Self-defense story of the day

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 5, 2009 08:59 PM

Not everyone is ready to roll over and be a victim. Thank God:

A group of college students said they are lucky to be alive and they’re thanking the quick-thinking of one of their own. Police said a fellow student shot and killed one of two masked [men] who burst into an apartment.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones met with one of the students to talk about the incident.

“Apparently, his intent was to rape and murder us all,” said student Charles Bailey.

Bailey said he thought it was the end of his life and the lives of the 10 people inside his apartment for a birthday party after two masked men with guns burst in through a patio door.

“They just came in and separated the men from the women and said, ‘Give me your wallets and cell phones,’” said George Williams of the College Park Police Department.

Bailey said the gunmen started counting bullets. “The other guy asked how many (bullets) he had. He said he had enough,” said Bailey.

That’s when one student grabbed a gun out of a backpack and shot at the invader who was watching the men. The gunman ran out of the apartment.

The student then ran to the other room where the women were being held hostage by the second gunmen, who was preparing to rape them. The student fired and the second gunman jumped out a window; he was later found dead.

Ummm…maybe, he lived there ? I believe you can stash a gun in a private residence anywhere that, you can reach it. With the permission of the resident, that is. I can’t imagine the resident’s will protest the use of a firearm in their apartment.

Had he not kissed the asphalt and tried to leave of his own accord, then he could have been kneecapped and allowed to leave in the back of an ambulance.

Had he decided to do neither of the above and become aggressive about it, he could have left in the back of a hearse.

I’ve only had one shooting lesson but I can tell you unless you’re a practised marksman, you can’t just aim to take out a kneecap. If you’re being threatened your best bet is to point the gun in their direction and fire.
That ” go for the good wound” kind of thing is something for the movies and snipers I do believe.

It’s also a crime. The prosecuting attorney will say that you weren’t afraid for your life, you were just out to maim the perp.

Spacey, you guys need to do an experiment. Measure the distance from a logical defence point in your house to where a perp might be when you fire. Take a large sheet of paper to a range or safe location, put it that far away from you and fire. The size of the hole will be much smaller than you imagine. Even with a 12 gauge you’ll need to aim carefully.

    Just sayin’…

    Henry,

You are making some assumptions (as am I admittedly). First, I am a CARD CARRYING MEMBER OF THE NRA! I don’t have a problem with weapons.

You are right. Georgia does not require “registration” of a handgun. In fact Georgia law PROHIBITS registration of handguns by the government!

Was the weapon legal? Go here and see what might apply or not: http://www.georgiapacking.org/law.php.

Did the student have a concealed carry permit? It might apply. It is NOT clear that the student who had the weapon was in his own home. If not, then he carried a concealed weapon into the home and was in violation of concealed carry laws if he did so.

And why were the students “targeted?” It DOES matter. If one or more of them were “gang bangers” and this was a “hit” then what we have here is “gangsta violence.”

My point is we need not rush to “sanctify” this student until we know all the facts. He may be as much of a “bad guy” as the two who invaded the apartment. We don’t know yet. For all we know this student hero could be the next Rafel Edmonds…

I have no problem with the fact that two idiots got what was coming to them. I am sorry that one girl was caught in the middle and hurt. And I am glad that 9 of thee 10 escaped unhurt. But there are a lot of questions about what actually happened and why. If I were a member of the GBI I would be asking those 10 people a lot of questions…

Let’s say two guys break in to The Don’s place, threaten to kill everyone and rape the women. Big Al Fresco reaches into his John Travolta lunch pail, takes the gun, leaves the cannoli, blasts a perp who jumps out the window, runs down the street, and sleeps with the lawn flamingo.

Despite the fact that The Don and Big Al are known gangsters, I’m pretty sure they all acted within their right to defend themselves. And even if Al had his gun concealed, it might be tough to prove he brought in into the house concealed – considering that everyone is grateful to be alive and unlikely to testify to anything else.

This was posted on a blog by someone claiming to be a friend of Calvin Lavant, AKA deceased perp #2.

The cops did it. Never mind the testimony of the other 10 people in the building. Lil Calvin was party-goer #11 and the cops busted in and killed him according to this person. Lil Calvin was just a sweet, inocent victim of ‘Da Man.” Never mind his rap sheet and mug shot…

Oddly enough someone said the same things about Jeffrey Dahmer…

The dead suspect is a very close friend of mine and his death came out of the left field. This is hitting me harder than I ever imagined. I just want to set the record straight and state that CJ would NEVER do anything like this. The news is owned by gatekeepers who only report what they want to (please do some research about the news). To cover up for the Police faults, they want to say that he tried to rob the place. COMPLETELY out of character for him. Also, if he burst through the doors, why aren’t there ANY reports about the force entries, the “mask” that he allegedly wore, and the gun? NOTHING talks about this. The news is doing a good job of brainwashing yall to believe that he was an intruder. When in fact, he was just one of the party goers and was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Every one there is at fault because they could have saved his life. He bled to death on the street and the party goers did absolutely NOTHING (they were probably scared to death of the real gunman), and the police (as usual when in the hood) was late getting there.I REFUSE to believe this garbage about my dear friend.May your soul rest in peace Calvin Lavant Jr. and I will forever love you!

If I get a ‘perp’ on the ground without firing a shot, you can bet he won’t get up until the police arrive and let him up.

If he goes on the ground because I had to fire my weapon, you can bet he won’t get up until a medic or the coroner picks him up.

If I had to shoot him when he was on the ground, it will be because he was bringing his weapon to bear.

It does nothing to aid the cause of those of us who seek to maintain the rights of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves. I hope you’ll reconsider your tone.
