten mission of objectivity.

All presidents take if from latenight hosts and SNL. You must have forgotten about the Clinton years.

You cite two sources that nobody watches or reads, which is equivalent to burying the story sixteen paragraphs in on page B13.

I cited two sourses that are widely known as being left of left, who actually took Obama to task for the botched joke.

I have no issues with the premise that the MSM leans left on serious issues. But the MSM and SNL and lateshows all evenly tease presidents for harmless gaffes or blunders. Extreme Rightwingers get fantatical about lefty gaffes, “57 states”, “jobs..3letter word”, and ignore righty gaffes. Extreme Leftwingers usually get fanatical about righty gaffes, and ignore lefty gaffes. However, in this case two of the most widely known leftwinger sources, Huffpo and MSNBC’s Olberman actually did mock Obama for the gaffe.

“If George Bush said what Barack Obama said…”

Strangely, in this instance, it would have played out the same way.

Now, what would the talkradio, and rightwing blogosphere reaction be if Obama had 9/11 happen on HIS WATCH, and then subsequently, immediately flew Bin Laden’s family out of the country? In all raw, true, honesty, tell me, what would the reaction be from your side? All other contingencies being equal, but for the players(Obama v. Bush). Would you solely blame a previous republican administration for the pre 9/11 failures? Would Obama get a pass? Threads like this initally get me angry, but I eventually grow bemused because hypocrisy reigns.
