Back to Gitmo: Senate votes down closure funding, 90-6; judge rules indefinite detention can continue

First, this just in: A federal judge rules that the US can continue indefinite detention of enemy combatants
And also just in: The Senate amendment scrapping funding for Obama’s Gitmo closure has just been passed by 90-6.
Victor Davis Hanson sums up Obama’s sound and fury on Gitmo:
With the Democratic no-go on Guantánamo (I’ll leave it to the better informed to ascertain the degree that the Democratic Congress came to the rescue of an embarrassed Obama administration and cut off funding for the shutdown to allow him an out with the now familiar excuse of “they did it — not me, who keeps promises”), I think we now have come to the end to the five-year left-wing attack theme of Bush “shredding the Constitution.”
Except for the introduction of euphemisms and a few new ballyhooed but largely meaningless protocols, there is no longer a Bush-did-it argument. The Patriot Act, wiretaps, e-mail intercepts, military tribunals, Predator drone attacks, Iraq, Afghanistan — and now Guantánamo — are officially no longer part of the demonic Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld nexus, but apparently collective legitimate anti-terrorism measures designed to thwart killers, and by agreement, after years of observance, of great utility in keeping us safe the last eight years…It short, all the fury, the vicious slander, the self-righteous outbursts, the impassioned speeches from the floor, the “I accuse” op-eds by the usual moralistic pundits — all that turned out to be solely about politics, nothing more.
Byron York credits Mitch McConnell for the GOP victory on Gitmo.
I credit legal thinkers like Andy McCarthy and indefatigable national security watchdogs like Debra Burlingame who refused to capitulate to civil rights absolutism and CAIR/ACLU-driven hysteria. Thank you for your unceasing courage and vigilance.
For now, the adults have prevailed.

Bush was right. I just had to say that.
Let’s just see if the left’s talking points change any.
For once I actually look forward to hearing LGM’s comments on this.
Sure they will. The next step will be to describe the “change” at GITMO since Obama took over. There is no more torture going on like it was under Bush and the inimates are happier now and have asked to be able to stay in this tropical paradise under Obama.
The famous yet unnamed all-powerful “Federal Judge” declared Gitmo operative? I thought the all-knowing “Federal Judge” always ruled FOR the Democrats. How a “Federal Judge” can overcome law is beyond me, but they’ve been doing it for years. For ONCE “he” got it right. Took “him” long enough.
Hypocrisy, thy name is Leftist….
Hanson says it all so well…
It short, all the fury, the vicious slander, the self-righteous outbursts, the impassioned speeches from the floor, the “I accuse” op-eds by the usual moralistic pundits — all that turned out to be solely about politics, nothing more.
Bush/Cheney are vindicated
The Anti-American Lying Left is exposed
The country is so blessed to have Dick Cheney.
Just had to say that too!
LOL!
Rot in jail you Jihadist animals! Allah can’t help you there!
Woe to the hippies and peace-niks, it appears even their much-loved leaders recognize that bad guys need to be dealt with in a way that doesn’t involve flowers and hugs!
Obama could always “reach out” and let the Gitmo detainees move in with him and his wife and kids and mother-in-law. He lives in a big house with guards, so what’s not to like? Not only would he get to close Gitmo, he would be saving taxpayers money by NOT building a new prison. Works for me.
so…. Bush lied, Obama complied? So now all is well?
Or, he could send them to Kenya, I hear his brother has a neat little shack and lives alone.
Wait a minute!!
Can’t bankrupt California or Michigan take in the Gitmo prisoners and receive a hefty federal subsidy?
(apologies to my friends from Ca. or Mi.)
We’re already supporting enough illegal alien criminals in this state. Why do you think we’re bankrupt to begin with?
Deport all the illegals and we’ll be in the black in no time.
Sorry, Blame.
I thought the sarc was obvious.
Mea Culpa Eternae
Wow 90-6? Michelle, who were the 6 who voted against it and who failed to vote? I’m curious….
The sad part is the sheeple on the left still won’t see the political deception that’s been played on them.

Me too. He is a Jew who is a big supporter of releasing terrorists into our country. With a mind like his, I have no doubts why he is such an idiot.
On topic:
WOW!!! This is like when the dems had Clinton as POTUS and were screaming we should be listening in and when Bush was POTUS he was listening in on all of the liberals in the country.
90-6? Sounds like 44 democrats were blowing smoke up their supporters a$$e$!
Liberalism should hurt.
I was just out cruising and saw 17 libtards heads explode, it was awesome. lmao.
self correction
Looks like 41 dems not 44. Same result.
All of them were screaming to close GITMO. All of them supported Obingo’s Exec Order to close GITMO. Dare I say all of them prefered Bush in GITMO rather than our enemy?
Please tell me one of them was LGM. At least it would explain his silence on this thread.
Regarding indefinite detention, I find it funny that liberals are always saying we should consider international law in judicial decisions…except that they ignore that part of international law/law of war that allows detention of hostiles for the duration of hostilities.
heh! I just waded into the muck over at DailyKos and DU. Talk about hissy fits!! “Even the Dems won’t support Obama (our blessed leader).” (I added the “blessed leader” part… It’s absolutely hysterical to watch their heads spin around. They are calling all the Dhims “Rethuglican lite.” LOL!!!
Great point! As Soap said, “Liberalism should hurt.”
He’ll just pay for it out of TARP or porkulus funds.
I think I will celebrate by going out and buying one of those orange suits and wishing I had something to waterboard.
Thanks Sergeant Tim,
Wow figured Reed would be on there.

Kennedy I understand, but where the heck was Byrd and Rockefeller You’d have thought at least one would have voted.?
This actually gives Obama coverage on not fulfilling one of his main campaign promises. He had already tried to back away from it, but now he can say that he tried, but blame it on congress that it didn’t get done.
Where’re the TV networks? They should come up with a reality show where each week the 2 contestants that fall below the yellow line get an Enhanced Interrogation Technique. The first one to crack gets eliminated. Save waterboarding for the finale. Brilliant!
OMG. Someone PLEASE photoshop the cover of the movie “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” for this! Priceless!
In your face B.Hussein Obama! In your face!
Via ABCNEWS.COM:
Hmm…It seems the liberal news media has caught a bit of rabies by this senate move and has started attacking it’s own…
“Not in my back yard” takes on new meaning.
Byrd is still ill or in the hospital. Rockefeller was probably stuck in planning sessions to change the names of the highways in WV.

I agree Obama is relieved. His FIRST move as President was announcing the closure of G-bay. The next day, he realized the stupidity of his choice. He had been duped by all the rhetoric and had NEVER thought it all through. Just a knee jerk reaction by a jerk. But his chin will still be higher than his ears.
Talk about a bailout.
Duh…sorry, too much G&T
I totally misunderstood.
Possible, I suppose…academically…
Just difficult to actually conceive…
Many of us here in KY are especially proud of you today, Senator McConnell!
Thank you for your efforts to do what’s right on Gitmo (even with the Herald-Leader biting you at the heels), and keep up the good work!
Actually, that rate is pretty good, compared to recidivists coming out of American prisons depending on their crime.
Still…

No, I am NOT drunk. I was just out in the hot, hot sun working in the garden.
Really.
Oh, I’m enjoying this! Just look at the steam coming out of the donkey’s ears!
