Recessionista: The cost of MichelleO’s commencement appearance

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 18, 2009 01:01 PM

I noted over the weekend that charity-stingy First Lady told the grads at UC Merced to “give back.”

Via Vanessa Richardson at WalletPop , the Merced Sun-Star reported on the price tag for Michelle O’s lecture:

The Merced Sun-Star reports the school’s commencement budget has ballooned from $100,000 to $700,000 to accommodate Obama on campus. It’s not because Michelle has requested five-star digs for her Secret Service agents. Rather it’s because UC Merced officials want to make a big splash.

According to spokesperson Tonya Luiz, “We have her first public address. It’s our obligation to make Merced look good.” The top cost is an estimated $300,000 for an audio/visual firm to broadcast the event on-site and provide a live feed for media outlets. It’s doubtful they would be shelling out that kind of dough if the unpopular Governator was giving the address.

Campus planners were hitting up major companies to be sponsors, but the recession and fiscal year-end means lots of empty pockets. The Sun-Star says university officials may approach the UC Office of the President to see if it’s willing to help foot the bill, although since the school system is proposing yet another hike in student fees, that may not be such a good idea.

The city of Merced, meanwhile, is prepared to tap the Downtown Improvement District, a fund of special taxes downtown shops pay on their business license, if the event goes over budget, but no general fund money will go toward the post-graduation “Cap & Town” festival in downtown streets.

That’s good, because Merced is now infamous for being Ground Zero of the housing boom and bust and its unemployment rate is one of the highest in California.

Is now a good time to increase your budget by 700% to party for a day? While I’m glad Michelle picked Merced for a commencement speech, I wonder how much attention the town will get after she leaves — and how it will help the local economy.

Holy cow!! That is unbelievable that in the midst of their budget crisis there in the “Golden” state, they would blow such an astronomical sum of money for this woman to come speak. But, seeing how the state is bankrupt, I guess they’ll just never pay their bill.

What better way to honor Michelle Obama than to emulate her husband Barack by monsterously overspending to the absurd degree on her visit. Now, she is gone. And everyone can close their eyes and dream of the magnificence of her presence. Then, they can open their eyes and see the bills. Congratulations Merced! Outstanding work!

The Golden Junk-Bond State is doomed….

The tax differential between low-tax and high-tax states is widening, meaning that a relocation from high-tax California or Ohio, to no-income tax Texas or Tennessee, is all the more financially profitable both in terms of lower tax bills and more job opportunities.

Updating some research from Richard Vedder of Ohio University, we found that from 1998 to 2007, more than 1,100 people every day including Sundays and holidays moved from the nine highest income-tax states such as California, New Jersey, New York and Ohio and relocated mostly to the nine tax-haven states with no income tax, including Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire and Texas. We also found that over these same years the no-income tax states created 89% more jobs and had 32% faster personal income growth than their high-tax counterparts.

Did the greater prosperity in low-tax states happen by chance? Is it coincidence that the two highest tax-rate states in the nation, California and New York, have the biggest fiscal holes to repair? No. Dozens of academic studies — old and new — have found clear and irrefutable statistical evidence that high state and local taxes repel jobs and businesses.

What a perfect parable for why Merced is ground-zero for the recession/depression….

    Shellie Obama’s debt encrusted appearance.

Two words for the morons who spent the $700,000.00 – Fiscal Responsibility. They’ll probably need to look them up and have someone explain how they go together because they apparently don’t teach that at UC-Merced. I wonder how long it will be before the extravaganza they threw will be reflected in tuition and fees increases for the students who have not yet graduated?

Hope is not a plan; not all change is good. WE are the civilian national security force. If Chicago was treated like Iraq, the Democrats would be demanding we withdraw all our forces, even though they control Chicago. The resistance is here; the resistance is now. RESIST!!!!!!!!!

UC Merced is smaller than my daughter’s high school. They staged a multi-month campaign to land her as the speaker according to the gushing seniors involved in getting Michelle there. Maybe the cost should come from the student activity fees for as long as necessary to pay for the “event of a lifetime”. You know, in line with Michelle’s husbands mantra about taking personal responsibility…(or is that really just a joke?)

The sheer stupidity of this is beyond me. UC Merced spent $300K to provide a LIVE FEED of this permanently-obtuse entitled woman’s “speech”? Didn’t they realize that MSNBC, NBC, CBS, hell, PBS probably too, would ALL provide “live feeds” if asked, and pay for the “honor”? The owner of the overpaid video company is probably related to the college president or someone at the college, sort of inter-familial “stimulus” as it were. Spread the wealth around, folks. I was in the Dallas/Metro when all the refugees from Katrina came in. One of the jokes from conservatives in LA though was that since TX was taking such good care of them let them stay, please. They claimed that the ones returning were conservatives with jobs and professions and the ones still hanging out in other states always voted liberal. Interesting.

Back to MO..was I the only one that noticed she sat up there with her legs apart? Classy. Her mama should have spent some time teaching her how a lady should sit, especially on an elevated podium.

When I graduated, I cannot remember any speaker using the mantra we should, nor had to, give back. We were told we had to hit the ground running because we were bright, had used our parents resources to persue higher learning, and the country needed us to produce to the best of our abilities. We were the future leaders and workers of this great country. Anyone suggesting we ignore the obligation to live up to our greatest potential would have been laughed off stage. I feel sorry for any young graduate, with oceans of student loans to pay back, that buys into this self-servitude to the state.

Seems our magnificent duo in D.C. want the young graduates to volunteer, live below the poverty level yet feel good about themselves. Hate to burst the bubble, but this generation wants/likes ’stuff’ too and will no doubt decide to earn it just like we did. The industrial revolution of this century will come from these young people. They’ve never been poor and won’t like it any better than any past generation.

    From Wiki:

As the San Joaquin Valley was the state’s largest and most populous region without a UC campus, on May 19, 1988 the Regents of the University of California voted to begin planning for a campus in the region, in response to increasing enrollment and growth constraints at existing UC campuses.[5] On May 19, 1995, the Regents selected the Merced site, mid-way between Fresno and Modesto — each of which has a campus of the California State University system — as the location for the University of California’s tenth campus.[6] The campus groundbreaking ceremony was held October 25, 2002, and the first day of class was September 6, 2005.
