California: The poster child for dysfunction

Arnold Schwarzenegger was so preoccupied with lecturing the national GOP about the need to “rebrand” itself and move left that he forgot to mind California’s own business.

Today, his desperate tax-and-spend ballot measures are expected to all go down in flames at the polls. Tea Party activists of all political stripes have lambasted the deceptive initiatives. The intellectually and financially bankrupt state GOP is in full meltdown, having poured $650,000 into Schwarzenegger’s coffers to promote the phony spending cap measure before the state party waffled, then turned around and voted to oppose it and the other tax hikes.

So, where in the world is the Taxinator now? After making a last-ditch pitch for his $16 billion in tax increases at black churches in L.A. (hello, church/state separation activists?) and attempting to fear-monger voters into approving the measures, Arnie has fled to Washington, D.C. today for a pow-wow with Barack Obama to celebrate — what else? — new eco-regulations on cars that will result in massive new costs imposed on drivers:

Battling anger and indifference on the part of California voters, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger implored them Sunday not to make the state “the poster child for dysfunction” by defeating a host of measures on Tuesday’s ballot that seek to restructure the state’s bleak finances.

After years of binge spending, open-borders welfare expansionism, environmental extremism, unchecked unionism (read: SEIU) and hostility to businesses, it’s a little late to try to prevent California from becoming “the poster child for dysfunction,” isn’t it?

You can run, but you can’t hide:

When the going gets tough, the tough get going and that’s what Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing tonight: going out of town.

Although the governor has been arguing for months that Tuesday’s election features a package of ballot measures that are absolutely essential to California’s financial future, Schwarzenegger is leaving on a jet plane for Washington, where he’ll spend election day. And he’s not coming home in any hurry, either.

The governor will be in DC for what his staff is billing as a major announcement: California is expected to get its long-sought waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency, which will allow the state to set higher standards for car and truck exhaust emissions.

And Schwarzenegger plans to stay in Washington Wednesday to lobby the California congressional delegation for more budget help for the state.

Important stuff. The tougher emissions standards are something Schwarzenegger has been working on for years and is an important past of his plan for the greening of California. And since California is looking at a $15.4 billion budget deficit under the best — and currently unlikely — circumstances, a chance to smooze the DC-based pols isn’t a bad thing.

Still, would Schwarzenegger be making this trip if every poll wasn’t predicting an election night disaster for the governor’s budget reform package? Things are so ugly that Budget Reform Now, Schwarzenegger’s umbrella group for support of the ballot measures, hadn’t decided by this afternoon when, where or even if they were going to have an election night party.

It will be thanks in large part to both the old guard taxpayers’ rights groups (Howard Jarvis) and the new generation of anti-Evil&Stupid Party activists from the Tea Party movement that Schwarzenegger’s ill-conceived measures go down. But the fight is far from over.

The Taxinator is in D.C. with his hands out — and his figurative gun to the head of the rest of the country’s taxpayers. As I noted last week, California wants TARP money. They’ll argue, as every other successful bailout recipient has, that the state is Too Big Too Fail.

California did itself in. It deserves to suffer the consequences.

Tell your congressional representatives to tell the muscle man looking to pump up his puny state coffers with everyone else’s money:

Not one dime.

Karl at Hot Air: “[M]any Americans will chafe just as much at the prospect of paying to bail out California’s decades of inept govenment as they do at paying to bail out GM’s decades of inept management. Obama would bail out California to hold onto those electoral votes, but he will have to worry about how many he loses in the process.”

1F is just a salve to make Californians feel as if they’re doing something. It’s inconceivable to me that it will have any measurable affect on our legislators balancing future budgets. For one thing, these folks only get paid about $100k/yr. While that’s substantially more than I make, it’s also still solidly a middle-class income in CA, making it hard for me to believe these folks are in it for the money in the first place. They could certainly make more in the private sector if they were concerned with income. With that as a given, I fail to see how preventing them from a few percent raise when there’s a deficit will change their votes one way or the other. It’s definitely not going to make liberals of the sort we have in Cali vote against their fundamental positions (larger govt, larger entitlement programs, etc. etc.).

You point on conservatives is true. But the only reason the freaks run this place is because the GOP sold out.

Unless something drastic happened in the past year or so, there are more Republicans per capita here than virtually any other state. And polls consistently show that we are every bit as conservative as conservatives in TX.

The problem is that the state GOP party (thank you David Dreier) signed off
on the most outrageous gerrymandering scheme ever concocted to ensure that incumbents cannot be voted out. Last election, not a single elected office in CA changed party.

We then voted for term limits which made things even more corrupt because now, politicians can vote for ANYTHING knowing that they won’t be around to face the consequences. They then accept cushy jobs from whoever bought them off.

Those who mock CA as a loony anomaly are misinformed. What is happening in CA is happening everywhere even if you don’t think so. I come from MA initially and things were/are even worse there. States, just like citizens and America itself, are rapidly losing their constitutional rights.

Partisan politics are completely irrelevant in a corrupt one-party system at war with its citizens. We need to stand where we are and fight.

California’s demographics are such that the majority of the State’s population is concentrated in the urban areas of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Once you escape the urban environment, the rest of the State is generally conservative (such as the Central Valley, where I currently live).

I turned in my absentee ballot yesterday, and voted NO across the board. I liken the California Legislature to an alcoholic, and this vote is akin to snatching the booze from them, which has to be done to them for their own good.

Against my better judgement, I voted for Ahnold in the original recall election (instead of McClintock), but I learned my lesson from that and did not vote for him again when he ran for reelection. Schwarzenegger has certainly been a colossal disappointment.

Your state is too freaking hot in the summer. I *like* that when I buy my eggs, I can get them from the store to my fridge BEFORE they end up cooked in the shell.

If you are coming from Kalifornia, you will need to be de-briefed and exorcised first….
Well, when I can get out of KaliforniaSSR, I won’t need de-briefing or exorcism. My famliy having moved from Iowa and I living in this state for over 50 years and witnessed its spiraling decline in the last 25, I’ve never considered myself a Califorian, more like an Iowan in exile. I WILL need a good hot decontamination shower, however. Maybe burn my clothes, and after getting a driver’s licence from my adopted state, burn my CAL DL too!

Where are you thinking of going? The LibTards ™ are infiltrating EVERYWHERE. Colorado looked good – then, last election – BAM! – voted for Obamessiah and went BLUE. Texas, er, has the same weather patterns as AZ in the summer. ID, ND, SD, MT and WY have White Supremists/Neo-Nazis – although WY DOES have Dick Cheney, we Like him and MT does have less than 1M people in the WHOLE state and DID pass that law telling O and Holder to stick their gun laws up their noses. AK looks good – as does the Lovely Gov.P, but again with the weather patterns and Daylight issues.

On the other hand, weather in PSRK is good, but is it worth the HUGE chunk o’change that GAS is going to require?

Oh, and obviously, if we are leaving Peoples’ Republik of Kalifornia, it’s because we have been debriefed…and de-shirted, and de-pantsed, and de-walleted….but can we please keep our tin-foil hats for a while? Just until the government loses track of us and can’t hone in via the GPS in the mercury fillings in our teeth. Or our teeth rot out because the dentists have been sent to the LibTard Camps ™ for programming on insertion of said GPS transmitters…

    Inquiring minds and alla that….

    :-)

OT – Are we sure that Obamessiah is not a Hybrid Alien ™, you know, like between the Greys and Reptilians? Just check out his eyes and affect (or lack there-of) next time he’s on TV. Maybe THAT’S why he doesn’t release his birth certificate. You don’t get one of those from the on-board incubators, I hear…

Every big liberal run state in the country is about to go down the same tube. California might be better for that, BUT, heaven forbid that the state should actually cut funding for social services for illegals – $13 billion worth.
