Billionaire to New York: Screw you

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 20, 2009 11:23 AM

Billionaire Tom Golisano, founder of Paychex, is leaving high-taxing, entrepreneur-undermining New York for Florida. He penned a kiss-off in the NYPost today:

Politicians like to talk about incentives — for businesses to relocate, for example, or to get folks to buy local. After reviewing the new budget, I have identified the most compelling incentive of all: a major tax break immedi ately available to all New Yorkers. To be eligible, you need do only one thing: move out of New York state.

Last week I spent 90 minutes doing a couple of simple things — registering to vote, changing my driver’s license, filling out a domicile certificate and signing a homestead certificate — in Florida. Combined with spending 184 days a year outside New York, these simple procedures will save me over $5 million in New York taxes annually.

By moving to Florida, I can spend that $5 million on worthy causes, like better hospitals, improving education or the Clinton Global Initiative. Or maybe I’ll continue to invest it in fighting the status quo in Albany. One thing’s certain: That money won’t continue to fund Albany’s bloated bureaucracy, corrupt politicians and regular special-interest handouts.

How did the state get to this point? By spending, spending and spending some more.

Going, going, going Galt. Who’s next?

But nooooo, he has to “go Galt’ and selfishly keep the money he earns! What an ingrate! Doesn’t he know the government made it all possible for him to have money to begin with? I mean, it really is the government’s money anyway. They just let him use some of it.

I say the government should just tax that ingrate at 100%! He has enough already!!!

Good for this man! Rush said the other day he is getting rid of his home in NY because of the taxes. It’s not just about the money, it is the state thinks the ‘rich’ and businesses should fund all the give aways in their state. Well, people are getting tired of it and low tax states like TX, FL, NV, etc. will just reap the rewards of these people and businesses moving. Too bad bho and team can not get it either.

Actually, some states did just that. I recall a story of a retired police officer moving from to another state because of the lower cost of living.

Afterward, the state of California sent him a tax bill for his retirement income with the justification that he earned the retirement income in California and the state expected him to pay income taxes on it once he started using it regardless of the fact he now a citizen in another state. Of course his new state expected him to pay tax on his retirement income as well.

This practice, I believe, was put to an end because of a court decision. I’m sure some states would love to bring the practice back to life.

I just hope he doesn’t move any of the businesses and/or jobs he keeps in NY State. Rochester and Buffalo, in particular, don’t need any more destruction.

OTOH, I don’t blame him if he does. The press don’t ever mention just how high the NY State taxes are.

You can’t buy a pair of socks for your baby’s feet in Buffalo without paying almost 10% in sales tax. Oh, you’ll all see the lies about how the STATE sales tax is only 5% (or around there) but every county in NY adds another 4 or 5% to that. It’s insane.

Property taxes on a house in Buffalo are the same as on the same house in NJ or Connecticut, just 35 miles out of NYC. The house itself, however, is only worth 1/2 as much – so the effective tax rate is doubled.

And if you think it’s bad in Buffalo or Rochester, you really need to see the poverty of Niagara Falls, Utica, Elmira – or the huge swaths of poverty between them.

NY State is teetering on death. Decades of high taxes have pushed people like Golisano – a local boy, who has really invested in his home town – out… and torn the heart out of the economy.

California isn’t the only state that’s about to show us just what the long term effects of socialism are. NY State is a dead man walking.

We have some great restaurants here: Brazilian, Italian, Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, to name a few. I’ve lived here for 25 years and have seen many changes in that time. We used to laugh that the tumbleweeds blew down 17th Street in Ft. Lauderdale, during the summer, but now that same highway is busy all year long.

The only flaws with that arguement are:

    1. A lot of people are moving to LA now, sort of like the NY of the west coast. (For the reasons people used to want to go to NY: opportunities for success.)

    2. Once the concentration of productive enterprises to work for drops in NY, the smart people will go to where the jobs and money are. And that may not be NY. (Time will tell)

Some states (like NY for example) already do that to military members who entered the military via the state, but are stationed in another state. That is why so many in the military change their legal residence to another state as soon as they possibly can (which is usually after they have been fleeced by their original state while in basic training).

A SMART person will eventually realize there’s no point to working when the government is going to give a sizable portion of what you work to earn to people who neither work nor earn it.

Good luck with that! Isn’t THAT what we want immigrants to this country do? THAT they do it our way? Oh no, the immigrants, some legal, most illegal, want to transform the United States to their way of doing things. They do not even want to learn English.

Even those born here, who for some reason identify themselves as to their “ethnicity” rather than nationality, do not want to conform with the norms of the place they chose to reside in. E.g.: Dark people insist to be called African-Americans, make up some silly African holidays to celebrate and impose on others. Most Muslims practice Sharia law. They defy our rules, form enclaves where they are left on their own, impenetrable by “outsiders.” Sharia law is on its way to full implementation, what with the “tolerant” Left not wanting to hurt feelings of people who are “different” from us. Formerly clean and

Supposedly those who migrated here are escaping the crap in their previous place of abode. Yet they want to impose what they escaped to the rest of us already here.

    Sigh!

    Excellent comment. Well done.

    Our own private East Germany…

Two groups can take money from you by force:
    1) Criminals
    2) The government

The more money that is taken from you, the less freedom you have.

When the government takes 0%, you have total freedom, but you also have total anarchy because there is no government.

When the government takes 100%, you have no freedom at all… you are a slave of the state.

Government is always (less efficient / more wasteful) than free market enterprises in meeting human needs.

The greater the percentage of income that the government takes, the greater the poverty. That is universally true. Look at any part of the world where a geography was split into one part capitalist and one part socialist/communist.

Look at West vs. East Germany.
Look at South vs. North Korea.
Look at Hong Kong vs. the rest of China.

Socialism sounds altruistic at first, but it invariably leads to greater poverty.

Probably not. Rush pays about $20000 per day for the time he spends in NY. The huge amounts of documentation they demand to verify his absence(!) from the state would take far more manhours than that just to work their way through. As he said, it’s just harassment.

You see, in good sarcasm one always finds a grain of truth. I wasn’t thinking that, but you’re absolutely right. It even goes to awarding benefits and accounting for 401(k) contributions, all of which are made more difficult due to government tax actions.

The New Teacher Project, which estimates that the city has been paying $81 million over two years in salaries and benefits for teachers who have not been able to find permanent jobs.

Under the new free-market system, teachers who lose their jobs because of budget cuts, program curtailments or school closings are supposed to go into a reserve pool for a short time before they are hired elsewhere in the system. An overwhelming majority of more than 2,700 teachers sent into the pool in 2006 did just that.
