Self-defense story of the day

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 5, 2009 08:59 PM

Not everyone is ready to roll over and be a victim. Thank God:

A group of college students said they are lucky to be alive and they’re thanking the quick-thinking of one of their own. Police said a fellow student shot and killed one of two masked [men] who burst into an apartment.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones met with one of the students to talk about the incident.

“Apparently, his intent was to rape and murder us all,” said student Charles Bailey.

Bailey said he thought it was the end of his life and the lives of the 10 people inside his apartment for a birthday party after two masked men with guns burst in through a patio door.

“They just came in and separated the men from the women and said, ‘Give me your wallets and cell phones,’” said George Williams of the College Park Police Department.

Bailey said the gunmen started counting bullets. “The other guy asked how many (bullets) he had. He said he had enough,” said Bailey.

That’s when one student grabbed a gun out of a backpack and shot at the invader who was watching the men. The gunman ran out of the apartment.

The student then ran to the other room where the women were being held hostage by the second gunmen, who was preparing to rape them. The student fired and the second gunman jumped out a window; he was later found dead.

Unfortunately for the crook, this homeowner is a trainer for the Federal Firearms something-or-other. IOW, he was armed! He “confronted the thief armed, and persuaded him to leave.” Thank goodness!

The police are useless in incidents like this and they’re some of the people who support gun control legislation. There are cops out there afraid of responsible, self-defense minded gun owners. Unfortunately, there are a lot of cops out there who are incompetent at their jobs and think people should leave it to the cops. I disagree.

I live in a high crime area (Hampton Roads, VA) where it looks like places like Norfolk are going to have higher murder rates this year. There are a lot of folks who are mindless zombies in this area, where there’s a mix of rural, suburb, and urban and yet they’d rather be at the mercy of other humans and life in general instead of being proactive and taking life by the horns.

When I hear of examples like this, I’m glad to be an NRA member and a proud gun owner. Women especially need to protect themselves and there are a lot of clueless chicks out there who don’t even think that they could be a victim unless they at least pack some mace (which I do all the time) or think on their feet.

I especially worry about the elderly like my in-laws who have nothing but their wits to defend themselves. In an area near where I live (Norfolk), an elderly couple was beat up by a robber and the elderly man (he was 94) eventually died of his injuries. That incident in particular sticks in my mind.

We live in a world where a lot of people lack basic morals, ethics, and self-discipline. I see teams of kids roaming around with no purpose, no goals, and a lot of anger. What’s particularly troubling is that many of the mugshots I see on television these days are predominantly of young black men who have murdered their own. There never seems to be a reason for any of it.

I especially don’t like what we’re telling our kids in particular. It’s all right to be a victim and that guns are bad but the human intentions behind them should not be questioned. This country has been so caught up in a victim mentality that it’s hard to cut through the cr@p and be able to tell kids what they need to know to not only be responsible citizens but self-reliant ones as well.

Good on these kids. Wish there were more like them.

Paging Attorney General Eric Holder, Eric Holder to College Park Georgia. Report of lawful citizens defending their lives….

Is there any doubt who Eric Holder and his boss would side with in this incident? They have already said that “our American values” NEVER allow for the use of harsh measures against an enemy (especially if used to save lives.) Clearly this student used an instrument of torture against a helpless group of terrorists criminals. Our values simply do not allow this, even if it makes the job of keeping everyone safe “harder”.

Since I wasn’t there, it is easy for me to conclude that the student did not have to resort to torture to make everyone safer. He could have gotten the same results with other means than a gun. Perhaps he could have used a rolled up newspaper, or a rubber band off of one of those party hats. If only he had thought to offer the home invaders a piece of birthday cake, I am absolutely sure it would have softened their hearts. Then everyone would have held hands and sang Cumbyah.

You don’t believe his use of a gun was torture? Then ask yourself this simple question: If you had to choose between being waterboarded for up to 40 seconds or suffering the fate of the would-be-rapist, which would you choose? (Keep in mind, Pres. Obama and Eric Holder have decreed waterboarding to be torture beyond any doubt.)

If you would still choose being waterboarded over being shot to death, then you must have come to the conclusion that being shot and then bleeding to death while running for your life is actually worse than the torture of waterboarding. Anything that is worse than torture must also be torture. Therefore, the man who was shot was tortured by the student with the gun. This makes the gun an instrument of torture that our “values” demand must never again be used in America. And thus all guns must be banned!

See, I can “torture” logic almost as well as the President himself…

-For extra credit, use the logic of the Left to prove that long prison sentences are a form of torture and should be banned. (Hint: compare spending years in prison with undergoing the torture of having to sit naked next to a live caterpillar.)

It is probably the most important right we have when we sit on juries.

Heck, they did not even verify that these gunmen wearing masks were not Islamic militant Jihadis – al Qaeda members of something like them. They are often known to wear masks and carry guns, and abuse women and murder people as well. That means the man who shot at them might be an Islamophobe and, worse, according to Department of Homeland Security and Janet Napolitano, the student is a terrorist and more of a threat to us all than al Qaeda and other Muslim hate filled, blood and death cult activists.

Maybe the student who fired his weapon is a “homophobe.” Did he check to make sure these gunmen who invaded the gathering weren’t just activists for “same-sex marriage?”

I wonder how many years the student who defended himself and the other students will get for possessing a weapon, and how many years he will get for firing the weapon at some poor boys who only wanted to get some money and rape a few women and kill a few human beings.

Maybe the student will get the death penalty.

I took shooting lessons so I would be familiar with the 9mm and the .357 mag (so I would not be scared to use them). Gun classes teach you the proper storage, usage, and availability to the weapon in public and private. It takes away the fear of using, when prompted.

So far, I haven’t had to use my knowledge. But I am a stronger person for knowing….

In a perfect world anyone who used a gun to defend their home from burglers would have a street named in their honor.

As a husband and father, it’s my duty and honor to defend my family. To do so, I need the proper tools. If I don’t equip myself with those tools, then I’m failing in my duty to my family.

Precisely how I feel. I’m armed, know how to use it, and won’t hesitate to pull the trigger in defense of my family. But I’d only fire warning shots: Two warning shots to the center of mass, one warning shot to the head.

And why get a concealed-carry permit? I don’t want my name on a list!

Micheleeroo: The ‘perp’ should have not been allowed to leave, he should have been invited to lie on the ground spread-eagled and kiss the asphalt until the police arrived and then he would have been allowed to leave, in the back of the police cruiser.

Had he not kissed the asphalt and tried to leave of his own accord, then he could have been kneecapped and allowed to leave in the back of an ambulance.

Had he decided to do neither of the above and become aggressive about it, he could have left in the back of a hearse.

Never fire one shot, whether as a warning or with intent to hit. Always fire at least three shots to let them know you mean business.

A single shot tells the ‘perp’you are apprehensive. Three or more shots lets them know you are ‘mad as 4355‘ and are NOT going to let them get away.

However, never empty your weapon as there may be a second or third ‘perp’ who needs some attention as well. Of course, if you fired the three shots at the first one, the others are more than likely GONE!

Great story! I particularly enjoyed the ending…

The student fired and the second gunman jumped out a window; he was later found dead.

I’ll bet you a pound to a pinch of snuff that other similar crimes were committed around the area prior to this…

I’d bet there is more to this story. However, two armed criminals broke into someone’s home and caused the residents fear for their lives. It doesn’t matter what their intent or motive was, and it also doesn’t matter why the other student had a gun. Two criminals got some justice and eleven people walked away relatively unharmed.

Why the criminals went in and why the student had a gun are irrelevant.

Like I said, we don’t know the full story yet…

Your assumption that carrying a weapon = the person is up to no good is small minder, illogical and slanderous to the hundreds of thousands of people who legally carry weapons to defend themselves. People like me, and my wife, and her sister. And apparently several commenters on this blog.

I’m an honorably discharged veteran with a home and a full time job. I donate to charity, participate in my community and keep my lawn neat. My entire criminal record consists of two speeding tickets I got in my 20’s. That’s what kind of person carries a loaded gun.
