Waxman shortcircuits debate to ram eco-taxes through Congress

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 5, 2009 06:59 PM

What do you do when dissenting opinions are dragging down your massive government expansion plans disguised as environmental do-good-ism?

Shortcircuit the debate and skip past all that messy procedural stuff:

Democrats in the House of Representatives said on Tuesday they were still working to pass a climate change bill by year’s end as they scrambled to get enough of their fellow lawmakers to support the initiative.

But in an important procedural move, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman said he would leapfrog a subcommittee and have the controversial legislation voted on by the full committee before his end-of-May deadline for the panel to act.

Citing the approaching self-imposed deadline, Waxman said it “requires that we go right to full committee and bypass the subcommittee.”

Environmentalists who want quick passage of the bill to reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions have noted the measure would have an easier time getting through the full committee, where opposing viewpoints would be diluted by broader support.

Waxman and other Democrats on the committee met with President Barack Obama to discuss the climate change bill. “We are determined to pass a bill by this year,” Waxman said.

But it is proving difficult to craft a law that can attract enough Democratic support and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said there is “not a consensus” on the issue.

Who needs consensus? Leapfrogging powers…activate!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Key lawmakers agreed Tuesday on a follow-up strategy for dealing with the intractable earthquake problem, famous in Rep. Waxman’s home state of California. Using the proven tactics of skipping the nuisance of subcommittees and committees, Waxman is taking his S. 666 bill directly to a floor vote in the full Senate, where the bill should pass easily, at least when Sen. Franken rightfully takes his seat. S. 666, otherwise known as “Stop Continental Drift Now”, will accomplish it’s goal of almost entirely eliminating the annoyance of earthquakes by using periodic small nuclear explosions along prominent faults in the state. First up – the San Andreas fault. Stanford University will get a 24-hour warning to evacuate all of its students for a 3-day period, which should be sufficient to avoid most of the radioactive fallout.”

Boy are we intelligent, just ask us.

Speaking of enviormental plans it appears that enviormentalists are not too happy either:

A key part of President Obama’s energy plan — replacing fossil fuels with green alternatives — is facing increasing opposition from an unlikely source: environmentalists.

Some environmentalists, who have successfully fought a wind farm on the border of Oregon and Washington, are trying to block a massive solar plant in the Mojave desert. And now an Oregon county is considering a ban on wind power in the foothills of the blue mountains.

For decades, environmental groups have talked about “big oil,” painting the petroleum industry as greedy and destructive. Now similar language is being applied to renewables. Instead of eco-friendly green power, increasingly it’s “big wind” and “big solar.”

Well if these eco-taxes are going to be a fact of life, then I hope they expand to coverage to include:

    1. $5 tax on every movie ticket sold
    2. $5 to $20 tax on every concert ticket sold (depending on size of venue)
    3. $5 to $20 tax on every sporting event ticket sold (depend on venue size)

All of these non-essential events attract thousands and thousands, adding to fuel consumption and garbage, so such taxes would be an opportunity for Hollywood and entertainers to put their mmoney where their mouth is.

Well I just heard that the Global Warming/Climate Change debate has finally been settled. It’s all over folks! Let the debates end as we turn our ears to Froggy, the animated frog as he croaks what we will need to pay in eco-taxes to save our earth.

The Tea Party happened within months of Obama taking office. Watch what happens in a year. The middle of the road republicans will be ousted through primaries while the Libs will just be sent packing (Tarred and feathered most likely). Then we can overturn all these bills and take back the country. I think they have more than enough rope at this point to hang themselves. Almost all the damage they do can be fixed. Not easily, but fixed. This is the pain we have to go through to wake up the masses. Even some of the Democrat citizens are getting fed up with their Fed Representatives. The Republicans are on a “Listening Tour”….well listen up! Get truly conservative or you are toast! The middle of the road is where you get run over.

What? No consensus? But all the experts, including Al Gore, say there is a consensus. If “the debate is over”, that means we know all there is to know about climate change and thus we must also know exactly what to do about it. How could there not be consensus among Democrats on this issue?

Maybe they’re just confused like me. I’m not as smart as Al Gore, but it seems to me that if you change your term from “global warming” to “climate change” it means there really isn’t a concensus. It means you’re not really sure whether it’s going to warm or cool. You just know the climate’s going to “change.” But we kind of need to know which one is going to happen before we can take steps to prevent it. Don’t we?

Key said HCR 1028, which, if passed, would be sent to Democratic President Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress, would not jeopardize federal funds but would tell Congress to “get back into their proper constitutional role.” The resolution states the federal government should “cease and desist” mandates that are beyond the scope of its powers.

Key said many federal laws violate the 10th Amendment, which says powers not delegated to the U.S. government “are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.” The Constitution lists about 20 duties required of the U.S.

There are actually 2 distinct items here.

The ‘cap’ component is the actual tax side of this legislature and will stifle US manufacturing. It will also be used as a means to prohibit new US competition to those existing businesses that are ‘buying’ their ‘cap space’.

The ‘trade’ component is the more manipulative part that is designed to send money to ‘special’ individuals. This part will provide billions to corrupt politically connected companies and will be managed in a fraudulent manner from day one. From the outset, there is a major question as to what even substantiates a ‘tradeable’ unit. As well as who decides what the ultimate supply of the tradeable resources can be. Most fascinating are the people that want to pretend that plants like trees somehow are relevant. While plants do store carbon, they do not store it forever, they just rent it until they die and rot or burn! Unless they are buried for many millions of years under large rocks.

Look for the congressional supporters that vote the trade component in to ALL PROFIT, in major ways, from it!
